I am definitely suspicious of armchair mettalurgists spouting their opinions all over the internet. Particularly when most of the knives I see on BF (and IG, FB, Reddit, etc.) don't have a single scratch on the clip let alone any sign of actual use. How would  they know?

They sure do take pretty pictures though, don't they?

Regarding Magnacut being expensive, yes, some Magnacut knives seem excessively expensive. But you can easily find good Magnacut knives in stock for $150 or less, including Bestech, Hogue, Kershaw, and MKM, at dealers who support BF.

A Magnacut Kershaw Blur can be had for less than $130.00 and the Hogue Deka in Magnacut is still around $124.99. Neither is "cheap," but considering the amount most of us have probably spent on other folders I would not call them cost-prohibitive either.

For my $0.02, I like Magnacut quite a bit. It's not the bestest-greatest-steel-ever but it's certainly an improvement and I've had great experiences with the aforementioned folders. I look forward to more in the future.

Fyi, this one is extremely easy to touch up.

The search for budget knives doesn’t seem to coincide with what is most likely the most premium blade steel available right now. Maybe I’m crazy, but that expectation doesn’t line up. I only have one knife with Magnacut right now, but it’s seen its fair share of HARD USE TASKS like cutting apples and a few cardboard beer boxes… hasn’t needed a full edge overhaul yet!

I’m cool with MagnaCut. It’s on almost every knife now because that’s what’s gonna sell. I’m sure it’ll level off soon enough. I’m happy with any decent stainless steel for my EDC’s. S90V , MagnaCut , S30V , M390 and Swiss Stainless are what I carry most at the moment.

I did not know Kershaw was making a MagnaCut Blur now! A S30V Blur was my first ‘nice’ folder, so it will always have a special place. But now I think I must have one of these, too. I think I hear the blue with black inserts calling me.

The Blur is my Dad's favorite folder, I've bought him 2 over the years but never got around to getting one for myself. Finding one in MC just pushed me over the edge. It's the first linerlock I've carried since I was a kid.

I like it a lot. And I guess I don't really see companies asking for a huge premium for it. I'm honestly more and more a fan of balanced steels in my blades, since I'm past hunting for the latest and greatest, so the current trend of Magnacut on more premium blades and 14c28n and Nitro-V on the budget side is absolutely perfect for me.

MC knife in video has U-shape jimping, not square. U is similar to C notched (and close to Un-notched), whereas square is similar to V notched with small bending radius.

Still gonna be a stress riser, particularly if it's in a HAZ.

IME as a welder, pretty much any discontinuity (including the "stack of dimes" ripples that so many people think are so great in TIG welds) can turn into a stress riser, causing strain to concentrate in one spot, leading to fatigue and eventual cracking/failure.

I have one magnacut knife (manix 2) and so far love everything about it. I have not tested its corrosion resistance yet, but the fishing season I approaching.

I actually wish there was more of it. As much as I love k390, I wish magnacut made its way to Seki city already.

Well, MagnaCut will be able to take advantage of higher strength at the edge to support lower angles with better resistance to deformation. Vanax will have a higher total carbonitride volume however the hardness HRC is limited. Vanax will have a higher volume of softer phase retained austenite in the matrix even with cryogenic processing which is detrimental to edge strength and apexing.

Lower edge angles in general will cut longer at a trade off with raw durability.

MagnaCut has fine carbonitrides at a lower volume and good toughness and working hardness range.

All of those features can be more advantageous for lower edge angles.

We can model this by graphing data from the Predicative CATRA formula below.

TCC (mm) = -157 + 15.8*Hardness (Rc) – 17.8*EdgeAngle(°) + 5.0*Fe3C(%) + 11.2*CrC(%) + 14.6*CrVC(%) + 26.2*MC(%) + 9.5*M6C(%) + 20.9*MN(%) + 19.4*CrN(%) [1]

As Roman Landes has said "geometry cuts"

What is lacking is a proper understanding of the types of different tasks these different steels are for
