Anybody use a Double Edge or Straight Razor

I shave with a straight when I shave or a DE gillette black beauty (long handled adjustable) when I have had a bad day or am increasingly frustrated

With the price of Mach 3 and other multi blade razors I went back to a Double Edge. A Merkur 34c to be exact with a boars brush and shaving cream/soap. Shaving seems more relaxing and nostalgic. I always felt I should have been born in the 20s or 30s. Now if I could only get some Infi razor blades. :D
yes please, I'd be one of those lining up to buy one

My usual double is an old Gillette Fatboy. I've got a collection of straights too, but that's more for days I'm not working, and I can take the time to enjoy a shave. I tell people who are incredulous that I'd shave with a cut throat razor, that it is marvellous for improving your concentration.

It improved my concentration, I was diagnosed with ADD and let me tell you, if I can't make myself concentrate long enough for the shave....ouch (in which case I'm using a DE), but it definitely helped. I notice myself concentrating better whenever I shave more regularly. It also helps a lot to get a steady hand, My hands have always shook a lot, but the more I use a straight razor, the more I find myself having a steadier hand...

but anyways, I shave with a collection of straights, my current favorites are a frame back that I had restored that shaves wonderfully and a genco easy aces that I scored on when I found it. Combined with Mawmaw bears sandalwood and vanilla soap (I need to get something different, I'm getting tired of it)

oh, and required pics

and now I can't find my easy aces, it is somewhere in my apartment (or God forbid, i'll never find it, my truck)

You guys got some nice looking equipment.

I got Leroy Browns razor. Took it away from him in South Chicago. :D

I use an old Gillette Superspeed NDC with a synthetic brush and Mikes Natural or Vanderhagen soap, I'm trying to use up some of my soap stash before I try Cella and a few others out, sadly even though I shave every day it seems like they last forever. The closest thing to infi DE blades are the no longer produced Personna 74 tungsten steel blades, many who use them and are experienced DE shavers get around 2-4x the lifetime out of them compared to most DE blades.

I would try using a straight razor but after four or five cups of coffee in the morning hands tend to get a little shaky.

Amen! After years of increasing Mach's I'm glad to be shaving with both DE's and SR.

I turned these about a year back. Gotta love burls and spalted woods!

DE razor for the days that require close work.
Hair clipper for the rest.

Disposable razor for travel.

When I was little my grandfather made me learn how to use both a double edged razor and a straight razor. I thought I was terrified giving him a shave with the double edged razor until he handed me a straight razor. I was convinced that I would end up killing him in no time. I had to practice on a balloon before he'd asked me to give him a shave, but I was still one scared kid.

what economics..:D

wet shaving is like knife collecting you can't justify it (at least in economic terms) but you sure enjoy the ride

+1!!! All over the shaving forums they were talking about how it's cheaper than disposable razors...

Now I have an Edwin Jagger DE89, a Merkur Futur, and a Dovo 6/8 straight razor, a lot of soaps from Mike's Natural Soaps, The Stirling Soap Company, Mystic Water Soaps, Mitchell's Wool Fat, and Prairie Creations, Trumpers, etc. DE razor blades of all kinds, boar & badger brushes, antique Old Spice mugs, etc. Less money my @$$. LOL. And this is all in about 4 weeks time!

X2, cheaper my a$$, it technically is if you can deal with having just 1 razor, 1 strop, 1 brush, and 1 or 2 soaps....but how many people will except just that much...the collecting bug bit me bad so it isn't cheaper.

Consumable cost per shave is still lower, it's just a matter of self con... oh look Mike's has a new scent!

what is this Mike's you speak of?

I usually use mama bears, but want to try something new

Mike's Natural Soaps. http://www.mikesnaturalsoaps.com/Mikes_Natural_Soaps/Shaving_Soaps.html A one man operation out of Brooklyn NY, guy making the soap is actually working on his PhD while he's doing the soap thing on the side. A tallow/lanolin based soft soap usually scented with essential oils, and occasionally fragrance oils when the EO is prohibitive in cost. So far my absolute favorite soap but I haven't tried that many yet. You can get samples of pretty much every scent he makes for around 15 or 20 bucks shipped, and each one lasts almost 2 weeks of daily shaving (at least the way I make lather, it's easily at least a weeks worth even if you're a lather monster) I do recommend trying the whole assortment, some of the scents I expected to love ended up 2nd to the ones I thought I wouldn't like, turns out they were fantastic (I adore the rose/cedar and peppermint rosemary). He's recently come out with a Hungarian Lavendar, Vetiver, and Coconut I haven't had a chance to try yet.

The Lemongrass Eucalyptus and Barbershop are my favorites so far.
