anyone else tired of s30v?

I'll go into further detail of my feelings of S30v. I've owned several knives in it, and it has been inconsistent. Benchmade 162--Rolls easily, does not maintain an edge at all. Strider SnG--Pretty good. ZT0350TS--blah. Spyderco Nilakka--Subpar so far. Spyderco PM2--ok, nothing special.

Its ok, but I would not spend the extra money to upgrade to it from another steel, such as Kershaw's Blur. The Sandvik 14C28N is a good steel, and S30v is just not enough of an upgrade to warrant the cost IMO.

If you are getting different results in these S30V blades its most likely in the heat Treatment.

I'm personally de-evolving when it comes to blade steels. Went from S30V on Sebenza's to D2 on BM's and A2 on fixed blades. And FWIW, I definitely need to get laid.

Prof.

Honestly, I'd buy a grip in 1095.
But I'm not getting one in s30v.

Honestly I had always thought S30V was going to be great till I got a knife in it back when it was really starting to be used on higher end factory knives and have not like it since. I never cared much for ATS34 when it was the darling steel either. =)

S30V is still my second favorite, with m390 taking the lead. I cant understand why you would get tired of it.... Its one of the best all around mid level steels available.
Im also not sure why many people find its corrosion resistance to be only "acceptable". Its one of the most corrosion resistant steels I have ever tried. Hell, Ive gotten rust spots on my m390 before, but never my S30v. Doesnt make sense, but its true. I have literally left my S30V knives in water, tomato juice, orange juice, etc and no rust (by this I mean I wasnt able to clean them for a while because i was cooking, not that i clinically tested for corrosion resistance)
Egde retention is amazing with the right geometry (one of the best i have ever seen was a Sage 2 with a 30 degree inclusive bevel and a 40 degree micro bevel. I saw a guy test his with this geometry and It was like it could never get dull!)
Also, with the right geometry (the one above would work), chipping is an absolute non-issue

Maybe a little tired when you consider that Elmax, M390, and CTS-204P are general upgrades. But then again, I suppose it's continued use is understandable given that the big 3 probably still have about a hundred tons of the stuff left over.

My only real gripe with S30V is the somewhat low hardness it's usually run at and the lack of ability to hold a razor edge. Both of which are addressed by the 3rd gen stuff.

BTW, IMHO the S30V used by Buck and HT by Paul Bos is maybe the pinnacle presentation of that steel in a consumer level knife. I have several and they really nailed it.

Again, JMO. YMMV.

I send all of my blades in all of the Air hardening & Tool steels to Paul Bos HTing at Buck knives including the offensive & Boring S30V

I am finding through usage that one thing I am really liking about both ELMAX and M390 is that they hold that they hold that super razor edge for a really long time rather than going from that super sharp edge to that very sharp but not super sharp edge quickly with the initial usage. While perhaps subtle in terms of real-world implications, I like it nonetheless.

Is he the guy that produced the Buck 271's in CPM-154? ...because that knife's steel is friggin awesome!

I don't use or test my knives often enough for hard enough to be able to make informed opinions about X being better than Y.
Bot for the sake of seeing some variety, yes I would like to see less s30v and more... anything else.

Paul Bos Hting is inside Buck knives in their Idaho plant. Its a division of Buck, theyHeat treat all of the steels for buck and many custom makers as well.

S30v is good stuff. Spyderco and benchmade plus all of the custom guys have the heat treat down right and for most knives that come in that steel you're getting a great deal. Now I love to try and use all sorts of different steels, right now the elmax para 2 and manix 2 in s110v have kicked out everything else out of my pocket for now(I have a cruwear manix on the way :D so im sure it will get some good pocket time) but s30v suites me just fine. I'll need to buy more of it actually since I sold of my last 2 knives in it to fund some rare purchases, thats another great thing about it, you can always find s30v. So no, im not at all tired of it, how can you tire of a steel? Unless its your one and only knife then id say, yeah go buy something else.

I'm tired of knifes and super steel discussion. It's so unimportant and it bores me...
