Anyone Want to Talk Traditional Fixed Blades?

Wow! Tons of amazing blades in here.

Does anyone have any experience with the Fallkniven Northern Lights series? They look amazing, but I'm afraid I would never want to use one because they are so pretty.

As a user, I recently picked up this one here for camping and backyard use. Been really happy with it. Affordable and just plain fun.

Yes I use the Northern Light series!
I have 4 of them, the Tor, Odin, Frey and Idun.
They sure look good, but they also take serious use.
I have used the 2 smaller ones at work and the 2 large knives for heavy duty chopping around the house.

They sure have held up for anything I have used them for.
The Frey had a thinner grind than the others and I had to resharpen it into a thicker edge, as I used it close to steel fittings.
This initially damaged the edge, but stopped with the thicker edge.

The other 3 have done very hard work in cutting, shaping, splitting and chopping wood, with very little wear on the edges.
The Frey is now on par with the others, so IMO if You look for strong, stainless, fancy and sharp knives, the NL's are expensive but great choices.

Hey, Tom, great to see you around again!!:D:D I always enjoy seeing your fixed blades paired with your scouts and SAKs (even though I've so far refused to let myself fall down the fixed blade rabbit hole ;)). I don't even know why I'm looking at this fixed blade thread (my answer to the thread title is, "Not me!" :p), but I'm glad I happened to be here to see you make an appearance!

+1 Great to see ya Tom!!!

Thanks GT, happy to be back! Hoping to convince you to try a nice, traditional fixed blade some day!

You too my friend!

I just snagged another Effingham 1-7. Also a stag-handled M3 Bayonet. I lack willpower when it comes to such matters.

Another! How many is that now that you have? I was looking at those last night in a comparison thread to the Randall, beautiful knives. It seems as though it would have great ergonomics to it.

Mikael - thank you for the info. It is great to read that these beauties can hold up that well. Would love some pics to help my dreams out

I like this thread,

Here is a knife that is fast earning a place at the top of the heap. A copy of an old Will & Fink Special Hunting Knife from Bark River.

Not to be a thread-pooper, they're all quite lovely, but we do know that these would roll in quite nicely here?

Perhaps a thread merge?

Pop ... :D.

All kidding aside, I was just trying to stir conversation on more traditional fixed blades. I have only looked through some of the thread suggested, and it is a great thread, I noted to it in my op. I'm really hoping for more discussion on all types of fixed blades considering the abundant amount of traditional folder threads.

Pics will be posted, but my main goal was open discussion with current opinions and thoughts.

I'll leave it up to the mods on what they want to do, not that I have any power to say one way or the other. No worries either way for me as long as I have a place to learn the history, how well they perform, types of traditional fixed blades, not only here in the US, but from other countries as well.

Sonnemann, I was sitting here admiring your Blackjack - it is a very handsome knife - when I thought I got a knife like that - this Randall #26 - 4". I've only skinned and butchered one deer with it, and that was several years ago - I think I should take it back out this season and give it another go. OH

What a beauty, Old Hunter.

The Randall Pathfinder is my go-to belt knife. I don’t know why. I have other knives. Even other small Randalls. I bonded with this one as soon as Randall sent it to me. It fits my hand, it’s a great task blade, it’s unobtrusive, it’s beautiful. “There are others just like it, but this one is mine.”

I had a pouch type sheath made for it. I prefer to be able to grab, pull, use, resheath. All without having to unfasten and refasten keeper snaps.

If I’m expecting to ride a knife hard and put it away wet, the Randall stays home. I’ll take a grungy-use knife instead.

The GEC line of fixed blades are great, no-nonsense knives that are meant to work:

Do any of you have preferred size blades or blade styles for different uses? I like a drop point or clip point for most fixed blades. For most edc stuff and small game I like 2 3/4"-3 1/4". For big game I like 3 1/2"- 4 1/2". I also have and use a 10" blade camp chopper I use clearing trails, shooting lanes and general rough use. It's hand forged 5160 modified spear point and has been used hard.

This is it all cleaned up.

This was at an ABS cutting competition several years ago.

Very cool pics Chris

Pretty much any game related task I prefer the same sizes but I have only used drop point knives. I heard often early in my teens to stay away from clip points when hunting. Never really questioned it.

I've yet to use a real chopper. I had a small axe that I used but lost it last year. Either that, or I left it in the tree stand and someone grabbed it. It was a cheaper Coleman so no worries.

Unfortunately I have struggled getting into hunting (not for lack of trying, but I find it is a difficult sport to get into without a mentor), so I haven't used many fixed blades for purposes other than general utility and camp/hiking/outdoor use.

I prefer the look of classic spear points and clip points best I think, neither have had trouble with my tasks.

For length, despite being on the large in stature side, I'm always wary of a blade longer than 4.5 inches for a knife (not a machete), not really sure why.

Those are just what seems to have been my preference, which are likely rooted in lack of experience.

I'll see what I prefer as I continue to live and learn!

I love this thread!
There are so many knives showed here, that follows my taste in knives!
