Are the New Hinderer XM-18's worth the wait?

Congrats on the score WhitleyStu, I have absolutely no regrets on mine.

Well, I was saving up for an XM-18 myself until I happened across the nasty exchange in the custom knives for sale thread that took place a couple of days ago. I don't care how good the knife is, I simply cannot and will not support a maker that acts so unprofessional in a semi-public forum (in my opinion). :thumbdn:

I will be spending my money elsewhere, which is a bummer because the Kubatons were on my eventual "to get" list also.

I was just wondering if anyone notice the difference in the backspacers fasteners in Gen I,II,III. In Gen I the backspacers are bolted in buy nut & bolt and seem more heavy duty. In Gen II if you notice the bolt head is rounded and Gen III the bolt is flate. I'm just wondering if Rick compromised quality for somthing cheaper and mass produced.

I suppose you couldn't have asked about the differences without the insinuation of cheaper quality???????:barf:

I have been using mine in Iraq for 7 months and counting now. Its a 2nd generation. I have used it to cut open seed bags and clothes to look for caches and weapons, prying off locks for raids and clearance, MREs, 550 cord...its been scratched and banged up pretty good. I keep it clipped on my calf leg pocket. Its a great knife and no regrets on using it on its intended purpose.

I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of a USER Hinderer...TKC?

My gray one gets used the most, and before that, my blue one did. But, my gray one (and black one are with Rick for new clothes.)

Great knives, my large Gen 1 gets a ton of use. I am Ricks list for a small one and am looking forward to the day my number comes up. Steven

I am afraid the Xm's are becoming flavor of the week with people selling and buying them up in minutes. I unfortunately traded my 2nd gen recently and then felt I had made a mistake. I bit the bullet and bought an upgrade on that one (and it cost me!!).

I also got a 3rd gen from Blade 08 flipper and I am happy to say the quality and workmanship is still great.

Sort of hard thinking a $385 knife sells for anywhere from $500 and up.

I don't buy knifes I won't keep (well there are a couple of M2 BMs that may go), and my XM will go to the grave with me (probably along with a Case peanut).

I don't doubt that the XM-18 is an incredible knife, but just looking over at the FS forum, it now appears that there are two available from different sellers for the princely sum of $1100. That is almost a 300% increase from retail. Am I missing something here?

I was wondering the same thing........

I believe because those knives are 1st or 2nd Generation XM-18 with hand ground blades, and are now considered worth MORE than the third generation XM-18's as Rick is having the blades ground else where.

I think the ultra rare all ti XM is worth 1K +, not them ones that are in the exchange now. Time will tell.

....The XM-18 is and was designed as a hard use working knife. Due to the fact that the demand for these from our military and law enforcement customers was outstripping my ability to supply them I decided to have a shop grind the blades. I want to be able to supply our troops plain and simple.

The quote speaks for itself.

Someday the market will correct itself...the same way that it did with Emerson(to some degree), Onion's, Mayo's...and maybe Walker's(I mean, Walker knives have sold for $50,000+, lotta'$$$)

Until then, anyone paying a very high premium will be purchasing what was intended as a USING knife at an irrationally bloated price.

As using knives at maker price, the III's are no better or worse than the earlier models.

Best Regards,
