Anyone have a "boring" but amazing knife?

Ok, I am on vacation, sitting around comparing steel with a blade junky relative. He carries a Manix 2 XL, I (typically) carry a Yojumbo. We both want the other one's knife. Not INSTEAD of ours..... in ADDITION to ours 😁

I show him my Hogue Ritter. I'm like "look at the quality of the machining, feel that action, check the symmetry of the edge". He agrees- incredibly high quality, well built production folder. Then, he kind of shrugs it off and goes back to playing with my Yoj. I tell him - yea, it is weird, it doesn't see as much pocket time for how impressed with it I am. Then it hits me - it is BORING. It isn't overly large (like both our carry knives), it doesn't have some menacing looking blade design (like my Yoj), not even any pimptastic carbon fiber scales or anything else that screams "disposable income". It is just a perfectly made, perfectly functioning, pocket knife. It is like a Glock 19 (with no mods) or a Toyota Camry.

Has anyone else ran I to this - a great knife..... that just gets a "meh" from you for lack of any pizazz?

Here is a funny one for you: the way you describe it, my ideal knife is "boring", I know the feel blind, use it without thought, etc. Any knife that doesn't become "boring" after the honeymoon is over is not part of the rotation :) There is something to be said about a long-term relationship ;)

Love the Yojumbo, BTW.

Yep, plenty of times!

I find those knives make great benchmarks, because when I figure which knife (or knives) can "fire" them from my collection, I know the replacement is something special.

Some might say the Manix 2 is boring. But not mine. Titanium screws and clip, ironwood scales, plus it's a CTS-XHP sprint.

There are fancier versions of the Camry, and you can always throw rims and a soupcan exhaust on it if you need to feel special.

I have a few like that.

My work edc is a Buck large vantage pro with brown canvas micarta. It’s plain but not ugly, stone washed 20cv blade no flash at all. But it functions perfectly and keeps an edge a long time in hard use. The shape and size melts into my hand and becomes a part of my hand. I’ve tried others in the rotation but I always go back to it.

Then my weekend off and around the house is a Marksman s35vn stonewashed blade and orange g10 handle. It’s a bit bigger and it works good for my time off chores and helping my son on the ranch.

I think all the knives I’ve used regularly were more plain Jane nothing fancy. Just great functional knives that work with you.

That is the boat I hope to be in soon. I only buy my Spydies str8 from the site. As soon as the M2XL is available again (it was for about a day and a half, a few weeks ago) I'm not just gonna get one but gonna get a Titanium ball cage and some brass or copper scales. No "boring" there.

I have a trojan brand utility knife. So one of those liner locks that take a razor.

Cost about $10

And have constantly looked to up grade it. But can't find a knife that works better.

These Pallares knives. No lock, no titanium, no flipper, no drop shutty, no clack, no jimping, no lanyard (hole), no looky me have expensive knife… etc… But it feels good in the hand, cuts effortlessly and has long blade that can cut sandwiches and big fruits.

I'd say every Mora knife I own. I'm not even sure how many I have at this point, but my original Mora #1 is still the favorite.

All my gray G10 Maxamet folders see way more carry and use since their scale swaps.
Now I don't mind buying knives with boring scales as long they can be upgraded to something nice.
I think celidor SAKs are also in this category.

My Spyderco Gayle Bradley is pretty boring by today's standards. It was cool as hell when I bought it in 2013. First Spyderco, first super steel, first CF, first knife purchased after joining here.

As I mentioned in another thread, it's been displaced by newer, lighter weight knives. However, I plan for custom scales and a more pronounced lockbar cutout to change that.

I'm thinking green CTek. Love the look, and want to try something different. I have plenty of CF, metal, a few micarta, and 2 wood.

Definitely the bugout.

My definition of boring might be a little weird, but if I pull it from my pocket and get little to no reaction from the crowd (knifebros or sheeples) then it's a boring knife.

In that view, any SAK, Mora, most Benchmades.

This knife will blow your mind. It cuts cardboard like a laser. Excellent bait knife. Best steak knife ever. Never needs sharping. Dishwasher safe. Under $5.

It simply defies logic to be that good and so cheap and so utterly boring.
