April 2020 Buck of the Month - Released

I'm not a fan of the blade shape so much but I wasn't discouraged from getting one. I tried one of the select models at a local outdoors store and found the action to be super smooth and in hand I liked it much more than I suspected I would. So, as soon as I saw S35VN and burlap micarta I didn't even bat an eye before hitting that buy button. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I agree, good looking smooth flipper.

Well. I thought these would come with pine box but came in standard yellow factory box.

Cool knife. Feels good in hand.

Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait. Mine shipped today but has to come all the way to the east coast. It will make a nice addition to the EDC roster.

The 112 BOTM says 'African Ebony' and all that I have seen are dark..I don't think it is the same Ebony handles Buck uses for regular knives.

Got mine this morning here in Washington. I'm very pleased, as usual, better in hand than a picture can portray.

I think you are referring to the posts (See post copied below) from Fixall and myself (and others).

As I am just curious, does anyone have a side by side comparison picture of the two knives ?

Did the 2018 December BOTM come with a Pine Box ?

As Bucksway says, the 112 BOTM says "African" Ebony and the current 112 in the custom shop says "Crelicam" Ebony. As the description of the wood is different, then these would be different knives (which, I believe, Fixall was interested in knowing, as I also am). Also, I'm curious to know what is the actual difference in the woods ?

From Fixall - "... I purchased the December 2018 Buck of the Month 112. It featured S30V steel, nickel-silver bolsters, and Crelicam Ebony. Only 250 were made.

Now I've come to find out that you can make that exact same knife; 112, s30v, nickel-silver bosters, and ebony in the custom store for cheaper than the BotM cost. That kind of bums me out."

the Pine box costs something. Some people like it and some people it doesnt matter. But it does have a cost associated with it. plus a limited amount were produced under the BOTM.

Not all of them but a few in no particular order

Thank you ! - that is a great start. What I like about your 2019 image is that the Original retail prices are listed with each knife and the month (I assume it is a screen capture at the end of the year). I think I can figure out the Month of each of the pictures you listed from other information I have. Thanks again !

Sorry, I wasn't trying to cause a scene and derail the thread with the ebony 112 so I tried to refrain from posting about it anymore in this particular thread.

I'm not really upset about it, so I don't feel the need to make it it's own thread, it's just made me a little more hesitant to purchase a BotM unless it's really unique or calls to me.

And I, for my part, don't want to 'speak' for Fixall. I have just started collecting Buck knives and have my own issues with BOTM knives quality (two completely different BOTM from the one mentioned). I personally really want to know if, as stated by Fixall, that Buck does or does not, sale in the custom shop, at a date after the release of the BOTM, the same exact knife.

It seems in this case - the wood has a different name - "African" Ebony vs. "Crelicam" Ebony (I don't know what is the difference). As Fixall said - it makes me hesitant to purchase BOTM knives.

I recall Joe Houser had Ebony he had held onto for 20 something years and then they started using Ebony from Taylor. One may of been Crelicam and the other African Ebony, if it was a limited run
Of old stick from Joe H then that would explain the difference. If it doesn't matter what type of Ebony then I could see why finding one in the custom shop a couple dollars less than the BOTM would be bothersome. The limited run of 100 has value that's different than the custom shop version. One is 1 of 100 of old Ebony and one is sustainable ebony possibly from Taylor Guitars.

I'm sure someone on here knows positively the difference between the two.

J Hubbard: "Everything we are using at this time is from Cameroon. Taylor refers to it as African Ebony."

I think the 112 Buck of the Month came out before Buck decided to make Ebony a regular offering again and probably before any real (or announced) partnership with Taylor. Buck made the right decision to move back to Ebony, it's beautiful wood. I may have paid more for my 112 BOTM than I could now, but it still came with documentation and should retain added value.

The 20 year old Ebony Joe Houser hung on to were pieces of Ebony that Buck would not use because everyone desired dark black Ebony with no streaks. Years later, Taylor changes the perception of color and streaks, Buck calls it Vintage Blonde Ebony and we get a "now" desirable 110 (0110BRSLC-B).

I guess timing is everything. Here are some pics.
