Every so often someone a friend a family member whoever will tell me oh "so and so is really into knives to!..." and then at some point im either talking to this person or find myself at there place and they have a bunch of flea market swords on the wall or a gas station knife collection. I don't know why it bugs me but i hate talking to those people more than the people who are more or less oblivious to knives. I'm not a knife snob i have Cheaper knives and some knives that cost more than my first car what matters to me is functionality and quality and it drives me a little crazy when both of those factors is completely lost on someone.
No point to this rant i guess just venting to the people who are most likely to understand lol.

I understand where you're coming from. But one thing to keep in mind is that people collect for different reasons. What is important to you in your collection may not be important for someone else. We all collect what we like and I think that that should be respected. Perhaps someone collecting gas station knives reminds them of their childhood and they relive the good times every time they look at their collection. Who knows, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When someone shares what they collect, to me it's more interesting to know what the collection means to that person, rather than the collection itself.

Just my 2 cents.

Bugs me just as much if not more, but only at first. I generally find that such people don't mind hearing about higher quality options and some even go for them.

when people are open to learning about what makes a quality knife they redeem themselves to me, its the people who argue that the knife they use is just as high quality or better that make my eye twitch lol its doing it right now just thinking of it.

I enjoy this as an opportunity. I will usually talk to them about some of my knives, ZTs and such. They usually like them, and then I help them start getting better knives.

nope. everyone likes different things. i'll tell them what i think if they ask and want to know what i honestly think. if they don't, i don't rain on their parade. that's me though.

I'm pretty sure in every category of collecting there are low dollar blowhards. When I was a mechanic I'd have wannabe's try to explain how their 19 dollar harbor freight impact was just as good as my 250 dollar Ingersoll Rand. If it's collectable, there's a know it all willing to show how to save a buck. Anyway the best way to deal with them is nod like you agree and get away asap.

Life is too short to let that kind of stuff get to you. Smile and move on :)

Doesn't bother me either. One friend collects knives and swords based on how they look. He has no concerns about blade steel or durability because he will never use them. They are just displays.

Nope. Not a bit. I don't look down on other peoples' knives that make them happy and that they are proud of.

I think hating talking to those people and pooh poohing the stuff that makes them happy is exactly what a knife snob does.

Absolutely, I recently discovered that a friend's dad was a "collector" he had a modern Buck 110, a German lockback "GENUINELY FROM GERMANY", and an airforce survival knife. It just bothers me when I think so much about knife design and philosophy that people who don't can call themselves "collectors"... rant over:D

Technically he is into knives if he has them hanging on the wall. They just aren't the quality your used too he probably likes that they look cool.

I can understand where you are coming from. I have friends that just don't get it. A neighbor of mine has a fortune in Frost knives and thinks he is setting on a gold mine. Many of his knives are all bling with little or no chance of ever being a functional knife because of poor design, poor workmanship and poor materials. I did give him a Wenger Soldier and now he is beginning to collect SAK Pioneers. Also, he has recently picked up three Kershaw Blurs. Maybe there is hope for my neighbor yet.

I agree. I will show them some of my knives and maybe give one to them. Then turn them on to this website. Bingo! once in awhile a new knife nut is born! :)

I say good for them. If they're HAPPY using or collecting something inexpensive they're better off. I AM a knife snob and it's expensive.

Uhm, yep 'Snob' is the word OP is demonstrating. Seems like a missed opportunity. A fellow invites you in to show you his 'treasures' and you berate the moment as sub par.
But he has a knife collection. Is not that indicative of an appreciation akin to yourself. Or did you wake up one day knife less and immediately buy the highest quality most expensive safe queen you could find?
There are a tremendous amount of people who do not like knives. Those folks have made it their mission in life to limit what and where I can carry my folder. The person with the inexpensive knife collection is NOT one of them, Savvy?

When I was a little kid I learned that if it exists someone collects it !
Like ask a guy from the NE about barbed wire fence collections !
Collections means just that , small , large, quality , quantity .
I've seen collections of very fine valueble things of beauty ,the other stuff is mostly for laughs ,you need some laughter in your life !

What someone has doesn't bother me. Everyone is entitled to their preferences and choice of whatever works for them. I don't even care if they agree with me or not...

People's attitude can be a problem though... The worst someone can do is to say that I cannot recognize or appreciate a quality knife simply because my knives are cheaper, not "cool looking", or have particular kind of knife design. It shows that they do respect my own perspective or preferences. I do not respect anyone that shows such disrespect! One thing is to disagree with one's perspective, and that's fine, another is to be pretentious about their own perspective.

What I said applies to those of you that above said that you would try to convince those people that your expensive knives are better... That's a clear example of not respecting the other guys. Ask them about their choices and try to understand where they are coming from. Remember, the guy with cheaper knives may be me... It is not that I do not appreciate those knives, and I somehow have preconceived ideas about those that have them, but I simply cannot rationalize having them or sending that much money on a knife.

Nah. At least they like knives. I'd much rather deal with them than the type of person who freaks out when I use my knife to cut a bagel.
