Anyone else want to see the ZT0500 MUDD brought back?

I cannot get this knife anywhere but always wanted it. I think Thomas is still around here somewhere. It's really the only ZT knife that interests me a lot (not a dis on ZT, just not much for hardcore combat knives personally).

Just seeing if it's only me.

It's not just you. I've been looking at them for quite a while - it used to be the only ZT folder with no recurve, which right away was a reason to like it. I don't really know why I didn't end up buying one... it just seemed like a lot of money to spend on a knife I wouldn't really be able to carry that often (I don't mind beefy folders but that thing is a TANK - great for a work knife, but not for an EDC).

I talked to ZT about why the MUDD was discontinued. They said it was because the manufacturing failure rate was high. The tolerances had to be extremely high to work with the gaskets. It was cancelled for manufacturing economics.

It is worth the money. Very practical, easy operating knife for one so massive. The clip curves out from the butt of the knife, so that's where I attached a lanyard. Too hard to draw without it.

I got lucky on the aftermarket.

Interesting note on the manufacturing issues. Makes sense.

I've never even seen one in person and it doesn't look like I'll get the chance.

Ah. Some people don't like the bulk, and some don't like the G-10 overlays, which are very coarse.
I think everybody likes the action of the mechanism, though, and the blade is a basic utilitarian style.

It just looks almost perfect for me. I love the hawk-lock and the blade shape. And the industrial design. Man, I wish I hadn't been so busy in school. If I had known they were being discontinued, I'd have jumped on one.

i'd like a second 0500 MUDD, the only sealed pivot knife I know of

the 0551 is on preorder, one for me!

As to Maxx: I'm pretty sure the CRK Umnumzaan uses the sealed pivot design from G&GH. Of course, it's a bit more expensive.

Thanks for the tip knivesandguns. It is a beautiful knife. But I just sort of felt a special connection with the MUDD...it's so unique. I'll keep an eye out for a custom since G&GH customs are very affordable. Maybe in the future (hopefully not too late again) I'll take a good hard look at the ZT0550, but at the moment, I'm not looking for another framelock.

As per BladeHQ, the item is listed as out of stock, but if you were in the store and saw it, give me a heads up and I'll give them a call Monday.

As a substitute, I've ordered another RAM, which should arrive tomorrow or Tuesday. Technically speaking, it's probably the better knife of the two, but I really wanted to try something new. I wonder how hard it is to locate an XT these days.

The 0500 Mudd needs to be brought back that is a helluva knife, in the same way the Rick James liked cocaine.

I don't believe the unumzaan has a sealed pivot.

It doesn't.

The Mudd's an interesting knife, that's for sure. I wish it was a little smaller (The RAM's not really a smaller version of it). Another problem with the Mudd was that it could develop some blade-play & even trips back to the factory didn't fix it (Not just mine, either).

It is an excellent folder for someone that needs something to excel in extreme crud environment. The rough G-10 was a plus, IMHO, as I think the knife was designed for extreme environments & grippiness is of prime importance, I would think.

For someone looking for a ZT Mudd, I don't think the new 0550/0551 is really a replacement for it. They're different knives.

However, the 0550 does look promising & I like that it's not overly big.

Yeah, the Mudd was sort of different than all other ZTs. It's just a straight up hard use knife, where almost all (or all?) of the ZTs are combat knives.

Sorry about the umnumzaan. Looks a lot like the MUDD's pivot and I know CRK collaborated with the Hawks on it.

Well, I gave up on trying to find the MUDD and just picked up a Tyrade classic at a gun show today, and my RAM should be in tomorrow, so I guess I'm good for a few months.

I love the ZT0500. Artfully Martial, shoot me an email and I'll give you the name of a dealer that has a few left.

i love that mudd am sorry i sold mine ! great blade , hey cutter can i also be in on that info ,,? thanks ,,vic

Its excellent folder. I got one in my hike back's emergency pouch with compass, storm matchest, and other stuff I could use in emergency. I admit, I did consider selling it couple of times in favor for fixed blades... but I always though I'd regret if I'd sell it, though recently it has seen far less action that I would have hoped.

Lol that sucks, I actually went out and bought a Ti Tyrade in lieu of the 0500. But maybe I'll just pick up both anyway. My Kershaw collection is overtaking my Spyderco and Benchmade collections by a pretty substantial amount now. My 2nd RAM should be in today. I'll PM you when I get out of class.

I think that's exactly what the MUDD is designed for and that's really why it has a special appeal to me over the other (excellent) ZT offerings--it's not trying to be a combat knife, it's trying to be a survival folder and succeeding.
