Anyone own any of the Cabela's Alaskan Guide Bucks?

Were you scared of scratching the cerokote with the razor or would it not do much to it?
In a word, yes. I knew it would scratch if I didn’t take it slow. It takes a light touch and you need to keep the edge of the razor blade at a pretty shallow angle. I actually scraped backwards with the blade quite a bit too to thin the logo. I then finished it up with some scotchbrite pads and 1000 and 1500 grit wet dry sandpaper. A little WD-40 for cleanup and I was done. I’m satisfied with the results, but I know I could’ve really messed it up if my hands slipped during the process. It’s probably why I haven’t attempted my 110… yet.

Interesting, Ive heard it wears off (one person said) quickly but I don't know how true that is. What do you think about using acetone if its a painted logo?

Ive been buying and returning and buying again the AG 119 because of "flaws" I didn't like. My most recent one is all good except the handle is a bit thin, what do you folks think about a thinner handle?

I'm not sure what's up with all the variance on these, are they each made by hand?

If you plan on using it, I'd just as soon have an uncoated one.
Or one with 5160 and a nice patina.

That cerakote is pretty durable, but with use it's gonna come off.
If your not gonna use it and don't like the sticker, flip the knife over. "Ta-Da".
😉

Yeah they all tend to vary a bit one from another as they are pretty much hand assembled.

I tried acetone and paint stripper first. It didn't touch it. I assume something is out there that will do it. I just haven't found it.

If you are really particular, I probably wouldn't mess with the logo. All it would take is one little gouge in the Cerakote and it would mess with perfection. Unless some marks in the finish is better than the white and yellow paint. To me it was. There are a couple little spots on mine, smaller than the head of a pin. I planned for mine to be a user, so I expect the finish will be roughed up at some point. I so wish Buck was still using DLC coating. As seen in other posts, the coating appears like the bluing on a gun. It's very durable. And it's so much easier to get rid of the logo.

And yes, there is a moderate amount of automation in making these knives but it's my understanding depending on the knife, it is assembled and finished by hand. I expect someone more educated on these matters will be along to explain that better.

Would the cerokote be bad for something like skinning a deer?

I don't really mind a scratch or whatnot as I want to use this knife for many years to come.

I don't think it would matter to the deer much.😉

But seriously, what matters most is what YOU want and like.
I wouldn't want cerakote on my kitchen knives, but I have used it otherwise and don't worry about it!

I would think the coating would last longer if you only processed game with it compared to cutting wood.

Well then, if you take your time, it can be done. And regardless of what it looks like, I know it will last a lifetime if you take care of it.

I think so and hope so. Now the goal is to find one I truly like....its a journey.

I bought this AG Vantage from Preston a year or so ago. Took the pictures when it came in the mail, but it looks the same today as when it arrived. Not sure the type of coating but it seems quite durable. I haven't scratched it yet. OH
Ps just checked the date, 2016 means it has a DLC coating.

kyhunt kyhunt you have some nice AG's!
Thank you. I have another stag 110 but can’t find a pic of it.

I also honestly thought I had the fillet knife but I can’t find it and my wife says I never bought the fillet knife. For the life of me I thought I remembered filleting fish with it a few times.

I don’t know. I might have to search the house and even go into the attic to look at camping stuf to see if it’s there.
