Anybody want to explain the Starlingear Striders to me?

it would be nice for an American business to make their product more accessible to Americans. if you want to sell majority to the Japanese move the business to Japan.

At first I was curious why such small silver beads were so expensive. Then I got the chance to handle one of Starlingear's Emerson Skull rings. The detail and craftsmanship is second to none. Not long ago I would have never thought to spend that kind of money on something like that. Now I am getting ready to order my 1st Starlingear piece, a ring and contemplating a second, a bead.

Each one of us have those things that bring us pride of ownership or joy of use that others don't understand. For some it is rare bottles of wine or liquor. For others it is fast or rare cars. Others appreciate fine hand crafted cutting tools. To each their own.

Doug, I've bought a fair amount of Starlingear stuff directly from them, and I would say that their product is actually quite accessible in the US. You just happen to be banned from the forum that they do the majority of their American business on, so you're probably not able to see that.

Ken I am a good standing member of the USN, you can verify this with Barry Jones as he was the one to lift my ban there two years ago.

And I said accessible to Americans not the usn, there is a difference here.

I didn't know that you were back on the USN. You must either have a new username, or you just don't post much anymore. Either way, no problem.

Still, I disagree with you that Starlingear is not accessible in the US outside the USN. They attend nearly every major knife show in the nation, and they can be contacted through their website. They are busy and sometimes take a while to get back to you, but they do get back to you. They are no less accessible than any in-demand custom knifemaker in the US, and I think they are easier to reach and buy from than most.

Very good point !

yeah, I have had emails and pm's go unanswered for the better part of a year now. anyways I do not like their silver jewlery and beads on knives arent my thing but I wouldnt have minded getting one of their wallets, oh well. BWL responded within a day and sold me a wallet.

i met ryk maverick and had lunch with him a few months back. nice guy. he designs jewelry and also does designs for restaurants for a friend of mine.

Saw some of these at the show today and they looked good. The rings were under glass so didn't get a close look, but nice designs. There were some nice looking bronze beeds as well with an interesting pattern.

I'm trying to figure out the whole Starlingear thing. I've seen the Starlingear skull beads dangling off lots of production Striders, and now whole SLG themed customs. What is Starlingear, and what makes their stuff so coveted, pricey, and in demand?

I just now found a video on youtube , of the strider/Starlingear collab, and after going to their site, im still confused, ok so there is a niche in Japan for craftsmanship and attention to detail, thats no surprise, that appreciation dates back to the time of samurai , the love they poured into each blade, but I still dont understand Starlingear's marketing, america has a market for those items too , and what crazy is , by their being such a foreign market , willing to pay TOP dollar for an american made product, lets them stay in the japanese market only , thus RAISING the demand here in america, and by staying overseas, allows them to get TOP dollar here in america. Its a brilliant business strategy, though they should at least have an american blog explaining this , or a youtube channel showing the detail that so many speak about:)

so you want them to move jobs out of America you are criticizing them for this correct?

Let's give the man who started the whole skull craze a little credit shall we?

I personally don't care for their beads. I see them as a decoration that's aimed at selling a image rather than a useful piece of gear.

I just traded for three beads last week..I sold them and nearly doubled my money...The detail and workmanship is very high quality..
