Are Moras any good?

They are awesome!!! Like Link2Derek said buy a few. Great gifts.
I would start with any of the rubber/plastic combo handled ones. Great ergos and traction.

My favourite. Classic #1. Super light and gets work done!

Carbon Companion, Stainless Companion, Classic #2, Classic #1

Where I live Mora must be the most used knife in construction business. Those guys, when they need a knife, mostly buy those or other Swedish makers knives because they are cheap, light and sturdy. Those knives are used really hard. Also those manufacturers make knives specially for the job.

The old, wood handle Mora can be found in most toolsheds and summer cottages. There they are used for many jobs like whittling, making kindling for starting a fire, cleaning fish etc. Get one, you will not be sorry. Personally I prefer Finnish makers and more expensive knives these days, but there is nothing wrong with Mora.

Mora knives have also seen lot's of use in drunken brawls, but that's just because of Finnish drinking habits :D

I honestly don't understand how Mora can provide such a good quality blade for so little money, but they can and do. For years I avoided them like the plague because I hated the looks of the fat handle compared to the skinny blade. But once I started using one I got it. The handle is so comfortable that you can put lots of pressure into anything you do. There isn't a better deal in a small fixed blade. And even though I own many, I still think they are FUGLY ;)

I just got some 711's. I was under the nieve impression that the grip was some type of semi dense spongy foam or some such, as many folk made much of it. It turns out that the grip SHAPE is were the praise comes from, as it is hand filling, with better ergonomics than say a Companion. Particularly if you have large hands. The grip itself is still hard like pretty much every other Mora. These are nice little units though and well worth grabbing up a few.

Supposedly Mora is about to make a full tang knife in 2016.

They have hinted to it on their website.
Full tang much like the way Fällkniven makes full tang on their A1 or F1.

So soon your should be able to get your hands on such a knife.

I have heard this model will be limited production, which means it will be very $$$.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE MORA KNIVES :D !!!!! WHY ???? Because I wasn't introduced to them 40 plus years ago and have spent thousands of dollars on other knives that don't perform any better than the Mora. I could have made it just fine with the Mora on 99.5 percent of my knife needs.

Geez Derek, your pics make me want knives I didn't think I did,,, that clipper looks great. A good back up to my companion.

Haha - thanks for the compliment. And, yep, I permanently keep a Clipper and a HD Companion in my vehicles - ya' never know when they'll come in handy... especially in a situation where you risk damaging your blade. $13 or $16 isn't gonna break me.

Here's one more look at the Clipper MG (Military Green, and yes that is a patina on the blade):

That's a mighty wide microbevel you got there. Do you prefer it like that?

I've kept my Moras as a zero grind, and haven't had an issue with them so far, so I'm curious of you changed it because of something that happened, or "just because".

Derek your phot got me thinking of two sharpening questions. How hard is it to convex the scandi and secondary bevel or no?

You know,, at first I maintained the scandi grind on the waterstones,, but ultimately for convienance I just sharpened it on the Sharpmaker. It cuts great

Cackmandu, its quite easy. a little sandpaper, and whatever backing you like, depending on how far you want to push it.

I thought someone would notice that eventually. On some of my Moras I have re-profiled the edge to a narrow V-grind (Edge Pro Apex). I thought it would be easier to maintain, but that's not necessarily the case. They are easier to sharpen, but they are also much easier to dull. My more recent Mora users (like the orange one pictured above) still have the stock Scandi grind, and I now prefer that. I don't strop very often, I simply touch it up on a fine ceramic rod every time I use them hard. Doing that will eventually result in a micro bevel, and that's ok with me.

Really great image, Dan! Makes me want to get back out in the woods right now. Gotta hit the sack, though. So tomorrow...

Could you tell me this canadian connection for cheap morass

Outdoor Pursuits in Alberta. I think that I got the last of their 711's ? Three of them at 14 a pop. I'm currently waiting for a couple of the new Pro Robusts and a D2 Leatherneck coming in from the wet coast.

I remember thinking the same thing once, lol. But gathering up and playing with new toys keeps it fresh. :)
