anybody watch the show survivorman?

i like him & bear...beats watching "america's next top model" or "you think you can dance", or any of the other idiotic shows on nowadays

Big thumbs up for Les. His out-takes are the best. One time he was in Alaska, starving as usual, when he got almost-busted by some Forest Ranger types who thought he was fishing commercially. The day Les actually catches a fish, will be the day I call the weather service and check on the snow storms in Hades. I give him props for keeping the filming as realistic as possible by showing everything, screwups and all. :)

I like them both but don't agree with alot of what both does or says, I think Les is much more inline of the way you need to Survive, If you acted and did the things Bear does, you just might get killed or at the least very sick.

I agree, Les is the man. Les portrays actual events that could occur to someone, I think les show would be great to watch and learn if you were planning to try out for Survivor.. The funniest Baer show I saw was when he ate 2 grubs that made him sicker than a dog. Goes to show you, not everything you find wiggling in the wild is edible.

Yeah I like that show too. Don't know how usefull it actually is, but entertaining anyway. I particulary like the ones where he is in an environment he obviously knows best; the canadian forrests etc. I mean, it's kinda intresting to see how to survive on a deserted island in the middle of the pacific, but a familiar looking environment is more to my liking.

I can't see why people give Bear such a hard time though... he's show, even if not as good as Survivorman, is still way better than 99,9% of the crap that comes out of the TV. I'm sure he's done some stunts that 99% of the folk here could't (and wouldn't :D) do, and even though some of them are silly in survival-aspect, you gotta give some respect to the guy. I think it's made clear enough, that it is a show, not a document. The people trying out these stunts are propably the same ones that as a kid tried out show-wrestling moves.

Anyway, Im kinda envious too. I mean... not because he gets to eat maggots and drink elephant poo juice, but think about it... the guy runs around in the forrests all day, travels around the globe, and gets paid to do so :)

Anyone here who likes Ray Mears? He doesn't claim to be in "all alone in the vast wilderness" with a shadow of a hotel-complex in the picture, so it's not so much a "survival show" as these two, but a really good and informative show anyway, with a layback attitude

I love it!!! I'm watching the canadian arctic one right now and he eats these two tiny little flowers, then says, mmmm I'm full... Love it!!
I don't have cable TV(don't want to pay for all the BS that's on) and I've really enjoyed season 1 so far, picked up a few things too. I'm hooked, I just wish there was a bit more in the realm of actual survival education

Survivorman is one of my favorite TV shows.

I think that it's amusing how a conversation about Les Stroud nearly always spawns talk of Bear Grylls, and vice versa.

The Hoods Woods videos are far more instructional. You should check them out if you have a chance.

I really like Survivorman.

I like how he sometimes just comes out with stuff that isn't along the internet party lines. Like the dog sled one in Labrador. "Why do I have an axe? Because no self-respecting dog sled runner would not have one, and I wouldn't be caught dead int he Candian North without an axe." So much for ultralight all the way, no matter the location.

The best thing is he shows his screwups, and when he gets in over his head and says "Sscrew it, I'm headed for camp."

I see Man vs Wild as an adventure show, not an instructional show.

But if people insist on it beign instructional, look at it this way: Bear shows you how to get INTO trouble, Les shows you how to get OUT of trouble.

Ron Hood shows how to do it without bothering to get into trouble.

Anyone here who likes Ray Mears?

I've only caught one of his shows, the one in which he visited the part of Belarus where there is a large forest that, during WW2, a group of Jewish partisans survived for several years. There story combined both wilderness survival and epic 'escape and evasion'. It was pretty interesting, to me, as it combined both survival with history (to of my hobby interests).

Ray was shown some of their bushcraft techniques, like making shoes out of bark, and otherwise illustrated some of the ones he knew already.

Ray seems a bit geeky, neither quite as laid-back as Les or as (I assume, since I've never actually watched his show) gung-ho as Bear, which is fine. I'm probably a mix of Ray and Les.

My boys watch both shows a lot. Les seems like a nervous wreck sometimes, but Bear Grylls has a habit that really annoys me. Anytime he comes near water of any kind, it's like Steve Irwin just spotted a snake - he gets all excited and leaps into the water.

Seems like when that show is on, every time I look at it, that dude is jumping into some water.

My favorite is Les but I do enjoy Ray as well, I think over the last decade or so he has done 2 or 3 different BBC series. I do enjoy Bear to a lesser amount, I just don't like his intro where he states he is teaching you how to survive and then does things that are dangerous.

My favorite Mears show is the one he did in a canoe here in Canada
I do like that Les has stopped the whole "I don't like to kill anything" bs everytime he kills a bug or whatever

My one complaint is he is always saying how bad he feels about killing some animal, snake, etc to eat but "since it is a survival situation all animals are fair game". I thought all animals are fair game at least during the hunting season.:D

In an interview, Les mentioned how some outdoorsmen mention they want to see more trapping and hunting while others mention they want to see less animal killing. Whether or not he legitimately dislikes killing animals for survival, I believe he states his remorse in order to cater to both crowds.

I like surviverman & man vs wild.I agree that Les does far more work (with little or no help at all),than Bear.
I just like watching Bear, because he eats the most disgusting stuff.:barf:He'd probably, definately win on Fear Factor:p

I am a huge Ray Mears fan, watched and have recorded on my computer every one of his shows and have a couple of his books somewhere. He really knows his stuff. Theres a few series where he simply goes around the world to indigenous tribes and learns how they survive. There have been a couple episodes where he had to re-teach a tribe how to make fire because they had lost that knowledge!

Les can whine alot, but I like his show for the "reality tv" aspect, pretty fun. Bear Grills is pretty good too though, real fun to watch, even though hes a bit silly sometimes!:p
