AR M4 style rifle, which one?

You guys are going to hang me from a tree but now I kind of want an AR now instead of an AK and after two threads and all that great input on how to mod out an AK. Ok what is the best deal out there with a flat top M4 style and possibly a quad rail already included or if you know of a good after market quad rail for cheaper then great. I have heard that the S&W M&P rifles are good ones and have heavier barrels than the Bushmasters, but that is just what the dude at Cabela's said.

Thank you guys and again for putting up with my indecision here.

hey bud we both live in the 'rock if ya wanna try both before ya buy give me a shout.

i got a couple of M4's, and a AK47 & AK74, would be glad to let ya try 'em out.

my em is www.cvettercr1@aol.com

*cough* SIG 556 *cough* *cough* :D

Mostly prefer my AK's... but was entertaining the 556 question - But I just ain't comfortable with the DI based system... Prolly cause I'm kinda lazy, and it just seemed all too complicated!!! :D

So, I came across a slightly used SIG 556 and said Viola!!!! A good answer! May not be overly fond of the plastic fore-end, but it's an amazing gun! And PMags at $14, well, No AR's for me!

Except.... Well, as a fun gun, I came across a good AR lower awhile ago, on the off chance something might crop up... And it did - I went for the AR 57!!! Just think - 4 mags and you've got 200 rounds of some sweet short range effective FUN!!!! Course, mag changes are nowhere near as quick as the basic AR/AK/HK/FAL... :o

With the QC issues sig has been having, and the fact that they decided to take a major shortcut and leave the lower reciever lug as aluminum rather than harden steel as it should be, I wouldn't take one of those if you paid me.

And I say this as a diehard fan of the 55x series. I was really hoping they would get it right on this second release because its really the best of both the AR and AK, but alas lately they never seem to miss an opportunity to screw up.

Ok lets take the Ruger conversation to another place please I am not interested in the Mini 14, 30 or the Ruger AR right now so just drop it guys you are making the children cry.

Oh and who are some nice trigger makers I have looked at the Timney triggers and they look nice, but who are some others out there.

Also uppers can you name some upper manufacturers, as you can tell I know almost nothing about who makes AR parts I and just familiar with Armalite, Rock River, DPMS, Colt and Bushmaster in terms of AR manufacturers.

Sorry about the double trigger post I thought that the forums didn't register that I had posted the first time and typed it out again.

Well, definitely include LaRue on that list. One of my coworkers built a 'varminter' AR using a LaRue upper and that rifle is incredibly accurate.

He's the same guy who built a 16" M4 using a complete Lewis Machine & Tool upper. The LMT really impressed me too.

Another good one is Bravo Company.

You can obtain LMT and BravoCo upper receiver groups and many other parts and accessories from www.bravocompanyusa.com >>>IF<<< they happen to have them in stock.

LaRue stealth? I've had issues with their barrels, everything else is just dandy, but the barrels? Not good in my books.

Stick with Noveske (Drool) or White Oak if your looking for a great barrel

I'm still waiting on my Noveske barrel and they aren't taking orders till they catch up on backorders, but you can still snag a upper or full rifle from them without a wait.

Other good companies for things are (In my books at least they are good):
Yankee Hill Machining - http://yankeehillmachine.com/
Spikes Tactical - http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php
Noveske - http://www.noveskerifleworks.com/
White Oak Armament - http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/
LaRue - http://www.laruetactical.com/
Magpul - http://www.magpul.com/
Geissele Triggers - http://www.geissele.com/
PRI - http://www.pri-mounts.com/
Timney Triggers - http://www.timneytriggers.com/

Of course then theres your favorite all in one stores that carry things.

Brownells - http://www.brownells.com/
Natchez - http://www.natchezshooterssupplies.com/
JTS - http://jtdistributing.net/store/
GTS - http://global-tactical.com/
Rainier Arms - http://www.rainierarms.com/

That should keep you busy for awhile browsing through all the eye candy and budget busters...I can list twenty or so more if needed but I figured thats a good list to start with.

He must have got lucky with his LaRue because I saw him assassinate a groundhog at 500 yards with that thing.

(Really though for all I know it was a LaRue upper with some other brand of barrel in it. I asked him who made his upper receiver and he said it was a LaRue.)

Yeah Noveske is another good name. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Those terms only mean anything if you live in one of the states which still adheres to some parts of Comrade Clinton's "Assault Weapon" Ban of 1994. With an AR barrel, a pre-ban style means it has a bayonet lug and suppressor. These features are believed by liberals to make the gun more likely to commit a violent crime. They had to do something about all the street gangs doing drive-by bayonet attacks you know. Also banned were features like high-capacity (more than ten rounds) magazines and pistol grips.

Specifically it means such parts made before the ban went into affect.

When the Ban went into sunset a few years ago, these features were legal once again (in most states) and manufacturers once again sold them to the civilian public.

Ok so a post ban rifle does not have a bayonet lug but it will take standard capacity (30rd) magazines?

while pre-bans are cool i wouldnt pay any big premium for one vs a post ban, heck my colt AR is a pre-ban and it doesnt have a bayo lug, it was made right when they were changing over, thus no lug, i dont care my other one has one and i havent put a bayo on but one time, ever, M4's look funky with bayo's anyway lol.

also one of my AK's is pre' and one is post', again not a lotta difference between the 2.

if ya live in a state where it matters, different story of course but i dont.

There is a lot of well intentioned advice from many sources that is incomplete so, read a lot before you spend any money.

Colt 6920's can be found on Sturm for $1100 which is a heck of a bargain. Since these are LE rifles, you can avoid the earlier Colt issues with non-standard parts.

If you want a factory turn-key railed rifle with a rail that is quality gear and not some cheesy Mall Ninja-esque cheese grater, consider a Daniel Defense M4 rifle (search DDM4).

The cheaper AR-15 clones are acceptable rifles if money is tight and you don't plan on modding them much. However, if you are going to add a $300 rail to a cheap AR-15 you are far better buying an AR-15 that is $300 more expensive and has the right parts installed at the factory. Modding a cheap rifle is far more expensive then buying a good one to start with.

If you know how to custom spec your AR-15, CMMG can provide a solid rifle at a great price. If you don't know what the differences between bolts and buffer tubes are however, you are better off buying a DDM4 or Colt 6920.

Thanks... I'll keep that in mind... But I also don't expect to ever go in harm's way with it... If that was the case, I'm strickly AK!!! :D

It won't take going in harms way to crack the reciever. Just a certian amount of rounds. The less you shoot the longer it will last, but at some point its going to crack.

Hey bitter1, did you pick up one of theose stripped lowers yet? $225 for a stripped lower sounds like a lot to me. I haven't shopped AR lowers for quite a while, but even this past March I recall seeing complete lowers (with stocks) at a gun show for $275.

Definitely check out Essential Arms, http://www.essentialarms.com/IEindex1.html. A LOT of folks have built on their lowers. The only catch with them is they need to be shipped to an FFL. Get acquainted with a local gun shop, and get the scoop on their transfer policy and fees. My guess is you'd come out ahead ordering an EA stripped lower and paying transfer fees. But if money isn't an issue, by all means, go for whatever you want.
