Are You A HOG?. . . .

When I think about the best way to answer Jery's Question

Are You A HOG?. . . .

I think of that foolish commercial.

NO, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Well i dun know when your a hog, just bring on the ash-1 w000000000t

Atleast 1 to pamper 1 for the show and 1 for the road :D:thumbup:

Bring it!!! and ill take it applies here

Well you know I get all serious about this kind of thing.

To me this group is a lot like the bicycle club that I have been a member of since 1992. To me that club is extended family and in a way so is this Busse forum; and I get kind of picky about family.

But for what it is worth my opinion is much like it is for new racers that want to join my club. It is all about the person being a good fit in the family and if they will contribute and not be a royal pain in the azz for the club’s board to deal with. We don’t really care about how good they are on a bike, just that they are good people.

I agree.

BTW, Tony. We've been meaning to tell you - you just don't fit in like family, so, you know. . . ROTFL!!!

I know people have heard the phrase "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

To me, I care nothing about what someone calls me -- HOG, piglet, newb., whatever. What I DO care about are the people here in this forum and behind the scenes, the great blades that Busse puts out, the tremendous customer service, and using what I have (including giving others a chance to use them in many cases). I try to be helpful when someone has a question, and patient when someone has a hard time understanding or accepting the Busse family of knives and everything they have to offer. Still, I appreciate a good trampling to the trough as well, and I am no worse for the wear. But in my mind, that is just me being me. :)

Chris

I figured you had to have a few hoof marks on your back before you made Hog. :) Or waited a complete '2 weeks' for a knife (ordered my SS on the day of release and its a CG).

I like the idea of levels. If you were going to stay with calling all inductees a HOG, maybe you could create distinguishing groups of swine (ie. Collection= Hordin' Hog, people who are extremely helpful= Helpin' Hog, Mass Buyer= Hungry Hog). If it were based on collections, it would be difficult to estimate a "HOGs" value. Many of us trade, sell and buy again off the radar.
Best of luck in your decision.

+1 -:thumbup: Outstanding! Reading through the posts, thinking of what to post, and I got to OTEs post. I can't add anything else.

Well said, sir.

Now, back to scheming over Knob Creek trough plans...

I say anyone who has owned, used and liked a Busse has a bit of the Hog in them. But most bloody certainly the Big Hogs are those guys who have ten pounds of INFI stockpiled. :D

Just ten pounds? I qualify:D

Unfortunatley not everyone can keep up with the shear # of pieces that some have. I am not a inducted hog so i dont know if I could say exactly what makes you one. I think getting to blade and meeting everyone woud give one a better idea if its something they are.

I certainly think its a mindset though.

Being a HOG is definitely a state of mind thing. Being called one assured HOG status, but in the end, if you feel a need for more, you're a HOG.

Wow. A 1:35 AM post and 31 replies (32 now) already.

I think Hogwash is right. If everyone would simply get their girlfriends to pose nude with their knives, then we'd have ourselves a group of HOGs.

It occurs to me that one criteria might be that you've looked long and hard for that Busse that is no longer made. Almost anyone, with a little effort, can score blades at BCS or (even easier) order them from the Shop. But you have to be really devoted to find a Busse that is highly sought after and is no longer produced. It requires getting to know people here, doing considerable networking, and being persistent. Then... striking as soon as the opportunity arises. I love some of the knives I got from the Shop, but some of my most prized Busses are the ones I had to really work for.

Guyon, you wrote:

Well stated. I agree 100%.

I like the idea of the personal induction to become a HOG. Makes it a quest. ;)

Maybe there should be a list of Porker's -- uninducted but proven HOG-like individuals who qualify to get the HOG Special ASH-1.

:D

I agree that Hogness is a state of mind, or a desire, to be a HOG.
I am reminded of this when I break out my Busses to show friends
and I begin to explain them and the community here and I get that
look that says, "Oh dear, you're more insane than we thought......"
There is a select group of people that want to be HOGS and I think
that counts for a great deal.

As far as qualifications go, the one thing that I think makes a Hog a
Hog is helping out other Hogs
. More than how much Infi you own, I
think this sets Hogs apart. When I first got onto the forums here and began asking
questions, JimmyJones PMed me with a super kind gesture to help
me get my first piece of Infi. That, to me, is what being a Hog is about.
That is what makes this community special.

So, I would propose a system by which guys/gals nominate people that they
think should be HOGs......that have helped them out, been super cool in communication,
have gone above and beyond what most most people would do for a person.
I think there are a lot of guys/gals that have done some really cool things for each
other that no one knows about.

It is hard to qualify Hogdom, but this is what stands out to me.

I humbly suggest some factors that might help determine an individual's Hog status:

1) Time spent on the forums, at the company store, and researching Busse in general.

2) Percentage of disposable income spent on Busse knives.

3) Number of times you've had to replace keyboards because the "F5" button has worn out.

4) Number of times you've lied to your spouse about how much you spent on a knife.

5) Participation in "real world" Busse events- not just computer-based. Distance traveled to reach said events is a contributing factor, as is time taken off from work.

6) The nature and quality of your participation in the Busse community- whether you're a stand-up guy (or gal) or a complete tool.

7) Do you dream about Busse knives? Frequently?

8) Number of Busse knives you have physically on your person as you read this. (If it's more than 2, you may need some help)

I was actually going to link to a thread where we did that on the Busse Combat home forum but I can't seem to see anything there older than August 12th? :o

. . . Well, I suppose that anything is possible!!!
As we prepare for the intro of the ASH 1 we find ourselves struggling to define the term HOG. . .
Being an inducted HOG will definitely have its benefits. . ..
Could it be that merely having an affection and small collection of Busse Blades makes you a HOG?
Could it be that everyone who owns at least one Busse Combat blade has a little bit of HOG in him or her?
Should we set parameters on the number or value of someone's collection in order to reach Hogdom?
Should there be several different levels of Hogdom such as "Piglet", "Oinker", "Alpha Boar", and "Old Guard HOG"???. . . .
Can I ever be drunk enough to figure this out on my own?
Oink at me Hogs. . . . tell me what you think!
I should be good and hammered by tomorrow night when I finally come to a decision. . . .

Let's drink! :thumbup:Jerry
:D.

contribution to the brotherhood of your fellow hogs, and you will know your a hog when you find a small opening in the trough, made possible by your fellow oinkers.... you will feel the quickening.

NO REGRETS ! ! !

Maybe we should go by the nomination system.
If you can get 2 HOGs to nominate you, you're in.
Just a thought.

OR
Maybe a minimum number of "I'll TAKE IT!"s from the for sale area! :D

I dunno if I have Hog status. I can put this board down and new Busse's at any time. Really. If you all fell off the face of the earth, eh, too bad for all'y'all. LOL Really. You guys are a bunch of crack-ups, but it's still all just ones and zeros. (Which is maybe why HOGS should be required to hit Blade. Because without inauguration, we are all just still ones and zero's. For all we know, most of you could be 14 yr old girls.)

But I've got my SHSH. So based on difficulty scale (and the deal I got), I guess that qualifies me.

In reality, what's it really get you to be "officially" a HOG? I keep thinking of the silent tens or hundreds that don't post here but keep takin all them blades I want off of Ebay and other places. Gaggles of "HOGS" out there that don't even come up on radar around here. Esp. the ones circling the Busse wagon at Blade.

That's my opinion. The long and short of it is: You gotta go to a Jerry Busse attended show. And I'll likely never do that and I'm OK with that.
