anyone els get frustrated when...?

While I appreciate that it reflects a degree of snobbery, I can't help but feel a little pigeonholed when someone equates my appreciation of knives to the sort of person who considers their flea market fantasy knife trash heap to be a "knife collection". Don't get me wrong - it does technically fit the description of a "knife collection", but I would argue it's more of a collection of art in the shape of knives as opposed to being a collection of cutting tools.

A Gil Hibben reproduction made out of pot metal is still a knife, but I would use many other terms that are much less positive before I came to use the term "knife" when describing such a thing. That just reflects my own perceptions of what a knife should be as opposed to mirroring some kind of universal truth about such things. A knife means different things to different people, and, as is true with driving and music, only YOU are right and everyone else is insane and/or stupid.

it isn't really anyone equating anything other than seeing a person who collects objects that are knives/blades of some sort and knowing you like knives/blades of some sort and introducing you. very few even know there is more than one type of steel. let alone brands or makes, quality, etc. i think you both are overthinking what has happened there. it's not an attack on your character or choices or knowledge or anything else. it's more just a hey i know someone who likes knives....nothing less or more.

No, I don't become frustrated about someone else's knives. IMO, there's far too many really important things I could be frustrated about.

I'm sure there are some people who would be frustrated that I don't wear expensive, fashionable clothes.

Never happened to me, honestly! Hell, I'd be happy to meet a fellow collector.

I don't think it is "snobbery" to acknowledge that some folks just have bad taste. We all live in the same society, have access to the same media, restaurants, stores. Yet some people consistently choose QVC swords, Wonder Bread and Coldplay.

It can't be helped.

^wonder bread is an upgrade to what i eat my sandwiches on.:)

i also like spyderco and zt knives. what does that say about my tastes?

Jeez dude, you are being a snob. Maybe they don't like the same stuff as you do and if they don't you label them as having bad taste. Define that!

The type of swords the OP mentions look bad from across the room, let alone in your hand. Why would anyone not be able to see the poor assembly, cheap materials and blurred stampings?

"Taste" is a tough one to define. You either have some measure of it, or you don't.

I like kizers, and karambits. if your collection doesn't mirror mine in value, and you have a different taste than me, your opinion is obviously invalid, and your collection is nothing but pot metal...

but if you've got some pot metal to smoke.....

No he's right. It's bad taste. The fact that it gives the person pleasure is cool but besides the point. It's still bad taste. I don't think he's a snob, just normal. :D

Well, the way I look at it is, no one is forced to talk knives with anyone.

If someone has a knife or a bunch of knives, and if I don't feel like talking knives, or if I have no interest in their knives, then I simply don't talk about knives.

If someone wants to show me a knife they have on them, and if they are a friend/family member, or if I'm in a friendly mood, I'll look at it. And even if I regard it as a piece of junk, I'll say "cool" or "nice". I prefer to avoid unnecessary criticism of others and their stuff. If they like it, if they're happy with it, more power to them.

Of course if someone asks me for my absolute honest opinion, I'll give it to them, with no sugar coating.

If someone wants me to check out their collection, whether or not I accept their invitation will depend on a variety of factors. And if I don't want to, I just say "No thanks", the choice is all mine. If I accept, and if it's a bunch of home shopping knives, my reaction will be based more on the person than on the knives. If the person is cool, then I'll be cool. If the person acts like a jerk with a superior attitude, then I won't be cool.

Now if someone tries to tell me that my knife is crap and that their knife is better, I won't be so friendly. I won't feel offended, and I won't waste my time trying to explain to them why they are wrong, I'll just ignore them, and/or walk away, or tell them to get lost.

And that's how I roll.

It doesn't bug me at all.
I'll gladly look at their terrible knives...heck, it's rather nostalgic, as I owned many terrible knives in years gone by. ;)

I might rather that they not give any to me, but I'll look at them all day long, especially if they buy pizza. :)

Not at all! Who is to say collecting visually aesthetically pleasing sword or blade is any less collectible than high quality functional tool blades! Im sure everyone has interests that they enjoy but arent very knowledgeable about or are lacking much info and experience to converse with a veteran of that subject of interest and wouldnt want to be thought of the way you implied you felt trying to talk to "that" person

Yeah, i see myself in that post. I don't actually care about other people's stuff and I will only talk about it to be polite. It's kinda funny because my boss is the type to brag about his stuff. Every time he does I just sit there and nod all the while thinking, "you're in debt so you can have this imagined victory." Funny and sad all in one go.

The only time this would bother me at all, is when that dude goes on to say what an idiot I am for paying $250 for a knife, when his will do the same thing for $10.
I see the same thing with pool cues.

That's when you carve slivers off his blade with yours. ;)

Although that sounds awesome and fun, using my blade like that would be like ALI picking a fight with a 12yo

When You're Ali at his prime though, it's a no risk fight. :D

Or......get his ass on the pool table with his Budweiser pool cue for a small wager or 2!!!

Joe

I'm really bad at pool though...
We could see whose knife cuts up his Budweiser cue better. :)
