Anyone else scared of carrying the nice knives they own?

The only knives I won't carry are the ones I intend on selling, The expensive ones I carry are treated with respect, not fear!

Will be in my hands tomorrow! Going straight into my pocket.

I just got my first hinderer on Monday and it hasn't left my pocket yet. Its the most I have ever spent on a single knife but I had no hesitation on carrying it to work all week.

PS. CM that blade looks SICK!!!!

$2200 of sickness!

When I'm setting aside money for a new outdoor purchase, I typically won't spend more than $200 on a knife, because once I pass that threshold I'll just save a bit longer and buy a gun instead.

I consider a $100 knife expensive, and I will use any of them if need be; but I usually EDC knives that are less expensive, because my experience is that the minute I pack one of the expensive knives I'll find myself in a situation where I need a tool but only have a knife that wasn't designed for what I'm about to use it for... prying, unscrewing, etc..

This is where carrying an additional multi-tool pays off, but I don't always do that, because I like to travel light some days.

When I go out hiking, hunting, fishing, or camping, though, I will pack a couple of the more expensive ones that are less likely to let me down when I really need them... think Aron Ralston and 127 Hours/Between A Rock And A Hard Place.

Sometimes, when I find a more expensive knife that I'd like to carry but also worry about losing, getting stolen, being discontinued, or damaging, I'll buy 2 of them if I find a good enough deal... I actually have 3 of some knives.

The only knives I don't carry are the ones I want to sell and the one I have prepped for when the shit hits the fan, i.e. an ESEE-5 (when I've saved up for a Busse, it will replace the ESEE as safe queen). Besides since two years, through local city laws, carrying any "sharp object" is illegal in almost every city here in The Netherlands aka Holland. So carrying an ESEE-5 in Amsterdam centre would be a little ridiculous to say the least. But despite the laws, I EDC a shitload of "sharp objects". Especially "nice" ones. I'm EDC'ing a Spyderco Military since 2008. Among them a discontinued Orange, C/F M390 and anodized blue Fluted Ti. I'm not a collector, I'm a user ;)

This one is my new carry knife.

Carrying this today:

It's so pretty that I'll feel a little guilty when I ding it up somehow, but it's getting used all the same.

Three words that'll cause most to reconsider their carrying options: civil forfeiture laws.

My state isn't so bad for that. My criminal record is 3 pages long and I've never had AF. I've been arrested with legal and illegal knives and the legal ones were always returned.

I am not scared, but I am concerned about loss of a knife I can not replace or have a connection to. I have an M2 710 Benchmade that I have just never used as I bought it as a edc for self defense. I carry a Swiss Army as a sacrificial tool with any other knife I may own as my SD carry. What I have done is what others have already stated, I buy a second knife, in this case, a D2 710 that I can uses and enjoy, but I still do not want to mark up my M2. I also have a concern of having one of them grow legs and move on. This said, I do not own a knife that costs more than $300.00 so in most circles I do not own an expensive knife. As a side note, I have five watches that run anywhere from $2,500.00 to $9,000.00 and never give a second thought to wearing one of them. I guess it all depends on what you consider important to you. Just my .02.

No. I carry my custom 1911s and knives daily. Have all my life. If I'm going to defend me and mine I want the best. They are my tangible insurance policies. I don't care what they look like as long as they perform.

My friend is a hunter who has nice rifles and optics. Whenever he gets something nice in he asks his brother to scratch his initials in it with his keys. After this, he is not worried about marring the protective finish of what for him is a tool.

Me, I don't need anything so drastic. My knives are by comparison very cheap (max about 150 dollars) but I don't have this problem. If I can not use a tool as a tool my things own me and I sell them. Thus, I was happy when my Breitling got its first nick, like my friends scratches it made sure that my watch (a toll) would not own me.

I leave my nicer knives at home, and carry a beater, but seeing you all talking about using the expensive ones makes me question my reasoning for not doing so.. Thanks guys :torn:
