Anyone else just stopped buying knives?

I unloaded a number I was’t using and found some models and makers here I really like. I will be getting more models from those makers.

The idea that steel is steel, and a cut is a cut may be true- however some cuts put smiles on my face and that is priceless to me.

That's not saying that I won't buy any knives in the near future, it's just that I have other things to occupy that mind space.
This point really resonates with me. When knives are top of mind and other hobbies are in a steady state, on the back burner, or whatever, I'm much more likely to buy a new knife. When another hobby rotates to the top slot for a while, I'm not thinking about knives nearly as much or as often.

I made a resolution on New Years Day to clear out every folder I hadn’t used in six months. I’m proud (and somewhat shocked) to say that I’ve sold 67 so far with just a few stragglers left. It took every ounce of commitment I had and, I have to admit, I’m still in shock that I’ve actually gone through with it.

Time to celebrate by buying some new fricken’ knives!!! 🤠

Over the last two months or so I have acquired 8 custom knives from the custom fixed blade forum on this site. I bought some really nice knives at great prices, but I am tapped out. So I have plenty using knives. But I'll hold out maybe for one more bargain perhaps. I love carrying fixed blades. I used to carry only folders.

Well, the knife landscape in 2011 when I first started accumulating blades is very different compared to the present. Back then I was wowed at how sharp knives out of the box were compared with, say, 10 to 20 before. And it was a real candy store of knives facilitated by online buying. Superior stainless steel allowed one to buy a whole cabinet of blades with minimal maintenance. But now, there are even more new choices. Also some models and steel combinations have come and gone. Those I liked are being phased out, while new ones present new learning curves I have to climb over.

So, do I stop buying knives? Yes for now. I increased my rotation rate for both EDC and actual use for different knives. Some I welcome as long-lost friends whose quality have proven consistent. Some turn out to be what I suspected when I bought them: really just a passing want.

Oh, I'll stay on the lookout for really good ones coming out. And with retirement looming close, I might have more time (and money) to feed this hobby.

So far this year I’ve sold 4, bought 1, and traded 2 for 2 straight across. At least that’s a downward trend…

I pretty much “stop” all the time, until the next one comes along. I’m very selective these days so it takes a lot to get me to bite, but a lot of things I’ve been looking for forever seemed to have popped up in the past year or two.

Couldn’t be happier with what I have now. I don’t see much catching my eye the rest of the year.
