Anybody out there a fan of vintage meat cleavers or lamb splitters???

Doesn't really strike me as a true cleaver--more like an "ayda khatti" or some sorts of heavy Italian billhooks. I don't like it. It would be more interesting to me if they straightened out the handle.

Hers a pic i took a cupla weeks back of a traditional Butchery in a small town ive been working in...its been in the family for 108 years...He gave me the Ebony steel and old butcher knives...for a coin!...... just thought id share.....FES

I just placed an order for 2-14" butchers steels, 7", 8", 9" Heavy Duty Cleavers !! All made in America, on sale & free shipping. Waiting---waiting... LOL :D Not vintage, but they will be some day.

My Uncle has about the coolest looking cleaver I have ever seen. It is huge and heavy and old with a full tang and riveted wood handle. The proportions and lines of it are so perfect but i have been out to there house in awhile so when i go out there this weekend Ill get some better info on what it is and snap a few pics.

1/4" thick. Man these suckers are Heavy Duty & just plain heavy. I LOVE em. If you swung one of theses all day, 5 days a week, you would have a Popeye arm in no time. :D 7", 8", 9" cleavers & a 14" butchers steel. All Made in America !!! Came VERY sharp, almost shave paper but not quite. That will change after Cristmas. Back under the tree now. :D

As I collect edge tools, I was offered a number of meat cleavers some time ago - declined them as had spent too much on billhooks. I probably still have the e-mail, and who knows the chap may still have them... If interested send me your e-mail address by PM or via my website (www.billhooks.co.uk) and I'll foward it to him to see if they are still available....

I'd be interested if they weren't on the other side of the Atlantic! :D

42Blades, just noticed all the large F. Dick splitters are gone from my favorite F. Dick cleaver store !!! Did you buy them ??? :D Wasn't me.

I recently acquired this beautiful cleaver from etsy. There are no markings on the blade, but it does read FOSTER BROS. imprinted on the wood handle (which is not visible in these pics). It doesn't look like any other Foster Bros. cleaver I've ever seen! Can anyone give me more info on it? Much appreciated! Check it out:

Hi all,

Sorry I am unable to post pixs due to major (read OLD Computer) problems. I should be looking to replace my old Computer instead of buying Knives, Axes, Hatchets, Machetes, Meat Cleavers, etc. At any rate, I think mines BIGGER!
My (me thinks) Circa 1920's-30's NICHOLS BROS (Greenfield MA) "Beef Splitter" is a whopping two and a half feet in OAL!
The cutting edge is ten inches and the blade is seven inches at it's widest point (front of blade) and twelve inches diagonal. The back spine of the blade at it's thickest point is almost unreal at a HALF INCH thick! The handle (metal with wood) is eighteen inch long. The overall condition of this awesome vintage "Beef Splitter" is quite good indeed. That being said, I don't know what I'm going to do with this MONSTER Cleaver. I just had to buy it if for nothing else it's WTF factor! I mean, this thing is Mid-evil looking lol. I can't believe someone swung this bad boy all day for a living. I hope to later post this "Beef Splitter" (if I can ever post a pix) in/on the BF "Trade page" as truthfully, I would rather have a (high quality) CUSTOM made Nessmuk knife (I think).
We shall see!

Regards,
HARDBALL
