Anyone else scared of carrying the nice knives they own?

I have two knife drawers. One with the ones I carry, and one with knives that are either too old and abused to carry and are kept for sentimental values. Everything else gets sold/traded.

I have no qualms about carrying my knives. If I'm going to a bad part of town, I carry something old and beat up. If I'm going to work, doesn't matter what I carry.

Just my SOG Pentagon Elite 1. Mine is absolutely positively immaculate and it's the one knife I own that I simply can't bring myself to put user marks on. A used look just doesn't suit that blade imo.

nope, not at all.
what's the worst thing that could happen? I could lose or damage it.
But that won't change my life and it's only money :-)

Not at all unless I buy solely for investment, which I generally do not do. To me, I am not getting my money's worth otherwise. Use of a leather belt sheath or William Henry style pocket inner clip sheath helps preserve the cosmetic finish greatly. Keys love to ruin even durable finishes. I don't mind carrying knives that were discontinued even a decade+ ago that if destroyed would be almost impossible to replace.

Now would you carry a knife and use it that is not in production that you spent $200 on that you may not be able to get again? Like a sprint or discontinued knife.

No offense to some of you guys.... but all those "used and carried" knives I see pictured look mighty pristine. ;)

I'll admit even my "hardest use" knives look pretty pristine. I work as an engineer, the "hardest use" I ever have is cutting a little rope or maybe a box or two. My work may not stack up to some of you manly men, but I'm sure not scared to use the knives ;)

Absolutely. If the limited or discontinued one has a nicer steel, better looks, nicer handle, higher fit-finish, etc., I see that as more reason to carry and use it. One can only enjoy a knife so much if they aren't using it IMO.

USE THEM.....I work hard for the knives I buy and decide to keep forever. I'm going to use them. My kids will never appreciate them as much as I. Lube them, clean them, sharpen them, and USE THEM!! They are made out of Steel, Titanium, Carbon Fiber, etc al...they are made to be used. Just like a sports car is made to be driven fast and hard and not put in a glass case!

I already ate the steak so had to use the apple.

Man, is losing knives a common thing? Especially for knife nuts. I love my knives, from the cheapos to my most expensive so I've developed a subconscious pocket check for my knife as well as wallet and phone. Interestingly I would be just as angry to lose any of them. While my nicer ones may be worth more cash my cheapos are from when I couldn't afford/didn't know good knives. They have been with me for a long time and I wouldn't be able to find again if I tried. Lots of sentimental value, like a childhood teddybear. Now that being said I only own production knives. If I had a $1000 collectable maybe I'd think differently.

Same. "Used and carried" doesn't apply if they're used to inspire awe in their display, and carried about in a secure case.

Well I'm a city boy and take pretty good care of my knives. Unfortunately I don't get to whittle fuzz sticks and skin animals and all that cool stuff. Its a small condolence that most of my knives get to look great for a very long time. I do refuse to use them to open bottles or things that I know will scratch them up. I got beaters for that.

I sold my safe queens, they were Cooper's, and Cooper-Samson's. I own no safe queens now, and can not see any in my future. What I own I carry. Nothing over $200.00 retail.

I don't worry so much about LOSING my higher end knives during carry, but I DO try to make sure they stay nice in outward appearance.

Best thing I've discovered, some time back, is a quality slipcase. Not only do they make a knife more comfortable to carry and less obvious in profile in your pocket, they protect it from the number one killer of knives cosmetically--getting beat up by keys or other things in the same pant pocket. And you can still use a clip if you prefer--just clip it to the slipcase which then allows the clip to still be attached to your pocket in traditonal carry.

Various KSF slipcovers have been highly satisfactory for me. I only had to purchase a few to have one to fit every knife I own.

Of course, if you're of the knife-fighter mentality it would be a no-no because it would cost an extra second in deployment to be slipcased. :highly_amused:

Lol. That's funny.

To answer the OP...

I've never been one to collect or buy things to simply look at and appreciate, but I understand those that do. Everything I own was purchased to be used, even if the purchase was unnecessary, such as how many knives I have that all accomplish the same thing. I appreciate using mine, still a form of collecting I suppose, just a different approach.
