I would like to take this time to point out that I have, aside from the random beer, refrained from partaking in the drinking since SWDHTBO (she who doesn't have to be obeyed AKA MIL) has been in town.

That's right folks, my MIL frustrated her daughter more than she did me.:D

Still here for another week though.

another week!?!
you both have my deepest sympathy!
3 days with my mom is pretty close to the limit - and by that point wifey is popping xanax like tic-tacs.
not sure either of us could last that long with hers, either.

I am building a survival kit.I have seen so many different BOB's and various custom built survival bags and such but one thing I never see people include is a cell phone.Like a cheap pre paid one and maybe and a couple 20 dollar phone cards.I know in an extreme event all communications could be blacked out but if not it seems a cell phone could be a great survival tool. What are your thoughts?DN

I carry a prepaid cell, as well as my daily cell in my BOB, sure why not. During large scale events, it is true that cell is one of the first forms of communication to fail, BUT FEMA and a number of local state groups have COWS (Cellular O Wheels) and it will also be one of the first forms of comms to come back up. Thats the theory anyways. The phone card are dependant on being able to connect to the card providers calling network, so.... that might be iffy. One card is all I would get.

I also carry a 2m handheld HAM radio. Getting you HAM lic these days is about brain dead simple, most anyone can pass the test, and one of the most important "fall back" forms of communication available. (IMHO). Look at it this way. Last year during the Ice storm that hit New England, a lot of the information that got out about what cell towers were damaged, where trees where down, and other trouble spot came over the 2 meter repeater, then was passed onto the authorities/repair crews.

Just my thoughts... ya know? You area might be completely different then mine.

yeah thanks for the tip on the ham radio.I'll look into it.I'm in the desert in southern california.

Ok, well in Cali, your going to have a ton of places to assist you in looking into getting your ticket. Google Ham Radio Podcast. Free online Podcasts you can download. I burned the classes to CD, listened to them going to work and back each day, took the free practice tests on eHam.net and had my ticket in less then a month. You location will give you a lot of use from a 2m/440 radio. Both CA ARES and CA CERT use 2m.

Drop me a PM if I can help you get started :)
Cheers!

MrCoffee, that has always interested me also, I am going to take your advice as well. Any ideas about how much money we are talking to get your ticket all together?

Well... for the test it is $10 I think... or $14, but less then $20. My first radio was a used Radio Shack HTX200, very small, compact 2 meter rig. I spent $45+5 on it. But when we had the floods in 2007 (not the huge ones of 2005) I upgraded to a new Yaesu 2800M. Pretty decent 2meter mobile that I use as a base. It was $129 shipped. Decent 2 meter rig. I added a Icom 900A (dual band) and most recently a Yaesu 2/400 dual band HT I use in the Truck/BOB.

Don't get me wrong, I dont spent a lot of time messing with HAM radio, it is just one more tool I have in the toolbox. I do sometime monitor the radios during heavy storms and such, as well as CB and GMRS since i am fairly close to a major highway and folks still use them to report trouble. My wife is getting her ticket to, since she drives home late at night. I think my total investment has been around $300, but you can get into it for less then $100 if you are careful with your cash.

back to the grind.

Coffee I saw a magnet i wanted to buy you but it was a little too girly. It said "no coffee, no workee."

Both mom’s at the house? No wonder the Shotgunners partake. Will they be in on the filming of Mrs S’s episode of Intervention?

I’ve got my letter in progress. So far I’ve only got the template started:

Dear Mrs. S-

Your drinking has affected me negatively in the following ways….
[cue the crying and cursing] :D
