anyone els get frustrated when...?

The type of swords the OP mentions look bad from across the room, let alone in your hand. Why would anyone not be able to see the poor assembly, cheap materials and blurred stampings?

"Taste" is a tough one to define. You either have some measure of it, or you don't.

Point taken. Taste vary. :hopelessness: lol

Heck, it's rare enough to find someone interested in knives of any kind, so I'm pretty open to a discussion. Not into critiques / debates of my or their collections at all, at least not out loud. My tastes (traditional and now evolving into Japanese kitchen knives) aren't for everybody I'm sure, and it is fun to see and hear what puts a smile on the other persons face.

I do tend to save up and buy a few quality knives rather than multiple cheaper ones and explain rather than defend my choices if challenged on their "value".

O

I agree. It's far more common for someone to tell me they need something cut, and when I'm done, they ask me why I carry a knife. Huh? Always willing to talk collections, period.

I don't mind, I work in a job where most people have some sort of blade on them. It is fun to see all the different styles, sizes, brands etc. that people have. If they want to talk about there collection 10 Tac Force knives thats fine by me. What I find funny though is a lot of these guys will drop five grand on a gun but would never spend more that $20 on an EDC blade. To each their own..

Now that mullet is truly all business in the front and party in the back.

No way am I going to look down on someone for carrying or collecting cheap knives. Their cash they can spend it how they want. I've actually been poked at by coworkers when they found out how much some of my knives cost.

I'd rather be around cheap knives than someone scared to death of a case peanut , as they struggle to open a box with their fingernails or their car keys.

The only time this would bother me at all, is when that dude goes on to say what an idiot I am for paying $250 for a knife, when his will do the same thing for $10.
I see the same thing with pool cues.

If you work with them you will at least get the satisfaction at some point of watching them use both hands and 5-6 cuts to get through a single zip tie. If you're lucky you'll get to interrupt and cut a second one with your knife. Quickly, cleanly, safely and yet somehow no different in his mind.

How true Staple!!! You'll usually hear the 27 reasons why they now need 13 stitches and it had nothing to do with the lock slipping on that $4 beauty!!

Bugs me just as much if not more, but only at first. I generally find that such people don't mind hearing about higher quality options and some even go for them.
+1

I try to get them to appreciate quality and start up with a nice knife.

We all started some where, didn't we? We were all beginners once. :)

Truth. I had a POS rolling knife holder filled with POS knives (no-name hardware store knives that came in multi-packs, with the treasures of my collection being a pair of Winchester fixed blades) when I was fourteen. I lost interest for about a decade until I started actually needing a knife day to day. That's when I stepped out of my mall ninja level of knife ownership and appreciation.

I have a cousin that swears by his variety of Amazon MTechs, and I used to get pretty frustrated with his collection of knives being at all comparable with what I had at that same moment (the "my son loves knives too" statement hits home). Especially when he was convinced any of them would match up with any Spyderco/Kershaw I had to show. I've actually come to appreciate the fact that he appreciates knives at all, and would never knock him for his "low quality junkers". Even though I've tried to get him into something of more functional quality, and wish he shared the interests I have, I've come to value more that he even holds the interest in the first place. Although the frustration remains with incomparable comparisons are made, I would never risk turning his interest away from knives, no matter what they are.

The secret here is to gift him a Leek or something of reasonable quality. Maybe a Cold Steel AUS8 number while they're still discontinued and cheap.

Can't say the idea hasn't crossed my mind. Been trying to evaluate what he appreciates best in blade shape, material, etc. to give him something of similar look, that will prove more functional.

For the record I never poo poo there collections to them it's not worth arguing with them about how the 6 Canadian peso Home Depot special stacks up. I guess it's more the excitement of finding someone who might share this rare interest and then the dissapointment in seeing there "super dragon 6 blades wrist sword" lol

My problem is the fact that my brother buys a new 8$ tac force knife every few months ( that's how long it takes them to fall apart ) , because he doesn't want to mess up a nice knife ( he thinks that even my 20$ buck 482 is to nice of a knife )
I've tried to get him to realize that he's spent over 100$ on crap in the 2yrs of constant edc I've gotten out of my 20$ buck so far.
I have no problem with anyone collecting novelty knivesnIves though.
I have over 100 knives and most are tac force/ duck brand ...ect cheapos ( mostly from cutlery corner ) that aren't worth using, but are shaped like bullets ,guns ,spiders.. ect
They have plenty of novelty factor and that's it ( but I know what they are and don't buy them to use )

Just pull out your ZT and stab him in the leg. Once he feels that smooth satin finish of the supersteel, he'll get it.

"The advantage of the particle metallurgy steels available in higher end knives are incredible. Notice that your blood is not staining the blade, and even after going through layers and layers of flesh and connective tissue and finally hitting a bone, there are no chips or rolls in the edge or tip and it still shaves hair! Hey, will you calm down for a second? I'm trying to talk to you and you're being very rude."
