It does not specifically say "Water Buffalo", which is what I admire this week...

Anyone have any comments, confirmations, flames, etc???

I can't say for certain that these aren't water buffalo...but I know there are mastodon and mammoth scaled knives being sold; it wouldn't surprise me if there were also American Buffalo scaled knives available somewhere...maybe SMKW...

After all, why put an American Buffalo inlay on an Asian water buffalo scale???

You have to click on "Back Order Item". Says 4 - 6 weeks delivery. They took my order.

Maybe Joe Houser can answer the scale material question. My guess is smooth Asian Water Buffalo as that's what is offered in the Custom shop.

I did get an order in this time:) , Thanks Jim:thumbup: , The young lady on the phone had to speak to someone else, but she confirmed I could backorder, and it may be shipped in September.

Good luck guys! Its always a pleasure Scott!
Save one for me o.k.! :)

Trax,
If you look on the Custom 110 page at the Buck website there are two different kinds of buffalo scales as options; "Asian waterbuffalo" and "Smooth Asian Waterbuffalo." I think these come with the smooth asian waterbuffalo scales and not the ones with the grooves routered into them, which are the ones that I like.

Mike - My thought was that since they didn't say "water buffalo" and since volume customers get better selection/options on scales/blades/whatever than just ordinary Custom Shoppe customers, this could very well be American Bison. I have nothing against Bison, but now that you mention the routered water buffalo, I did see one here somewhere that I really liked...maybe with nickel-silver bolsters, BG-42, no pins, and a brown sheath... :D

Smooth Asian Water Buffalo is nearly Jet-Black and beautiful. Sometimes there is a little bit of white. I have one from the Custom Shoppe with finger grooves, nickle silver bolsters, no rivits, and a damascus blade. Gorgeous knife.

I'd like to know if they DYE that material or if it comes that black?

I would also be interested in hearing about the material used in the one from Smoky Mtn. since I have one back ordered? HELP Buck !!!

Mike - Looking at the two Buck Custom Shoppe water buffalo scale options under high Gamma correction and a bit of magnification, you can see the routered grooves in the "Asian Water Buffalo" scales; while the "Smooth Asian Water Buffalo" scales are...er...smooth...

But the SMKW pic, while small and of poor quality, seems to show a smooth finish rather than the routered... :(

But I'm still annoyed at the description not stating if it is American Bison or Asian Water Buffalo scales...while having a Bison inlay...

It'd be like releasing a Secretariat 110 with horse hoof scales, and then putting an inlay of a Zebra in the middle...doesn't make sense... :grumpy:

Edit: Texas Knifemakers Supply has some nice pics of jigged Water Buffalo...

Edit2: Naw, we'll leave this one off! :D

Trax,
I understand your issue. It may simply may be that they used the profile of an American Bison since that is what most people in the USA think of when they think buffalo. This is compounded by the fact that they didn't specify what type of buffalo the scales are made of. In any case it would be great to get a clarification from Joe or someone else from Buck.
Mike

Judging from the Mid-2006 Buck Special Editions, 532,55,& 303, all with Asian Water Buffalo handles, I'd have to say Buck used Asian Water Buffalo handles on this Buffalo 110. I don't care if they used Asian, American, or African Buffalo Horn. Odds are pretty good, if 6 different pieces of smooth cut buffalo horn were laid side by side, I couldn't differentiate one species from the next, and Asian is probably the best looking of the bunch. I have had custom knives with American Bison, and there was almost a green hue that ran through the horn. If Buck gives me a nice looking well made knife..I'll be satisfied:cool:

Scott, That means your always satisfied :D
I agree with the rest of your statement also!
That 110 chipflint looks awesome to me! I dont care what type of horn it is :)
Hope to see some pics soon!

More than likely its the asian horn they've been using on everything else.

Me, personally, I'd rather just keep doing business with the custom shop. I could be wrong, but I would think that my order would receive more attention then these.

I would think these are not getting the same attention those made in the custom shop receive, but then I havent seen these personally (in "person" either).

I tend to be careful of any dealings with smoky (from vast past experience).

Regardless of who is marketing the knives, they are still manufactured by Buck and I have confidence in their quality control. Case in point, I just received a limited edition S30V Alaskan Guide 110 with stag scales from Cabelas. The fit and finish on this knife are outstanding and in some respects better than several of my customs. I am very impressed with the stag scales on this knife. I have ordered one of the SMKW buffalo 110's and will report on it when it arrives. I spoke with one of their customer service reps and they expect to be able to ship the back ordered knives shortly after August 19th.

Mike, they are.

Personally, I just do not like doing business with smoky. I have much in the past 9over the years), and there are those "rare" moments when I do. I have known many people who worked there over the years and even they do not like some of the busness practices of smoky.

Case in point, they have been known to buy and sell seconds and have been known to sell seconds without specifying that they are (such). Although you will see them advertise and sell seconds, which they do, they do also sell ones that are not appropriately marked. Most makers either cross out their blade stamp, or do not stamp seconds. There are also those that are found to be seconds later and are sold off as such, but smoky in past has been known to be deceitful when it comes to advertising.

Im sure the buffalo knives are getting adequate attention. But with that said, I still believe my one custom order would receive better attention than a mass order.

Oh, and by the way, I have a few of the cabela's alaskan 110's in rosewood, they are good knives! I only had to return two of them for having bad laterally play in the locks. I really like them. Buck's quality control I believe is pretty good. Over the years (maybe 22 yrs?) I may have returned maybe 6-9 (?) knives for quality problems.

I have a couple sambar stag buck customs in nickel bolsters, pins, and ATS-34, outstanding knives! :D And the fit and finish on these is much better than the average one.

Mike, what customs do you have, that the "F & F" were better on these? Just wondering??

Generally speaking I'm referring to the recent BCCI offerings that were less than what one would expect from Buck. I buy a Custom 110 each year and so far they've been ok. Last year's was a little off, but not something I would send it in for. The Cabela's stag 110 was absolutely spot on...a really great looking knife with great fit and finish.

I own a 110 custom with bg-42 and water buffalo slabs. love the knife!
