Are you a Benchmade or a Spyderco type of person?

They seem only about money and I think they're able to get it because they just keep punching out one after another. -That, and people get the idea that the Spyderco company really cares for them. With Spyderco, they speak with people on different forums, and if you're a luck "Spyder-zombie", you might even get to chat with Sal Glesser. -Wow!!!
Like I said, to me. the way Spyderco runs it's bussiness is a joke. But guys love knives that are real sharp out of the box, and they like to be in contact with thier God. -Oh. I Say Glesser.
.

What a pleasant fellow.

I love my Rift and the LFTi I picked up today but I'm a huge fan of the pink Native I bought my GF to where I bought my father a Delica 4 for father's day and my new brother in law (USCG) a Pacific Salt. I will probably end up with a Spyderco Gayle Bradley at some point.

Spyderco. Para-Military, and Military.

same but opposite knife situation as you. ive owned many spydercos and benchmades, the benchmades are all gone and i want more spydercos than i can afford.

I think they both make some great knives. I have more Spyderco than Benchmade but if had to choose would likely side with Benchmade. I am 57 years old with two kids and three grandkids. Favorite Spydercos are the Parmilitary, Manix and the mini Wegner. Favorite Benchmades are the Eliswitch Mini Stryker and the mini Griptilian. However, in the last few years I have gone back to traditional slipjoints. If I carry a one hander it is usually the Benchmade mini Griptilian.

I'm 22, active, spend a lot of time fishing/being in the woods/shotgunning beers with my knives. I'm not sure I agree with your theory. For me, fit and finish have been equal for both companies, and materials used have all been quality. I feel that my Sage is a better slicer, due to the flat grind. However, my 950 is definitely better suited for beating the tar out of and prying. No brand preference for me, only design/function preference. There's a ton of Benchmades I wouldn't want to own, and there's a ton of Spydercos that seem just as unappealing.

used to be BMs only till I came to my senses. Especially after my last couple came with no edge.

WHen it comes to folders, Spyderco is all I buy for the most part.

I think I'm more of a Spyderco sort of person.

It really does mean a lot to me that Sal posts on the various forums regularly. I also get the sense that Spyderco likes its customers more, and that the knives seem more intended to be actually used.

Benchmade's largest draw for me previously was the Benchmade 42 and the rest of their full sized solid metal balisongs, but their recent discontinuation has caused prices to skyrocket to the point where I won't be able to own one for years.

How the hell age or marital status would effect a knife-company choice?!
First of all all knives are different. If I were offered a crap BM or a good Spydie, I'd go Spyderco, or Vice versa. I can't even believe so many people are still beating that dead horse! (BM.vs.Spyderco)
Both are good knife companies, yet one is going up in price and down in quality, while the other is going down in price and up in quality and innovation. So, Spyderco definitely for me! I just love how they keep it real, functional, and sharp!

Besides, you don't see any Spyderco models with a thumb stud, do you now?! While BM seems to really dig that hole lately....:jerkit:

I've got a few Spyderco's and zero Benchmade's so I guess I'm more a Spyderco type of person.

Truthfully? I like most BM's more as far as design is concerned, but their build quality varies more than Spyderco, which brand I find fascinating in that respect. Spyderco is ALWAYS immaculate in my experience, I haven't seen that in any other main brand.

I do own more BM's, because their designs appeal more to me. I would like Spyderco to make a more beefy folder, comparable to the Rukus let's say, but there are at least 3 or 4 Spyderco's on my shortlist. I recently ordered the BM MPR, which reduced the BM shortlist to just one. ;)

So I have no real preference, in spite of my 47 years, 2 kids, 2 cars, only 1 wife, dozens and dozens of knives of all brands, a handful of firearms and a relatively boring but well-paying job.

I am however still holding my breath for this knife. :D A Police 3 G-10 with Chinese DNA. That one will make my day, hell, it'll make my month!

I don't like brands, I love knifes !

I'm with this guys.

People whine too much about brands. Bunch of fanboys! Sal Glesser seems to be a class act. And some benchmades look amazing.

However some benchmades look horrid and are WAY overpriced.

Some Spyderco's look amazing and other make me want ot hide under a blanket (that Spyderco Captain really is a monstrosity).

Each company has something to say for them and each has a number of cons as well.

Why worry about brands when you can worry about knives?

-Asian male 33
-Married, 2 kids
-2 years merchant navy
-10 years in the Singapore Police Coast Guard
-4 years as an elementary school teacher (till present)
-Wife is a CPA who earns twice as much as me (nobody gets rich teaching)
-Own a house, no car as it's too expensive here
-Lifelong love for angling (deep sea, inshore and jungle fishing)
-Love camping and trekking and the wife indulges me
-70 odd knives comprising of BMs, Spydercos, CRKTs (all sold recently), Kershaws, Bokers and Victorinox.
-About 10 BMs, 40 Spydercos with the other brands and customs making up the difference.
-Love BMs as collector and carry pieces pieces but for users, only Spydercos
-Favorite BM, large Skirmish
-Favorite Spyderco, Calypso CF

I like them all... But I prefer Spydercos as they do make value for money knives which are more available. I'd love to get more Kershaws if not for their preference for assisted knives. BMs make visually appealing knives but I won't say Spydies are all fugly, just a different kind of cool. All good, just different.

Well, next month I'll start collecting SSI benefits. Added to my teacher's retirement, I'll still be in the lower income range - no William Henrys or Sebenzas here. I do have to make my knife purchases count, too, as I seem to be a bit of a 'knife-hoarder'. They come in - but never leave my collection!

I started with SAKs Bucks - razors right out of the box. Seven plus years ago, I diversified my collection - Kershaws (Razors!) and a BM 551 Grip (Needed to be heated to cut butter!). Five years later, I tried another BM -- a 201 - same story - dull! My wife bought me a Spydie Native in S30V from Wally World - a steal at <$40. Great EDC. I got a second one within a year - as they were canned at W-W. I was really impressed with the quality and ergonomics - and USA provenance. I bought a Spydie Sharpmaker after that first Native - bad move - the two BMs were about to be sharpened!

No longer 'scared' of a dull knife, I've bought fifteen BMs in the last sixteen months. Oddly, only the 710 (D2) wasn't a razor out of the box, although it would pop an occasional arm hair. I was fortunate enough to find some older stock - from the '04 Catalog I had - still in stock at my local pusher's lair - at old prices - which they made deals on to get rid of (I am frugal...). I've also bought new BMs - last year's 760BK L-Ti and this year's 755 MPR - super-keepers both. I guess I am a BM-lover!

One day, I'll get another Spydie - a Military, probably. I like US-made, of course. Can't fault 'the hole' in the blade - I love my BM 630/635 Skirmish family. I guess I just haven't given Spydies a good test. I like knives - guess I'll keep 'trying' other brands. I still love my Bucks and Kershaws, too.

For years I was a diehard BM fan, but lately have been buying Spydercos. The cost of BM's had skyrocketed lately. I still like BM's, but feel you get more bang for your buck with Spyderco. The last 5 knives I purchased were Spydies.

I think brand loyalty is fine - but a question we could all ask ourselves, which might be more salient, is, If you could only have one knife from your collection, what would it be? Would it be a Spydie or a BM?

Make mine curtain #3 - I'd keep a Buck 110! Historically, I've done more with one of those - in basic 420HC - than any other knife. Just a thought.
