Anyone else want to see more made in the H-1 Steel? Or just me..

I have the Pacific, Spyderhawk, Tasman salt, dragonfly salt and ladybug salt. I'm hoping for another run of Aqua Salt too!

I have a dragonfly in h1 and so far the steel has performed extremely well with edge retention after a considerable amount of use. So I would definitely like to see it used more. I also remember watching a video of Ed Schempp talking about H1 steel and how its a great steel for edge retention because of the fact that it bends you can strop the blade edge straight and not remove precious blade material, therefore prolonging the life of your blades. So it does have other great advantages other than being rust proof.

Here's a link to the video of Ed Schempp talking about H1 steel for anyone interested.

I'd like to see another Schempp knife in H1. Ideally something akin to a folding Rock Salt - 3.75" negative blade angle, ergonomic salt. Like a Barong sized version of the Khukuri, but with more cutting edge and in H1.

So glad to see so many people love the H-1s! I am still sad I can't post pictures yet on the forum...soon though! I would love to see a Police in H-1 for some strange reason :)

I have an Aqua Salt in full serrated, and it's an amazingly balanced and perfectly weighted blade. I was considering a Street Beat at the time, and found this one for a similar price so I jumped on it. The sheath is perfectly executed as well. I don't use this baby as much as I should, but I say that about most of my fixed blades, being a city-boy.

I'm down with H1, I just wish the current offerings had the bi-directional texture. Far prefer it over the volcano grip, and it's prevented me from picking up some of the current folding Salt offerings. I understand that I don't NEED full-on rustproofyness, and that with only a little care VG-10 is virtually the same in that department, but it does give me a warm and fuzzy feeling, which is why I carry knives in the first place.

The thing I really like about H1 is how damn easy it is to sharpen and maintain....I can get an edge on H1 as fast as any of my high carbon steels, and it almost feels the same when sharpening. Unlike ZDP-189, which can be a bitch to bring back.

i want a plain edge DIVE knife in H1!! i know they had the Caspian salt and plain edge Auqa salt. i don't know why they discontinued them. something with a sharp and pointy tip to brain fish when diving. and with a plain edge. around 4 to 5 inches.

found this quote form sal on the spyderco forums :(:( i would think the market would be amazing for the boating and water industry.

Quote form Sal

"You can always put in a request and I rarely say "never". But....the market wouldn't support the model at its cost. We closed them out at a loss so investing in another run, which is expensive, is not at this time a good path. We were also informed that the cost of H1 will be going up which reduces chances. I would suggest that if yo want one, you snag one while they're still around. I don't think the price is likely to go down. It's an exceptional model for the salt water environment, but the market at the price is/was too small."

sal

I can't believe the Market is small for them! Do Water Industry people just NOT know about this steel? It would seem like they'd be popular on everything from dive boats, do fishing vessels. Shesh!!

H-1 Mule?

I know it's been requested before and it would be a bit different from other Mules because of the hollow grind (they are only made with hollow grinds, right?) but I'd buy a couple for sure. The Mule is a great design and size for me and if I'd never, EVER have to worry about corrosion, I'd be happy as a clam.

We have no problem building H1 models. We have all of the tooling. What we run into;

"I would like to see an H1 model in XYZ".
"Oh, why are they so expensive"?

Sal, any hints as to whether there's anything new in the works in the salt lineup?

We have a few concepts we're considering. The larger, tougher, pointier folder, probably in G-10, The ARK is in motion. I'd like to consider another fixed blade like the models made earlier, but am still in doubt over the sales due to price.

sal

Thanks for the info. Though I'd love to see both, I would agree that a large tough h1 folder would probably create a lot more sales than another fixed blade.

I would love to see a fillet knife in H1.

I think spydercos FRN and H1 would make an awesome folding fillet knife! even a fixed blade version would be cool but a folder would be my first choice.

Sal,
Thank you so much for chiming in, I feel honored that you did. I would love to see another Fixed Blade besides the Enuff and the Jumpmaster, but will be patient. I love my Caspain more than words, and it once saved my life in California while diving. I think it you could figure out how to market more aggresively in the Scuba World you would have no problem moving any type of diving fixed blade, especially something that could attach to a BC (so small fixed blade). I would also like to second what has been mentioned earlier and call for a Filet Knife, I think that would send sales over the moon!! Price obviously is a sticking point for a lot of people, but professionals pay for quality.
Again, thank you for responding, I love all my Spydercos and am honored to have you involved in my thread.
Cheers,
-Wilde

Fwiw, they used to make the catcherman, which was essentially a folding filet knife, (and a great design IMO) but it was discontinued due to poor sales. I wish that it had sold better and was still in production because I would love to own one!

I get spydercos position on this though. If you are going at full capacity trying to keep up on certain models that have huge demand, it's probably hard to sacrifice resources to make models that historically have not sold very well. I agree with wildenout about a dive/boat/water knife doing well if they did more target specific marketing but again, that puts them in the position of spending more money to open up a dubious market segment when they are already at full capacity. Im not saying those things shouldn't or won't happen, but I'm thinking they aren't likely to happen until they catch up with production on the models that are selling like hotcakes. I'm not trying to speak for spyderco, just offering my opinion and best guess here. :)
