Anyone else just stopped buying knives?

I've stopped buying "whatever" knives and now I have a few on order from a maker I like. But what I buy for me is very specific and I mostly buy now with my daughter in mind. She will have a couple good knives from the same guy to grow into and hopefully she'll grow up to have a good appreciation for fine cutlery. And stay away from guys with terrible choices in pocket knives 🤔. It may not be right but I have judged people by the condition of the $4 knife hanging out of their pocket. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against a $20 Kershaw. But if it's heavily neglected then yeah I judge.

I have pretty much stop buying knives. I don’t see much out there that makes me want to reach for my wallet. I have a couple of knives that I tend to rotate through with one getting the vast majority of pocket time.

I have a moratorium on buying that I have managed to stick to by focussing on my collection as it exists now, setting up new storage and display methods, and rotating through my collection to reacquaint myself with some forgotten favorites. It's worked!

I go through seasons.

I’m slowing down simply because I’ve figured out what I like and I’m waiting for new batches to drop. The things I started out with are what I’m giving away now when I pick up something new.

I went on a decades long buying spree with knives, watches and bass guitars/ amps, etc. I have all I’ll ever need even with two houses. A baker’s dozen of folders, kitchen knives galore and heavy duty/bushcraft knives. I’m fully retired anyway.

Although I admit I bought a Winkler Operator last month. And I added a second workhorse, a Wusthof 4582 10” Extra Wide. They’re out of production now.

Yes.

I decided NOT to buy any more knives just before Xmas in 2022 and haven't bought one since.

The plan was to try to sell off a large part of my 360+ knife collection instead, but the apparent current lack of demand to buy knives at any more than bottom of the barrel prices on the Exchange and the recent failed effort to sell a very desireable knife at what I considered a reasonable price discouraged me trying to sell any other knives.

So, at the moment, I'm just sitting on my collection.

Bottom of the barrel prices? Really? While I'm not privy to appopriate price points I'm always amazed and the never ending stream of high dollar folders that get snatched up and sold here every day.

I look at every listing of autos, folders and fixed blade knives offered for sale on the Exchange every day to keep tabs on what's going on there.

There has always been a price disparity and fickleness on the Exhange that sees certain high $ and sought after knives to sell quickly while other more common knives go unsold.

The majority of the knives in my collection are of the latter type and it's the ads for those types of knives that I have been watching, many of which go unsold unless the sellers are willing to offer them at a very low prices.

I don't need the money and I don't want to waste my time trying to sell my knives at low ball prices or to have them go unsold at because I'm unwilling to sell them for less than what I paid for them.

So, as I said, I'm just sitting on my collection and am not buying any more knives because I have no need to buy any more knives.

Well, as I know you to be an astute observer I trust your take on it :)

I've sold a few knives here but I did let them go for very good deals.
