Anyone have the MKC Montana yet?

Taylorhardness on Instagram, he tested a few MKC knives and they were all under peak hardness for magnacut by a mile. He is very meticulous about his testing with real calibration and comparison testing. Besides MKC could just publish what HRC they are going for in all the advertising.
Did he test one of the knives we are discussing?

I like it but I dont like bearings in a knife I would use for everything. I also think it is hard to justify the price as long as the Hogue Ritter exists.

It's an okay looking knife however if the steel is at 59 then that's a big "L". I had one of the first Hogue Deka's that came out with Magnacut that was in 60 hrc range and it was not good, so much so that it went into a drawer and has stayed there. I don't understand using a steel like Magnacut and then not following heat treat standards for it, even if they are chasing "toughness". I would love to see someone do an actual use test on one of these. Not only to see how long the edge retention is but to see what it's like to sharpen it. The Deka I had was awful to sharpen so I'd imagine this isn't much better.

It's cool, and I love MKC as an example of American manufacturing and Josh Smith is a stand up guy. But it's just another liner lock and like most of MKC's products....it's for casuals, not for knife-nuts. Which is okay! But I'll pass.

He tested a broad sample of MKC blades, he can also do material testing I believe. He has issue with the testing methods and results given by the other tester another member posted. I trust Taylorhardness over the others that test based on his professionalism and expertise and that he is very transparent about what and why he does the testing in the first place and he isn't influenced by makers or manufacturers.

My own opinion is their knives are not meant for knife guys but for gear oriented types or guys with extra money that hear the idea of manly men carry knives. Nothing they offer is terribly interesting from a dedicated knife person because we all know knives we like better that fit our personal idea of what we prefer from better makers getting better results around the same price.

Thank you!

This knife is the price it is because MKC fanboys will pay that price. There's nothing in the build OR design that even remotely justifies an over 250 dollar price tag as far as I'm concerned. Said as much on the release video, but got my comment deleted, lol. They do have a pretty cool coffee bar in their headquarters tho...

That’s good that it seemed to perform okay in that test. I had not seen the pivot prior to that article, really don’t understand putting your brand name in two places on the same side of the knife. That’s like having two front doors on your house lol

If these things are really $250ish then that's Spyderco PM2 Salt with money left over so I'm not sure what strange reality I would want a Montana. Or I don't mind a Taiwan knife so a Rat 1.5 for just under $100 is close enough direct comparison and I'd far rather have that one. Or two or three of them.

Kind sir, it's 390.00. 😂

I can't even type it with a straight face, I guess there's a person willing to throw their money at anything. I'm about ready to folder paper into the shape of a knife for 20.00. Not that thick construction paper either, the standard printer paper.

I watched the documentary they did on their new facility. Apparently their payroll is a million a month before a single other expense. No wonder they have to sell this at $400-00.

I must be missing something because I really don't see the innovation and value in any of their knives.

Sustaining their cash flow and getting a realistic return on that sort of investment with their product mix, appears very difficult to me.....I'm not criticising them, just saying.

Being as they are a new knife company who didn't start off small, I'm assuming this is investor money from someone/group. Time will tell if it will pay off, but my 2cents is that is unsustainable.

Design wise the knives are just OK on some and meh on others. Prices are higher than custom makers and manufacturing is just typical, nothing special. I'm not seeing the hype either. I love that they are usa made, and I know how difficult it is to survive as a business owner with all the taxes and regulation. They're approaching crk knives prices without the design, history, back story or quality. To each their own.

I agree with you 100%.
Cord wrapping and basic machined scales over steel that does not have an optimum heat treat for custom knife money.
It makes sense why they asking the prices, but not why they are getting it.

They'll get their money and succeed (at least for awhile) solely because of who the owner was lucky enough to rub shoulders with.

The knives are nothing special. IMO, the blades all look a bit oddly shaped and the prices are high for what you're getting. Pretty Meh.

But when you're in with Steven Rinella, Joe Rogan, Donald Trump Jr, and the fox news crew......well.....you simply MUST be making the most awesome awesomest, bestest knives in the whole world.

Like someone else said, they make knives for the masses of general "in crowd" followers. Not true knife aficionados.

Its a sound business model if you can do it and solely making money is your primary priority.
