AR M4 style rifle, which one?

No I have not picked up anything AR yet and money is kinda an issue I would like to get the build or a complete AR for a little under or at a grand so I am really going to have to shop around and do some waiting for the prices to drop a little bit. And that essential arms seems like a good deal and RRA has a good price (from what I have seen so far) on a complete upper for about $475 but that is an online price and not including the price of shipping and getting it to an FFA dealer.

And I do want to get a rifle or upper with the rail already installed so that I do no have to mess with installing the rail incorrectly. And the price at a grand is with out the optic factored in I know that to get the Aimpoint that I want (Comp ML2) it is going to cost me but I want an optic that will last me a long time. And if you guys know any good mounts for the ML2 I am looking at the La Rue mounts right now but if you know any cheaper ones that are just as good them I would be pleased to hear about them.

Thank you

really from the research i've done (my opinion based on my research) there are only a few to choose from:
M&P
Noveske
LMT
Charles Delay
Colt
Daniel Defense
those are in no particular order btw

I'm left-handed and the only companies that make left-handed rifles are Stag and DPMS. I have both and the Stag is the better of the two, in my opinion.

I'd go with the LaRue mount, and if you ask reeeeeaaallly nicely they might even cut you a deal on a combo of mount+aimpoint. Even better then whats listed on the site, but you need to ask reaally sweet like.

Course they might just tell you to pay regular price and then you'd just have to enjoy the dillo dust in the package when you get it.

Also FYI building a upper isn't all that hard, built mine myself without any real issue other then me loc-tite'ing my keys to my pant leg in a somewhat unrelated incident.

Complete upper assemblies do not have to ship to an FFL. Uppers, complete or not, are not the component that needs to be registered (unless you want to do an SBR, but it sounds like you want an M4-type gun). Only the lower receiver needs to be registered. A stripped or complete lower receiver needs to go through an FFL. You can order and receive your garden variety (16" and longer) complete uppers all day long, so long as your state and local laws allow.

And IIRC, the last upper I purchased cost about $20 in shipping via UPS (from Del-Ton).

I don't know about the cantilever mount for the scope but for that price it is worth a try.

I can find cheaper, and better quality goto LaRue and click on "Optic Mounts" (not combo optic+mount, just plain mounts)...and how about this...Before you go and get a mount how about you get the Aimpoint first! Things change, you might start thinking and decide you want a Aimpoint Micro T-1 or that you get a chance to try out a EOtech and decide you like that better...

If that happens your out the 200$ for that mount...Best to slap that on the list of "things I might want in the future" and focus on the more critical items frist.

Before I purchased anything I had a month long probation period where I thought about was it needed, what issue would it fix, and could I afford it. There were a bunch of items that I WANTED but I deemed that I didn't need.

Also as a side note I do reccommend LaRue heavily I know, the reasons for this are that I used LaRue mounts and a Rail on my rifle and never had a single issue. The LaRue folks hand out a ungodly ammount of gear to servicemen every year and if they can't afford to give away the gear they need then they give them a hefty discount. Without that discount or those items some people wouldn't have been able to afford all the critical items they needed before they shipped out. So I know at times I sound like a LaRue whore, but I'd just like to mention that I bring them up so often as they make damn good products [with the exception of the Stealth Barrels] and they support the people that need and use those products.

Yeah I think that when I do finaly assemble the rifle the optic will be the last thing to be bought, I think that there is a store here in town that carries both optic brands and I think Cabelas carries both Aimpoint and EOTech.

Oh and is there a specific LaRue mount that you suggest?

When it comes to mounts I'm not to picky as long as its a decent piece that holds onto the optic and rail. One of the lessons learned (the hard way) was to zip tie every optic, QD Mount, Screw on Mount, and other thing that might fall off. After I watched a QD mount quickly disconnect itself mid-run zip ties became standard accessories. I didn't want my optic that I paid for to fall off somewhere at a time when I couldn't recover it.

I rocked a LaRue mount on my Aimpoint and a LaRue pivot mount on the 3x, both had a custom 2 black zip ties on each. Granted my uses and your uses were/are/will be quite different.

Depending on if you are infact going with a CompM2 and if you plan on getting a 3x magnifier to go with it I'd go for a http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=37 its personal preferance completely but with a 3x thats what I would go for.

If your just using a M2 and no 3x then you might want to go with a mount that doesn't shift it so far forward. Also the height is your call as I don't know what type of co-witness your looking for.

I am just planning on running a comp ML2 and no magnifier and I didn't know that there where different types of co witnessing. I might just pop over to La Rue and see what they have so I can if they do sell right out of their location here in Texas.

Make sure you get dillo dust with your order!

You can combo a mount and a M2 to save a little bit as well.

Co-Witness only applies if your going to have BUIS. Between absolute cowitness and 1/3 cowitness I'd opt for 1/3 cowitness (which LaRue mounts tend to offer [depending on which mount]) again Co-Witness isn't all that important if your just plinking and it only applies if you put BUIS on your black beauty.

I'd also set some money aside for a 3x and a pivot/flip to side mount cause lets face it...you know your going to want to get one.

Not having iron sights on a rifle is the mark of a serious optimist. I, on the other hand, am able to claim Mr. Murphy as a dependent...he lives in my pocket most days. A few weeks ago I was shooting in a competition and after several misses at 100 yards I knew there was a problem with the optics, I was able to dump the scope which was on a QD mount in a matter of seconds and finish with the irons. I also dislike the clamp on BUIS type of sights...I want something that can be smacked into a wall corner or the frame of a car door and still be dead on. My solution is to always start with a carrying handle rifle and have the carrying handle shaved and a flat top type mount added. This way I have the low flat top scope mount plus the absolute strongest iron sights possible. If you factor in the cost of BUIS doing it this way is likely cheaper than buying good sights for a flattop. Plus carrying handle guns on the secondary market are often discounted because everyone wants a flattop!

Here is my solution...might not work for everybody but the smith who did mine (and there are quite a few who do this including JD Jones) says it is a common mod among both professionals and competitors.

I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to accessories, the less that you hang on a gun the less there is to go wrong. The only thing other than a scope I would ever consider is a tactical light and I still have never hung one of those from a rifle...but I might some day.

Hey Absintheur, is that an NC Star scope? If so, how do you like it? What power/reticle do you have? Did the scope go bad on your shoot, or was there another reason (not sighted in) for it not working?

I've looked at theose before for a range/fun gun. Would you recommend that scope?

Edit: And I like your chopped carry handle idea.

Impressive set-up.

Is that a Titanium coated bolt?
Does that have any actual benefit over chrome?

The TiN coated bolts require less lubrication and are easier to clean. The also reportedly reduce wear on the receiver but you are talking about having to sends tens of thousands of rounds downrange to see any effect in that area.

I own Bushmaster, Armalite, Rock River Arms. All are flawless and function perfectly. You can't go wrong with any of these brands. My experience with Colt has been that they're nice but you pay more for the Colt name. Great rifle, but no better than the ones I mentioned above.
