Anyone else want to see more made in the H-1 Steel? Or just me..

The steel is no higher than other boutique blade steels but processing costs are high.

A mule in H1 would be cool or a similar design to the caspian salt with a more aggressive and pointy tip ( for stabbing ) and a tuff folder maybe like the paramilitary 2 in H1 with all salt water resistant hardware as well would be cool for braining fish while free diving. It wouldn't replace a nice fixed blade dive knife. but it would do its job at braining fish when free diving.

Right now my reground se PAC salt is my designated "brainer". I kayak fish more than freedive, but I get some nice size fish occasionally doing both. I usually don't carry a bat so anything over 20 lbs usually gets 4" of steel in the noggin before riding in the kayak with me. I poked this guy a FEW times before pulling him onto my lap. ;).

Another one my buddy got freediving a couple of months ago...

I would like to see a Cricket in SE H1, with the handle in H1 or Titanium....(not sure if that would work because how thin the Cricket is.) Maybe the flat, non locking side in orange G10.

If this could exist, I'd buy one in a second.

I wouldn't mind seeing more H1 options at all...especially on knives that are most likely to see marine usage. It's just incredible how harsh saltwater is even on stainless steels that have very good corrosion resistance, and how saltwater can penetrate into the pivot, hardware screws, inner bit of the clip and start corroding the metal. H1 seems to really be the gold standard in terms of the solution to this age-old problem.

I've not used H1 on a fixed blade so I cannot speak to it, but as a serrated edge on the folder I can and really like it. Some people I know dislike it due to how easily it scratches, but that's never really bothered me given I like scratches more than corrosion.

Whatever they do decide to do in H1, hopefully the trend of using components that can match H1 in terms of corrosion resistance/marine suitability will continue (titanium clips/hardware/liners/etc.) Some G10 or micarta options would be nice, as well as larger lanyard holes and possibly the ability for the knife to float on water or one of the foam attachments that temporarily make a folder a fixed blade with a bigger grip and gives the knife buoyancy. A high-viz color in a green or orange would give nice visibility and not show dirt quite as much as yellow.

Also given H1 is pretty prone to scratching, how about using that to a cosmetic advantage for a heavily stonewashed or tumbled finish which will hide almost all markings, or possibly even a true DLC coating?

Am I correct that raw H1 can't be exported so the knife would have to be assembled in Japan? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

  • Something like the Assist that can scissor cut rope
  • Something with a 3" or so plain edge with a choil that lets you choke up on the blade for fine cuts... maybe a H1 Stretch would cover this
  • Updated Pacific, Salt and Tasman using the 4th gen Endura and Delica handles
  • Waved Matriarch, because it would just be cool
  • Karahawk (with FRN or G10) - I can imagine situations on a boat or working with line where the ability to retain the blade while using a couple fingers and thumb for other tasks would be great

I want a manix 2 lightweight with H-1. I have the see through blue so maybe yellow or orange for the H-1 version. Treated parts and it's a done deal  I'll buy 10 and use them forever.

Well, since I stumbled onto an H1 wishlist, here's mine:

1. Spyderco Aqua - either the original or the new one if the one rumor I heard is true and Mr. Glesser is go to re-release it.
2. A Spyderco filet knife in H1
3. More fixed blade Spyderco models in H1
4. A G10 version of any and all Spyderco folders with full liners like the Manix 2 or Native 5 (makes adding custom scales very easy)
5. More models with white frn since white is the obvious color for most knives designed for marine use. And white can be dyed just about any color.

I've got my creidt card in my hand. Let me know when they are available. :D

Hey Ronnie, yep, I agree with most of your ideas here. Regarding g10, I believe there is a new larger Salt folder on the design table. There was some talk of it being made with linerless g10 handles. We will see. The only point I would disagree on is the H1 filet knife. Plain edge h1 doesn't have near the edge retention I would want for a filet knife and corrosion resistance is just not an issue for me in a filet knife. Certainly not enough to sacrifice that much in edge retention. I don't know, it might sell ok, but even though I am one of the biggest h1 fans around I would choose most any other steel for that type of knife. Probably one of the high wear resistance stainless steels that held a good toothy edge. Actually I would be happy with something like s30v. Good balance between wear resistance and ease of sharpening for me.

Surfingringo,

You are correct on the H1 in PE. I forgot about the work hardening properties of H1 and I got a little excited about all the talk I've seen on Spyderco making some more models in H1, and I even read there is a possible re-release of the Aqua Salt (just a rumor but I've been looking for one for a long time). I did see Sal post here a couple pages back so I know he's watching and I also know he has a reputation for listening to his customers. I live down here in Texas about 90 miles from the Gulf Coast. All things that are bad for blade steel are in high quantities down here. Humidity and sweat to name a few. H1 is my best friend when it comes to working knives out in the woods during the 100* summers or in the salt water fishing. I can spot rust S30V in a pocket in one day while working on the deer lease out in the heat, but a filet knife in S30V would be very nice. I guess I'm the second biggest fan of H1. :D
G.Sakai makes quite a few models in H1 over in Seki City and IIRC, they build for other companies. I have one of their fixed balde Sebi Kinifes in H1 but it's not near the quality of Spyderco.

I'm still waiting for an H-1 military. That would settle everything. I also live right on the gulf coast (Corpus Christi) and when I go fishing I swap out whatever my EDC is and clip on a Pacific Salt. I love the knife I just wish it were more pointy for regular EDC stuff.
