Are knife guys like gun guys?

You have a nice looking shotgun there!
Thank you Robert, it’s ok, I try to keep it as simple as I can. It’s on the heavier site and little bit longer for a home sweeper but I have a kick out of it when I put the factory stock on and take it to the range… I handle recoil very well and magnums don’t bother me much, besides I don’t shoot often those. If I get to this point, I like my next one to be the 870 Marine Rem, we recently picked one for a friend of mine and I like it a lot, it only needs a small reflex sight IMO and nothing else…

I'd say Cold Steel is more of a S&W wheel gun. Reliable, solid, and you can use both as a hammer in a pinch and not worry about it.

First, it depends on if the S&W is a wheel gun or not. Then, we have to ask whether that wheel gun has an internal lock.

This feature is often derogatorily called a "Hillary Hole" as S&W supposedly added the unsightly feature under pressure from the Clinton Administration. It is a totally superfluous "safety" mechanism by which the internals of the gun can be locked with a tiny key. Aside from blemishing the otherwise beautiful aesthetics of their revolvers, there are practical concerns under the "extra things to do wrong" category.

First, let's hope that the little key never gets lost! Second and despite constant assurance that it could never ever happen, there have been cases of the lock incidentally engaging under recoil. My gunsmith actually had one of these come in. Even worse, it had become stuck shut.

This feature has driven up the value of already-desirable older models that don't have it. Thankfully, S&W eventually started offering models without it again. I just wish they'd ditch it across their whole line-up.

That Rem 870 Marine is a fine shotgun!

Makes sense but where do we leave a good old sweeper ?
There is nothing like the barking of a 20” 590A1 shooting green buckshot Olins…:thumbsup:
I appreciate a good shotgun, and can run one fine, but I just don't shoot them much. If SHTF, I would tend to hand out my reliable, high firepower and easy to operate guns. So, I would probably be left holding a sub-compact 9 and a 12 gauge pump. Again, no brand loyalties here. I would probably grab the Rock Island M5.

I was thinking the same thing.
I think I had a revelation....

Yes, knife guys are like gun guys!

Unfortunately, there are some gun and/or knife guys, as well as some car, motorcycle, owner operator truckers, tools, stereo, CB/HAM users, archery, photography, ski, snowboard, bicycle, computer, shoes/boots, backpack, garden tractor, chainsaw, lawnmower ... you name it, guys who will tell you "If you don't have a (_brand_) you don't have 💩!" (a few will include a model name or number, along with the brand.)

i try to avoid such "people". I buy the "best" I can afford, and that I like.
I'm not out to "impress" anyone. What I own does what I need it to. I've never needed the "latest and greatest" whatever.
(except maybe for the annual flu and the Covid's vaccines).

I never saw much sense in "keeping up with the Joneses". Truth to tell, the "Joneses" I knew that had all the "latest and greatest, or $150,000 plus invested in say Snap On or MAC tools and tool chests, weren't all that happy. They also seemed to have little - if any - time to enjoy what they had, as they needed all the overtime they could get to pay for everything.

Fortunately, I got old enough to drop out of the rat race without getting put in a box and planted 6 foot under, so I did. 😁

I think Glocks are more like SAKs/Cold Steels as mentioned above, but only as far as the tools themselves.

In my experience Glock GUYS and CRK GUYS are both most likely to argue passionately that their brand of gun/knife is DEFINITELY THE BEST, and that if you don’t agree you just don’t understand.

(PS - I love my Glock - it really is just the best… haha).

I love my Glock! But the best handgun for each person is the handgun that they shoot well and enjoy shooting.

For sure - same with knives and cars…
And most everything else. Someone who does a lot of video editing for work or pleasure will have a favorite program or operating system they prefer to work on though most people are fine with a very basic laptop.

For most people a Glock will do what they need. Throw it in a holster or safe and it will go bang when you pull the trigger no frills.

For most a simple folder that holds its edge decently and can be touched up without hundreds spent on expensive sharpening equipment will be fine for an edc knife.

We are enthusiasts here and reminding ourselves of that is helpful. Being a gun guy and a knife guy myself, I tend not to blink seeing people spend several thousand on a carry gun or throwing money around on a Rexford or Shiro. At the same time, im not a watch guy so the prospect of spending several thousand on a wrist watch doesn't appeal to me though I recognize that the difference between that and my Sebenza is probably not all that dissimilar.

👍

That’s the way to be imho.

I consider myself a car guy, gun guy, and more than either of those a knife guy, but I’ve never tied myself to specific brands. I’ll never be a Glock guy or a Ford guy, even though I would tend to pick those brands over most others for utilitarian pistols or cars.

Honestly when I see someone writing about how xyz brand is DEFINITELY THE BEST I generally feel kinda sorry for them because they’re DEFINITELY missing out.

Part of the fun is experiencing what is out there! I have preferences of course but I too find it sad and limiting when I see someone say something like "I wont buy ANYTHING that isnt brand X or using lock Y."

I've been thinking about getting a new laptop. And it seems like a gamer's laptop has what I want, but I don't play games. Been looking at the MSI with 512G SSD plus a 1T HDD with the RGB backlit keyboard.

Yeah im not a computer guy (yet) but like all the other things I mentioned I know there are lots of little factions and fiefdoms of loyalty and preferences there much like knives and guns and watches and anything else that people invest a lot of time and money into.

The real issue I see is when an “outsider” is trying to educate themselves in a certain field and instead of giving unbiased answers they get bombarded with “get this brand or you’ll explode!” Or “spend this much on this model or don’t even bother!”.

I see that much more on gun forums than I do here, though there’s always the inevitable “Buy a PM2!” When a newcomer asks about a decent $50 work knife. I do think most people have good intentions to help save time and effort rather than just proclaiming brand superiority. Some gun forums, though- it’s like you’re wearing the scarlet letter if you trust this brand over Glock or carry a revolver over semiautomatic. Or the new thing- “Don’t even bother carrying unless you have a weapon mounted light, red dot, and at least two extra mags!” Which gets me because I can’t even recall a time that I’ve been in public and the power has gone out, and I prefer iron sights because it’s one less thing to go wrong, and as a citizen my job is to get away, not hunt down the threat- so if I need 50+ rounds over the course of two reloads I made a bigger mistake a long time ago going wherever I am.

It probably has more to do with the idea that guns are inherently defensive devices that you might actually need to rely on- so it’d be pretty silly to divulge too much from a brand you know won’t let you down should you really need it. Knives are more so tools or pocket jewelry, so we get pickier as our preferences grow, knowing we most likely won’t die if a new knife doesn’t perform like we think.

I refuse to take sides.

Guns - I love Glocks and 1911's and AR15's and lever action rifles and .... You get the picture.
Knives - Love them all if they are well made. I love super steels, low alloy carbon steels....
Sharpening systems - again, love them all. Very partial to my Edgepro, diamond stones, but every once in a while have to break out my waterstones or Norton India from some quality time.

I see no reason whatsoever to have to choose, and REFUSE to be pigeon holed.
