Anyone else tired of the excessive flipper craze?

And that's part of the problem with any thread like this, it's hard to make broad statements. I DO like having a guard or something similar and some flippers offer that while others don't. That's one of the reasons I won't let a flipper stop me from buying a knife as with their popularity has come a huge amount of variety. And, as I said, they are fun, and fun is good. :D

Fun is good. :)

There are a lot of terrible designs with flippers out there, and that might contribute to some people disliking them too.
Of course, there are a lot of terrible knife designs out there in general, and if I let them dictate what I would buy as a rule, I wouldn't be able to buy knives that had steel, edges, a point, or a handle. :D

Then why did you buy it? I know because it's awesome!

Because once opened its and awesome knife. It's very solid, good size, good blade shape and steel. It's a great tool. I just wish I could open it with two hands or a thumb stud. The detent is so strong to make it flip well.

I like ANY knife that has a way to open it. Period. It gives me the ability to change knives for what I'm doing, or what I think will be the most useful to me.

As far as " inertial flipping " methods go , depending on the state/ country, that isn't an option. I know that if you're going into Canada as a trucker , and you have a knife , they'll try it to see if they can " inertial open " it. If they can..they'll confiscate it and may charge you. A simple lockback they'll just give it back.

Sorry if I am not seeing the obvious but why not just open a flipper using both hands? I have a few and i can open them without using the flipper?

Fads come and go. When the market is over saturated with flippers maybe people will stop buying them. A pet peeve of mine is pocket clips. I'm tired of seeing knives with more holes than Swiss cheese. Tip up, tip down, right, left.........
Jeeze.

My one and only flipper is at ZT 0808. It was also my first flipper. I enjoy the knife and have used it as my main EDC for almost a year now and have really come to appreciate the ease of opening.
i don't happen to agree with you...in fact, up until 6 months ago, i was strictly a liner lock thumb stud folder guy. then, i 'discovered' flippers. since then, i've gone on a "buying tear", picking up quite a few, some on bf's...i find them ALOT of fun to 'flip', love the concept, and strongly disagree with your point-of-view...each to his/her own...jzs

There are still a plethora of non flipper options out there, from most every major (and minor) manufacturer out there, so I'm not sure what the op feels he's "missing out" on... Don't like flippers? That's fine, don't buy 'em, but the only thing being missed out on is knives with flippers, so I don't get it??? So they don't make a zero tolerance catered to you; you still have Traditionals, Benchmade's, Buck's, CRKT's, Spyderco's, Kershaw's (Blur and Thistle are the only two off hand that come to mind), Sebenza's, and thousands more of flipperless knives available to choose from, so what's the problem?

well I hate all knives period....there, I said it....lol

That is why I am here....to learn to love knives...j\k

I really like all knives, but have a problem with lock backs like cold steels. I have to have a one handed operating knife...just easier when you in a bind

First world problems...
Most definitely.

Exactly like the entire hobby of collecting high dollar knives and obsessing about nitpicks on an internet forum. I have no delusions as to why I joined, and I pity anyone here who does.

Not aware of any Amazon jungle aborigines posting about the best synthetic copper laced lube for their Sebenzas . . .

I'm not tired of flippers but I do feel there isn't much innovation anymore. Then I saw GTC's Airborne. Awesome knife but the price just ruins it.

Flippers are great. I'm not tired of the craze at all.

You know what I hate? Car door handles that are lipped at the bottom that you have to pull up to open. I think all car doors should have the old school buttons for your thumb to push, and those new fangled doors are just a fad that will go away eventually. I mean, the thumb button opened the door for my dad and his dad and me, why change it? Innovation be dam*ed, I see those new door styles and get all bent out of sorts!

The sarcasm is woven really deep above, if you're not paying attention you'll surely miss it [emoji51]

I don't mind flippers, or if anybody else likes them, I just don't see advantages to them for me.
I currently own several flippers but carry only one- a ZT 0561. I understand that these have been produced with various amounts of detent, mine has a lot. I have not been able to open it using my thumb on the thumb stud, but if I pull hard on the flipper eventually I overcome the detent and the thing opens pretty fast.

the thumbstud on 0561 is not for openning the knife. It is to stop the blade when it is opened.

Zt as an example- I don't mind the flipper because it is a good finger guard when the knife is open. And that doesn't earn many points because the handle could achieve that if designed differently. What drives me crazy about my 0562 is it can not be opened any other way except for the flipper.

Or pinch the blade and open it. It can be done, believe me, I just did it.

There is something to be said about multiple deployment options, in an emergency it may be difficult to open one way but, doable another. Ernest Emerson talks in length about this.

I like flippers. They are fun. If some sheeple is scared of my flipper, I don't care.

As to the scaring of Sheeple, while I personally won't go so far as to deliberately draw their attention to my blade, I certainly won't go out of my way to coddle their skittish ignorance either. If I want to use my tool I damn well will, after having opened it in whatever given way I fancy in said moment.

As to the dislike of flippers (the mechanism, not the users, which apparently must be clarified), I knew I was in the minority, but I have now discovered just how unique I am in this opinion. Seriously, I think there were only like two or maybe three people total who agreed. Curiosity satisfied.

The thread has perfectly served its purpose. Thank you.

Jamesh, I'm wondering with Chris Reeve and others not even offering flippers why it is that you think it's so hard to find non-flipper knives?

I never said I couldn't find knives WITHOUT flippers, simply that certain awesome knives I really want are only made WITH them.

Thx.

In the OP you said:
Again, to each their own. But this isn't a "That's why they make different flavors" rant. This is an "I'm allergic to peanuts but all they sell are Reese's" rant. Lol.
How else do you expect your readers to interpret that?
