I have been trying to find a decent sized bandana. Most are cotton and too small. I think a bandana would be useful in my kit. Keep me cool, wipe my face, pick up hot pans, headgear, self defense with a weight in it, prefilter water, camo for face, sling for first aid. Any ideas, best colors, best material? Suggestions welcome.

Yes, I tend to sweat quite a bit when it is humid and I wear glasses which is a real pain when you are sweaty. I used to wear cotton bandannas and still do occasionally but I much prefer the Spec-Ops Recon Wrap now. It is a tube of a very thin breathable microfiber that you can wear in all sorts of configurations, see here for an example:

I have several, they are a little pricey but well worth the money.

You can find then in 24in sized. I carry atlist two every time i go hiking. Its a must have in a kit as much as a knife, well almost.

i carry a shemagh, its big enough to be used as a pillow, head wrap, scarf, bandage, sling for broken arm, gathering fruit, carrying kittens, etc etc

I used some old cotton fabric to make a couple large 'dew rags'. I don't leave home without one, just too useful. I also have one made from silk. Not as absorbent as cotton, but warm in winter and cool in summer.

I recently started carrying a bandanna all the time. So far the only material i've tried is cotton.

Yep. I buy them at Wal-mart and they seem pretty big. I wash them and run them through the dryer. Makes them nice and soft. I usually have one on me and another in my daypack. I have a few bright red ones just for the hi-vis factor.

I edc a bandana, it just has thousands of uses. However, I am needing to find one of a color that is in no way gang affiliated, just to be safe. I am thinking I'll get an olive drab one or somthing.

Cheap cotton fabric from a mill end / seconds store.

Flat sheets on sale...

Make your own triangle bandages...bandannas...whatever

Oh wow...I hadn't even thought of that.

TAD and Grey Group Training sell Shemaghs with skulls on em. I have one and love it to pieces. It's a very decent size as well.

Look for the military first aid kit arm slings (sometime called triangular bandages). They're OD, huge, cotton, and cheap. And they come with a big ol' black safety pin.

I just picked up a Recon Wrap and am loving it so far. Useful for both urban and woods setting.

my local GI Surplus store has GI "doo-rags"...the large brown 24x72" cotton bandana type piece of material. works like all the above listed uses, and brand new unused cost me $2.49

X2 on the cravat. This sounds silly, but I believe the cravat is the most useful piece of gear I carry. I carry 2 most times; one prepackaged, and one rolled up, damp and tied around my neck. It's mostly hot when I'm outside.

I bought 10 of them on ebay for $5 a few years ago. It was like winning the lottery...though, I do hold them in high regard.:)

One microfiber bandana in the pack and my hubbie always has a cotton one in his back pocket. You all are right, many uses.
