Are "Rambo" type knives practical?

I just did this, not being a smartass here guys.

prac·ti·cal [prak-ti-kuhl] Show IPA
adjective
1.
of or pertaining to practice or action: practical mathematics.
2.
consisting of, involving, or resulting from practice or action: a practical application of a rule.
3.
of, pertaining to, or concerned with ordinary activities, business, or work: practical affairs.
4.
adapted or designed for actual use; useful: practical instructions.
5.
engaged or experienced in actual practice or work: a practical politician.

I would say that describes mine, I put them to use, they work fine. Are there typically better options? Sure, depending on what you're trying to do of course. :D

I'll be crying too much, not able to post if I do break it. lol

If it doesn't break, try using a steel baton. We'll get that thing to separate if it's the last thing we do. We can't have any hollow handle knife holding up and ruining their bad reputation. :D

Yes. :D

Strap that knife on. Next thing you know you're jumping out of airplanes, killing vietcong by the droves and some hot vietnamese chick asks if "I can come america with you?". What's not to love.

Not to mention, carrying a Rambo knife makes the sound effects so much cooler. Y'all should give it a try sometime.

Good points! I think the sound effects are the clincher!

I can't answer the OP's question, but I have a story that is somewhat relevant. When I was 10 or so, my brother and I bought Rambo-style knives from a friend who had picked them up, not surprisingly, at a flea market. My dad discovered them, and was pissed off -- not that we had purchased such large knives without permission, but that they were of such low quality. He pointed out how weak and dangerously they were constructed: the blade screwed into the hollow handle and was already coming loose, and that on a good knife the tang should run through the handle as one solid piece. He forced us to return them and I believe we got our cash back. It turned out to be a good educational experience.

practical? ...Irrellevant. In the immortal words of John J. Rambo " back there I was in charge of million dollar equipment... back here, I can't even get a job PARKING CARS"

P.S. I don't see why a well thought out "Rambo knife" wouldn't be practical... if done right

Only hollow handled knife I've ever tried is the Schrade SCHF2 (solid piece of 1070 carbon) that's patterned after the Chris Reeve knife...

... and only bought it after watching a torture vid in which the 2 were put through the same series of tests and the Reeve failed first. I won't even get into how stupid it is to destroy a knife like the CR.

Anyway, I took the driver and bits out of the handle and put some water purification tablets and Tylenol in there instead because the handle is water-tight with an o-ring... figure both of those would be more practical in a survival situation than the ability to work on my home electronics.

I've heard some good things about that one recently as well.

As for me, I have no "Rambo" knives, though I do have a couple hollow handles-Cold Steel Bushman and Bowie Bushman, Condor Matagi and Crocodilian, couple of Aranyiks, but all of them are all solid 1 pieces.

The entire movie was based on a man with PTSD who suddenly realizes he is alone in the world and loses it. I didn't mean to jump on you- some asshole on another forum had me riled up and I hastily read that and thought it was mocking something it wasn't. Apologies.

Noted, and graciously accepted. Your viewpoint on the movie is not unfamiliar to me. The first time i saw that movie the person encouraging me to see it only promoted it's violence and gun toting. By the end you feel sorry in your gut for the guy....

Guys, you can laugh today what, 25 years later? But the Buckmaster was legend.

Plus appearantly a lot of weed?

Well you could store a few rolled joints and some matches to fire em up inside the Randall handle. Or just keep your bowl and smokables on yourself and store your matches in the handle. Depends on the user. Maybe pills are your thing? Could store plenty of them inside. Right next to the fishing kit. Fishing kit and matches are very important, gonna get the munchies and need to catch some fish.

Ha... Yes, you cans store whatever "survival" supplies you want in there, matches, fishing line, hooks, med kit, snare wire, firesteel, any number of small items... and as brought up on more than one occasion, apparently an outstanding place to store your herbs.
the video posted earlier on here as well points out how "rugged" one of the hollow handle knives are and I agree, although they aren't my type of knife one could be made that was more than capable of doing whatever you needed a knife to do in a survival situation.

First Blood... it was the Sheriff's fault pushing Rambo's buttons. But yeah, I felt a little sorry for John Rambo at the end, but never felt sorry for the Sheriff.

I t was actually a pretty cool concept for a movie with the knife as a major "character". I can only think of McGyver where a knife played such a central role.
