Anybody EDC a beater

For cutting things such as the 3M Stair Step tape, very similar to skateboard tape, that I use to cover my pocket clips with, I use a box cutter that uses single edge razor blades. This works out really well and is very cheap to operate!:)

If I can't bring myself to use my edc knife, I can't bring myself to edc it. They're all beaters, regardless of price.

I agree with not loaning your primary one out. I carry multiple knives. None of them are expensive. If the task is abusive, I'd use one of the smaller knives, never the primary. If it's not long enough, my SAK OH Sentinel will be tasked to do it.

So, the primary gets the least chance of damaged, just in case.
At the end of the day, whatever damage is there, can be repaired or replaed.

So, no, I don't carry a dedicated beater. All of them are, depending on the task ;)

One note, loaning a non locking SAK to your mom for digging is risking the blade closing on her.

Typically I only EDC (working) my Kershaw Needs Work or an SRM 710. I'm not afraid to use them to their max. With paper wheels its nothing to put a better than factory edge back on it in under a minute.

Cutting a hydraulic return line (steel wire center) with the Kershaw turned it into a butter knife, but thats what its for. Enough use as the tip is starting to get rounded as it gets most of the use. Love that straight blade so easy to sharpen on a stone or anything.

I kind of find it annoying when people act like they "beat" their knives, yet could tell me its brand new and I can't tell the difference or dull knives! I like seeing pics of knives that get used like the one posted.

Gerber EAB with the replaceable razor blades for the super tough tasks and super stupid people who don't know how to use knives :D. Otherwise I use my regular EDC, or my Leatherman Wave.

You all should see the wear and grime on my knives just from the places that I carry them. Much less the things I do to them.

It's funny, the reason I found blade forums is because i was looking for a new EDC (since I broke the tip off my mine and it developed a ton of blade play from opening paint cans, and then the clip fell off and the blade started turning to rust etc etc) Now I see a thread asking do you actually use your knife :D

One time I built an 800 sqft work shop. I used my Benchmade Dejavoo to cut all the tar paper and asphalt shingles when I roofed it.

I guess this Spartan is the closest thing to a beater that I own. It gets plenty of carry/use and still has no play whatsoever.

isnt a EDC knife spose to be the beater and the knife you occasionally carry the not beater? i edc a delica because i dont worry about beating on it. i just dont like cutting the fiber reinforced tape because it dull my knife and i dont want to sharpen it.

The beauty of owning several knives is being able to choose a suitable blade for the day. If you work in an office environment, you may not be carrying the same knife as you would on your day off. Or when you go backpacking. Or when you're helping a buddy tear down an old shed or put up new drywall. Or when you're out back doing some gardening... (ad infinitum.)

Problem is, some days don't go according to plan. So, for 'office days', it's not a bad idea to have a sturdier knife squirrelled away somewhere (maybe in a jacket pocket or bag) just in case. I mean, hey, my Victorinox Rambler is a nice little knife, but there's only so much it can do! :p

Exactly!^

Different knives for different uses and occasions for me. I wouldn't want to use a nice gentalmans folder to cut insulation or skateboard tape even though it could, just like as a car fanatic I wouldn't use a beautiful cherry condition 67 Vette to tow a camper through the woods even though it's got plenty of power.

...I personally don't think to myself "well the Vette has four wheels, it's a vehicle, so I expect it to perform ANY vehicle task I may require."

Though I've seen people who do that too. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I like to take care of most of my things, and use my dedicated beaters for the nasty stuff, and yes some times even to do things that could be considered abuse, just because it's fun and I enjoy it.

That way I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds: I have my nice collectables AND my hard use beaters. It's why I own more than one knife. :)

.so wait. you carry two knives and are scared to use either of them? why carry them in the first place if you're not going to use your knives to cut? get yourself a two bladed SAK and be done with it.

My ZT0200 and my BM 13100 Hardtail see the dirty work - but I, like others, try not to pry or do things with my knives that they are not designed to do.

My 13100 Hardtail in D2 holds a working edge for a long time.

I've also got a few cheapo utility razor knives laying around the house for the nasty stuff.

I do:thumbup: This absolutely does everything I ask of it, sandpaper, drywall, wire, fiberglass, grip tape, opens quickcrete bags etc... :)

Now there's a knife that works for a living! It's not pretty or beautiful, but it is kinda ruggedly handsome - I like the way it looks like a working tool not a safe queen.

I always try to have the appropriate tool for the job, but if I have a sneaking suspicion that I will end up abusing my knife I do have a Boker Bulldog that stands up to abuse surprisingly well. And it was cheap enough that I won't be heartbroken if I break it or it gets swiped.

That's the way I look at it, too.
My primary carry is gonna be something that can take abuse. Whether or not I'm going to also tote a fancy piece of pocket candy depends on where I'm going/what I'm doing.

I always have my case peanut on me for cutting tasks. At work, I have an old sak Spartan for loaning out, that way, if someone needs a screwdriver, they'll probably use the screwdriver and not the blade. If I know I'm going to be doing something tough, like hard repairs or maintenance on something, I'll grab my leatherman. Different tools for different jobs.
