Anybody want to explain the Starlingear Striders to me?

Whatever floats your boat. I have gotten a few strange looks when asked what I do and I said I make custom knives. I have become a little more tolerant of others habits and hobbies and some of them are just entertaining to watch.

Does anyone else wonder what the increasing popularity of skull designs signifies?

Can't speak to anyone else, but I have been into skulls since I was 10.....mouse skulls, bird skulls, coyote skulls, goat skulls, bobcat skulls, jackal skulls, cow skulls and of course, human skulls....it's the most interesting of skeletal remains, by far more interesting than hand or feet/paws, whatever. It can be difficult to render an interesting and cool looking skull graphically or sculpturally until you have really studied them....couldn't repeatedly draw them until I had tattooed about 500+, and started to get a feel for the line flow and shadow depth.

I'm also fascinated by colorful shiny insects.

That's ok Steven, Neon signs/lights fascinate me every time :) I'm especially drawn to the ones that say something along the lines of "Live Nudes"....

Seriously though, skulls do have the kind of "cool factor". Those are out of my price range for sure, but lanyards, neck sheaths etc... always seem to look cooler with some skulls on them.

Thread's turning pretty comical. :D

It isn't just marketing, it is the product, imo. They hit on designs that people find compelling.

I don't like them all but some of those designs are really cool. They do look a lot more artistic than the ones i'm used to seeing.

Gary Gilmore was just a straight murderous psycho/sociopath, rather than Dahmer, who was a homosexual cannibal/necrophiliac corpse mutilator.

Sounds like a case of homophobia/veganism to me.:D

Not scared of homosexuals, Joe, have a few that have been good friends over the years, not the issue.

Worked in a slaughterhouse, and have brought home my own fresh kill of fine Choice beef.

To go back to the OP, it is simply a matter of taste and desire, I guess. The more I think about it, there is no way that the jeweler I work with for projects would take on making a bead like this out of lead, let alone sterling, for less than $200.00, so I guess that unless you have an "in" with cheap offshore labor, the price of the beads and other work, if it strikes you, is fairly fair and reasonable.

Well said. As time goes on I seem to be better able to appreciate some things even if unable to fully understand the value others may place in them. In this case, I actually like the Starlinger designs though I have no idea what I would do with them were I to own any. I do have a couple of Steel Flame pieces given to me by my friend Derrick Obatake that I treasure even though there are very few times when it is appropriate for me to wear them. In this case, the respect I have for Derrick expands my comfort level of wearing any kind of jewelry (other than wrist watches) to the point that I actually look forward to times when a silver skull clasped Ranger bracelet or a silver framed .45 bullet hole pendant is not totally out of place.

Just to clarify...all of Starlingear's stuff is made here by Jade, Ryk and Kimo, and then is sold via knife/gun shows where Strider is in attendance, and of course, over in Japan where there is a huge market for intricately designed silver pieces.

I am the fella Eli and Ken mentioned, and I hope to someday be able to buy them shots for going out of the way to grab me those beads.

I am also building a friendship with Derrick Obatake (www.steelflame.com) and I LOVE his designs. Aside from that, Derrick is just a genuinely nice person. I rock one of his .45 killboxes every day.

I used to have a Starlingear SnG Strider (top). It was nice but I ended up trading it while it was still mint. I kept the TAD Gear Strider (bottom) and carry it. That one goes in my "never sell" pile.

I knew it!!:D

This young man is "larger than life" ... and those beads seem a good match for his bigger than normal personality.

Hmm. I've been hanging around here for three years, and I never knew Mr. Garsson was a tatoo artist. I've no tatoos myself -- just not my thing. But I've learned enough humility over a fairly long life to appreciate that art.;)

earlier this month at the Marine Legion Hall bar , I was able to talk and listen while ( whom I believe was Ryk , I am terrible with names ) , the creating of the Starlingear rings , etc was discussed.

While I admit , they are not for me , the level of craftsmanship in his work is incredible. The detail is amazing. Listening to him and a friend of mine ( tattoo artist ) discuss art , painting , charcoal , wax , casting , ink and other artistic facets was intriguing.

It was a great conversation to be a part of , I came away with a higher sense of what goes into the making of their products.

Great people , great designs , are they cheap ? no , but they are not cheaply made either , designed and made in the US , with no corners cut , I applaud them for not sacrificing quality and sticking to solid work. For the workmanship and materials , the pricing is a bargain.

Amazing that those who shell out big $$$ for knives , will quickly criticize another mans handy work. Those who collect Starlingear stuff are no different than those of us that collect knives , watches , cars , etc.

I hope they have continued success in 2010 , and in this economy , they are selling all they make , and that is a good thing for a small american business.
