Anybody EDC a beater

So I started thinking about this the other day, when I went down to my car from my apartment to cut a piece of skateboard grip tape off that I wanted to use on my flashlight for more traction.

When I got down there, I realized all I had was my EDC's.. a BM minigrip that I really didn't want to use on the rough material, and a Demko rebladed Recon 1.. so I sat there thinking about my options for a while, and finally went upstairs and got my Sanrenmu 710 to cut it (which of course, destroyed the edge). I started thinking about it and I am thinking of getting a dedicated EDC beater, that I can loan out, and do whatever with.

I was thinking maybe a cheapo S&W or one of the cheaper kershaws (storm or something) or a byrd..

anybody else carry a dedicated knife just in case you have a job that will trash the blade? If so, what do you carry?

Yea-the blade on my folding pliers, they get screwed up I just fix them without any worry.

Yeah, I'm guilty of babying some of my "nice" knives. If I know I'm going to be cutting up something nasty I'll grab my CRKT M-16. It's proven to be a great beater!

I use the blade on my leatherman skeletool for stuff I wouldn't use a strider or spyderco on because I never use that blade for anything else.

I should note I don't baby my knives things like tape, plastic of various kinds, and other things get cut with my carry knife and I just wash it after and if needed sharpen it but the folding plier blade gets used for the stuff that could be considered "suicide" for a cutting tool i.e. wire, cutting up muddy whatever et cetera.

no, absolutely not...i don't buy a quality knife just for show or to clean my nails...i use it...it dulls, i sharpen it, i use it and so on a so forth...and when it's time to buy another of the same i buy.

i got a kershaw composite shallot and tyrade that are edc'd and used heavily; and fyi, they are still looking pretty clean for all the work they are tasked to do...

I use a Spec Bump for everything. When I mess it up I try to fix the problem. If it's beyond my ability to fix I send it to Kershaw and they fix it. In the 2-3 weeks I wait for the knife to be returned I'll use a Gayle Bradley. If I mess up the Spyderco I'll send it back to fix and the cycle continues.

i carry a sak for the dirty stuff, or to loan to co-workers and family that may abuse the knife. dont get me wrong i use the F out of all my knives, but i agree some jobs are to dirty or rough for something that cost $100+

example: my mother works at a private stable and takes care of some ladys horses and pastures and whatnot, i was with her one day and we where walking the fence line to the back of the property when my mom sees a small pepper tree groing up the fence, she tries to pull it out and has some trouble and asks for my knife, i dont think much of it, kinda thought she would just cut the small tree off at the base or something.... she then started digging my spyderco native throughout the dirt, cutting the roots and digging it out!!! i was like WHOA WHAT ARE YOU DOING! not that the native is very expensive but still.. i started carrying a $20 swiss army knife in my back pocket for those situations

I don't cut stuff that will damage a blade, but I'm a little bit weird. The time it takes me to find a wire cutter or pry bar is less than the time it takes to grind out a chipped blade or return it for repair.

I bear no ill will against those who abuse their own blades. I just don't find any reason to do it.

Lol i've been kind of guilty...ok very guilty... of babying my Benchmades, but i've been thinking about this too and was thinking about getting a Spyderco Tenacious as a designated beater, but then I realized, what was the point of having nice Benchmades if they weren't even getting used the their full extent so now i have no problem taking my Benchmade Bedlam to some skateboard grip tape or heavy garden duty... just something i've come to figure out in the last couple weeks. I still might get a Spyderco Tenacious just to see what I can throw at it though :D

I definitely babied my nicer knifes for a while but throughout the year of having actually nice knives I have com to this conclusion.
(for reference these are my EDC's
1.Benchmade Griptilian PE
2.Benchmade Barrage PE
3.Spyderco Native PE

Number One. Use the knife. That's what their for. If it doesn't hold up to the test. Its no good.
Number Two. If you don't know how. Learn to hand sharpen.
Number Three. If it is really scary. I use the Leatherman
Number Four. IMPORTANT. Most of you would agree that in an emergency situation a primary knife could be used for defensive purposes. So never lend anyone your primary. Its like giving someone your gun.
I found this out the hard way. This co-worker borrowed mine. I found they went to cut some fabric on top of a metal counter. CRINGE.

I EDC a Buck stockman, so I don't worry much at all about it. If it's something like skateboard grip tape I just use the spey blade; I have it at a pretty stout angle for exactly that kind of thing. Having three blades means one of them can be your "beater" and the way my 301 is ground the spey blade is very fat at the tip anyway.

I keep a SAK in the backpack I carry to work everyday. If there's a dirty job suitable for a knife but I don't want to use what's in my pocket, I'll go get my SAK. Doesn't happen very often though. It's mostly there for the tools.

There is a difference between using a knife hard and abusing it on stupid stuff. Abuse literally means 'misuse'. I use my EDC hard on stuff that knives are meant for.

Use the knives thats what thier meant for.....i carry to blades hoping they can get the job done, a delica and a ZT blade, interchanging the ZT the blades

My EDC is a Spyderco Tenacious, and I use it hard. However, I carry a small slipjoint on my key ring if someone needs to borrow a knife to cut something, mainly so I don't scare non-knife people.

anybody else carry a dedicated knife just in case you have a job that will trash the blade?

No. I just carry my knife. If I am into a project that requires cutting a bunch of drywall or such, I'll go get a razor knife. But if I am out and about, or if it is a single cut, I expect whatever knife I am carrying to do the job. That's why I carry a knife.

I do:thumbup: This absolutely does everything I ask of it, sandpaper, drywall, wire, fiberglass, grip tape, opens quickcrete bags etc... :)
