If you look at the federal prison system, they rarely use clips on their knives, yet they carry them around , and use them effectively.

When pedaling my road bike, yes, I've clipped a knife in the waistband. I've done that in swim trunks, too, or when not wearing a belt but wearing lightweight britches.
