Anyone else disgusted with ebay prices?

OK, snap brim hats and sharkskin suits and Angie Dickenson sipping a martini... We're at the Sands hotel on the Vegas strip, back in the days when the outfit still ran the city. Tonight, his friends from the Rat Pack in attendence (Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis Jr, Dino Martin, Peter Lawford), I bring you the Chairman of the board...

New York, New Yorrrrkkkk! I wanna wake up in a city that never sleeps! To find I'm king of the hill.... top of the heap!!!!

So why? Why go that high on a Schrade? Well, it's a desirable model, the Frank Sinatra etch is cool, and... that's it. What BR Levine calls the 'cool' factor, what makes us spend just a bit more for what something might be 'worth' because its.. well.... cool. And just who in the heck was ever cooler than Frank?

'Scuse me, Angie needs another drink.

I'm gonna roll myself up in a big balllllll andd....... dieeeeeeee.....! dodo dodo, do do do do..... My.... My.........!

ps... thanks to Nelson Riddle and his orchestra

Orvet....I do not want to think of what college will cost by then if tuition rates continue the way they have!!

Has anyone ever thought that maybe our collection of knives may actually lose money? If you were to take into account the rate of inflation over a long period of time, 50 years for example, do you think your collection will see a profit? Will future generations be interested in collecting slipjoints? It seems the majority of younger collectors tend to collect tactical or other non-slipjoint knives. I didn't see very many collectors under 40 at the last NKCA show I went to.

Supply and demand......Will there be a demand for old style slipjoints? IMO, I don't think the demand will be there for recent factory made slipjoints to see any type of significant increase.

Philw, I know what you mean about tuition. 2 years ago I went back to college to finish a degree I had almost finished in the 1970's. It cost me over $12,000 for 20 credit hours, about $585/credit plus fees.
Hopefully Schrades will go up in value, if not I guess my grand kids will have to go to college the old fashioned way, work for it, or go in the military and invest in their education program, (not a bad way to go IMHO).

PS- I had the fun of collecting something I enjoy. :D

Dale,
Some time ago I ran across the receipts for my freshman year at Penn State, enrolled in Mech.Eng. The total cost of the first semester, including tuition and dormitory room and board, was $315.00. That was for 42 hours of classes/lab and 21 credits.
That equated to about 100 hours of wages for my Dad,who was a self-employed journeyman carpenter.
Now,if you want to send a kid to a no-name liberal arts college in this state,it takes about $18,000 after you obtain about $6,000 worth of "financial aid".

Ron,
$315.00? Were they still burning candles for light?

I have 2 in college and 1 just graduated and 1 more to go.
Can't buy any "NIB" knives for a long time. (content) :grumpy:

You have great girls, Larry, and it is wonderful that they all want a good education. However, I don't know that I could be content with not buying nice knives! ;)

Codgerhow many weddings to go?

I dont do Ebay anymore because i dont support anti-Americans! I use auctions That support America's freedoms! And Yes i buy and sell and the prices are much lower than ebay's on the gun auctions. I do know of course that sometimes you want something really bad and it can only be found on the liberalbay site and i have been guilty of this charge in the past but hopefully i will never have to support them again.

Larry,
No,actually the dorm I was in (Mckee) was a new brick ediface right on the corner across from Rec Hall and the football field(now moved). The food was decent too. For $50 less a semester, you could get a room in one of the old Army barracks buildings. Those were true barracks, while McKee was 2 students per room.
At that time you could take your shotgun and rifle to school and on Saturdays,I'd walk out thru the Penn State farms to the woods and hunt squirrel, grouse, and deer. We'd clean our game in my cousin's fraternity and cook it in their kitchen.
Can you imagine the flak you'd get now if a student carried a long gun 2 miles across campus.
I guess those were what could be called my "salad days".
At that time I had a Jean Case fixed blade and a Case carbon steel folder. When they went stainless,I switched to Schrades.
Speaking of eBay prices,I got two NIB 108OT's this week for $29.98,including shipping. The 2004 price list that Dale sent me shows a list price of $31.45 each.My daughter carries that model so maybe I can get her a lifetime supply.
As Codger says- buy what's not hot at the moment.

Compare the last retail suggested prices (2004) to what the mainline UH and OT knives are going for right now, and you'll see for yourself. Still bargains abound for about half of the two-year-old retail list price. For instance, check out the 140, 141, 142OT Safe-T-Grip knives. True, they aren't pretty, but they are excellent knives, good ergonomic handles, top notch blade designs, great steel, and can be had for around fifteen to twenty bucks. Last MSRP? $43.95 - $35.95. They make excellent users, and great gifts too.

Yes, the older, less common stuff is up (and even some of the common), but deals still come up on them too.

Codger is right about the safety grip knives, they wont win any beauty contests but they feel like your hand was designed to be wrapped around the handles of these workhorses! My favorite is the 140ot bowie bladed trailmaster. wasnt it called the trailmaster? anyway i paid $12.99 for it without the sheath from SMKN then i looked around and found a cheap pakistan knife and sheath combo which set me back $3.50 the Schrade fit perfectly and the pakistan crap was given to the first kid that saw it and thought it looked neat! anyway this knife is well worth the suggested retail and after getting my hands on one i wouldnt hesitate to pay retail for another one. I do think the leather sheath looks out of place on this one and would like to obtain a nylon sheath that was made for it. Do any of you guys have a sheath for this model you would be willing to bargain for?

140OT Trail Boss (5 3/4 fullered sabre clip blade)
141OT Outfitter (4 5/16 drop point blade)
142OT Guidemaster (4" clip blade)
143OT Blade Runner (4 5/16 drop point guthook blade)

As you can see, the sheaths are pretty interchangable. I see them on eBay occasionally for five or six bucks.

I have bought three of the Trail Boss' in addition to the one I got as a gift years ago. One mint for my "Safe-T-Grip" collection frame, one each for my son in law and my wife, both of whom would not leave my good user alone.

sdt11670... I got a very slightly used sheath for ya. Just email me your address. Find my email by clicking on my name and visiting my profile here.
No charge of course.

I'm thinking about boycotting e-bay, not because of the the prices, I can always choose to not buy something if I don't like the price, but because of thier selective enforcement of there policy regarding switchblade knives. Every good auto that I have taken an interest in has been canceled early while the old beat up dogs seem to stay around for ever. That bothers me ten times more than being outbid in the last ten seconds. I never had any use for e-bay prior to Schrade going out of business and when the day comes that I can't find a decent Schrade at a decent price I will be done with them.
On a lighter note, get out there and check out those K-marts. Four out of the last five stores I went to still had some Schrades left. Yesterday I picked up two 8OTs in the clampack for 19.99 each and last week got an 897UH on clearance for just $13.99 + tax. You have to look close, they are usually laying under a pile of that Outdoor chinacrap.
Thanks Rick

Upstream-
There are still some OTs around. A couple days ago I was in a Fred Meyer store (a West Coast chain owned now by Kroger) and found three 34OTs on clearance, for $8.86 each............You bet I did!!!!! :D :D :D
