I have had real good luck with CL. Yes, I do my homework and always meet in a public place. I have probably bought 20 knives from CL, Sebenzas, Microtechs, Benchmades, Emersons, Spydercos, Tops, Falkniven. I have seen some fake stuff too, but most post it as a clone. I think your comment on it reflecting the local economy is right on.

Intelligence, intuition & common sense, are great attributes to have, when dealing with people on the internet, regardless of whether it's Craigslist, Bladeforums- you name it.
San Diego, is a great place to find some incredible deals on CL. I've purchased dozen's of top quality older model tools here: Hitachi, Porter Cable, Milwaukee, Makita, Rousseau, Fein, Two Cherries etc.etc.etc.. Quality tool's that are no longer being manufactured in Koki, Japan, the USA, & are now being manufactured in, China.
I actually responded an ad for a 12" compound miter saw/thickness planer/PC router/Rockler router table/router bits/Husqvarna chainsaws...drove down to a beautiful home in La Jolla. It turned out to be a major score! I completely filled my entire truck with mint tools worth over 5k, & paid $400. The guy just wanted them gone. I sold some a few of these tool, made around $2500 & kept the rest. I also scored a couple of deals on Santa Cruz Mountain bikes for $450 & $400, that were $2k bikes. A beautiful mint condition 1984 Toyota Supra for with only 100K for $2000. Surfboards, wetsuits, & kayaks are also a great place to find awesome deals.
As far as knives: only 3. I found an authentic Spyderco Spyderfly in excellent condition, from some lady in Oceanside, for $60.
YMMV, however if you do your homework, & are cautious, Craigslist can be a great place to find fantastic deals.
Edit: I'm extremely cautious with whom I sell to, & FWIW, those transaction rarely take place at my residence.
Double Edit: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! May 2016 bring you the grail knife of your dreams!
