Anybody EDC a beater

I carry and use my knives, when I'm at the office I cArry a knife with a small thin blade for office chores like shaving file folder labels off so I can relabel and reuse a file. When I go to the field I carry a moe heavy duty folder with a thicker blade. I use knives to cut and slice, I use pry bars or flat head screw drivers for prying and screw drivers for.... It's the whole right tool for the job thing. No need for beaters

Is this the one with D2. I just received one myself. seeing that you put this one to some good use. what did you think about resharpening it? re-curve cause you any issues?

It is the D2 version and absolutely no issues when it comes to sharpening it on my Spyderco Sharpmaker:thumbup: It's a great slicer/cutter. When I need to pry I get the right tool but when I need to cut THIS is the right tool;)

My beater EDC is Kershaw Shallot with an S-110-V blade. It's a little heavy (SS handles), but the edge retentention is stupendous.

I EDC a Strider SMF CC.....don't baby it at all. Use it to cut, pry, hammer, prep food......etc. Sharpening skills are coming along nicely :) When it's time to replace i'll do so but it's my "one stop shop"

Here's a question. If you took the time to go upstairs to get a beater knife, why didn't you just get a pair of scissors? It's skateboard grip tape after all. I rather cut that with scissors to make it uniform. I mean you actually went upstairs.... A knife does have uses when you have nothing else nearby, but you went back up.

On topic: No, I don't have a beater knife. My knives all get used. I use my HTM DDR Gunhammer just as much as my Bill Coye Ridgeback. Neither are what I'd consider bargain priced knives.

Thanks for the info. It is such an awesome knife ( now that I have the 710 for a few days). I've learned how to sharpen it on flat stones( I've rounded the corners of the stone). It has been great learning this new technique because now I'm not afraid to cut anything with it. Time to put it to good use. Now the only thing I have to conquer is to cowboy up and use the thing anywhere. I've been nice and don't want to frighten people. It seems like any knife that you can actually get a good firm grip on is almost unacceptable in a lot of areas.

Time to set a new trend.

what do you guys think?

If I know I'm going to do some outdoor (yard, whatever) work I take my beater knife.
Usually when I change in to my work clothes I also change my knife.

On the other hand I don't baby my knives, that's why I carry relative cheap ($40) knives.

Ok guys, so here is an update.

I did decide to carry a beater, and it was a srm 710. Turned out it was a really really good decision.

I don't remember the last time I had that much fun with one of my knives, me and my buddies would throw it during smoke breaks, I would get it nasty and not care, it was awesome. The only bad thing about having higher end knives is that I have a tendency to baby them a little bit, so it was great having the complete freedom of doing whatever I want to this little thing

Then, two of my buddies asked to borrow a knife, so I let them use the SRM. One was former army and one was former marines, so I figured they were at least somewhat knife-competent, and if they weren't it was just a 7 dollar POS anyhow. They used it to pry a locker open and snapped the blade off. Thank God I didn't lend out my Al Mar Sere 2k or my Demko custom recon, both of which I was carrying at the same time.

So now, I got another SRM710 on the way, and I got the BM mini Pika II riding in my pocket now as a temporary replacement.

So long story short, I highly recommend having a cheaper thing to abuse/lend out. I suspect that most people have plenty of knives that could fit in that role. I've got plenty of backups should I break my mini pika, including gerber powerframe, smith & wessons, byrds, and others.

I carry an old Spyderco Endura 3 most of the time as my EDC/beater that I got well used on E-Bay for $30. I also carry and use my other knives but none of them cost very much <$100. I would avoid damage to a $100+ knife so that is one reason I have not bought one.

In 1986, I bought 4 SOG Stingray knives.

I put this one in my pocket (along with my large keyring) the day I bought them and carried it every day. After about 10-years (1996), the kraton handles had just about worn away to nothing and another 10-years wore all traces of glue and kraton material off the frame.

Here's how it looks today. I still carry it or a newer one everyday. I've never abused it but I do use it for almost anything/everything.

Here's one of the other SOG Stingray knives I bought the same day I bought the one above and is exactly what the one above looked like on day one.

I wouldn't call the first knife a beater but it has been around the block a time or two.

I carry what seems best. Although I use my Chinese knives more than my Case knives, I buy them to use.
It is similar to on some gun forums when discussing self defense firearms some say that they would not carry a$2000 custom gun because if they were involved in a shooting the gun would be siezed as evidence and may not be returned. Yet the stated reason for purchase is reliability and superior feel. But they will not carry it.

Are knives much the same and to use them damages the expensive knives, so they must be kept in a safe?:):)

Jerry

Just ordered a leatherman style cs for just such occasions.
And the good news is that the carabiner prybar will extend the life of the blade considerably :-P

I have Timberline Workhorse(large, Plain edge) and I really like the knife.

It's my "weekend" knife. Week dayis my Camillus Heat, can't be beat !

I'm looking at picking up one of the 2 Gerber Bear Grylls folding knives, I figure for $20-$21 bucks if something bad happens to it....eh

That way if/when I get the BM Triage I really want, I can keep it nice...

My "beater" is a Byrd. For the price, the Byrd's are a steal. I don't really have a beater since I don't abuse knives, I use them for their intended purpose: cutting.

If I ever have to do something particularly nasty, I use the blade on my Leatherman Squirt (that I use as a keychain, so I always have it).

I still wouldn't hesitate to use my EDC if I had to. If the Squirt wasn't appropriate or for some weird reason I didn't have it on me. I can always resharpen a knife if I have to, but I like to keep them that way for when I'm doing something that having a really sharp blade will help with.

If I anticipate some "abuse" might be happening that day, I will grab a beater in addition to the EDC and squirt. One time it was a good thing I did!

I was at work and somebody asked to borrow my knife to cut some sandpaper. So I handed him my CRKT M16-10Z. I thought cutting the sandpaper was bad enough, but when I saw HOW he was going to cut the sandpaper I really cringed. He laid the sandpaper right on the ashphalt and scraped the blade down it to cut
