Anybody use a Double Edge or Straight Razor

Is that silver box a blade sharpener? Do you use it successfully?

Thanks

The silver box is called a rolls razor, it has a hone and a strop built into it, if you move the handle back and forth it will automatically hone or strop it depending on which side you have removed. I have one, but am missing the shaving handle...wish I could find one

I was at an antique mall a couple weeks ago that had several of those silver boxes (rolls razors), old double edge razors, straight razors, odd old bottles and just parts and pieces. Next time I'm there I take a look see. Do you have a picture of the part you need?

Just found a place about an hour away that still does straight razor shaves. Gonna have to try it at least once.

Garth,

Just a word of caution. SR shaving is all but gone nowadays. Barbers today are not at the same skill level as they used to be (at least here in NY and I have come across similar reports from Badger&Blade members). I sure hope the barber at the place you about to visit knows what he is doing and keeps his razor(s) sharp.

Most straight razors barbers use these days are Dovo or Feather shavette type straights with replaceable pre-sharpened blades, so sharpness shouldn't be an issue. Skill level though still very much applies. Don't expect the closest shave ever, but it should look good and be mostly razorburn free.

I use a 1970 Gillette Super Speed with Feather blades. I have found this combo to give an AMAZINGLY close shave with zero "razor burn". I can now shave daily with no discomfort. The shaves are easily as close as my previous Mach 5 blades, but less irritation. I find that you just have to slow down and find your optimal angle. It takes a couple shaves to get it right, but when you do it is pure pleasure. I use Art of Shaving Sandalwood soap, in a teak wood bowl. I also have a nice badger brush. I very much think if you are willing to slow down and "enjoy" the experience, you cannot beat the shave. I chose the 1970 Gillette because its my birth year razor. Amazing that a 43 year old razor outperforms the new whiz bang products. Hmmmmm.

This thread made me think of watching Sweeney Todd so i watched it last night and i am kind of rethinking the whole straight razor shave thing. What if the barber was just having one of those days?

If I can ever get ahold of one, I think I have someone who can rehone the blade for me. the fine hone that is in the rolls just isn't enough, it needs to be honed probably starting at a 1000 grit and go up from there. Either way, since I got this thing I have been wanting to try shaving with it.

let us know how it goes

There is a place in here in blacksburg that still gives shaves. There are 2 guys in there who do, one is a younger guy and the other is an older guy, who if I had to guess started out giving shaves with a real razor rather than a replaceable blade thing. I have brought my personal razors in before for them to use, this gave me a more comfortable shave than the shavette they use. I have only had a shave from the young guy and he isn't that good, I can get a better (and more comfortable) shave myself. I really need to go in and get one from the older gentleman though.

It is definitely a dying art. I have gotten a royal shave at an Art of Shaving store (expensive...especially when compared to my local barber). The shave was great though, and very comfortable. I never would have paid for it, but my mother got it for me as a gift...picked me up and told me that I had an appointment.

I understand. I'll see what they have.

Thanks, I stopped looking for the handle a while back, now I just keep an eye out, and if I see one, I will pick it up. One of these days I'm gonna get tired of waiting and try and make one. Don't know how yet, but I will try lol

Probably won't get around to it til after Blade Show but really think I'm gonna try it.

I couldn't find one. It was worth a try though, they had quite a collection of old shaving stuff. I'll still keep an eye open for one. ;)

Love my DE. Merkur Futur Adjustable Safety razor. Can't recommend it enough. Matter of fact used it this morning before I had a meeting.

Absolutely correct. This is great. Bought 100 Wilkinson blades for like $17.00. My barber told me they were the best. Amazing shave.
