Are you late with your 2008 Christmas Exchange knife...?

If you want your postal delivery person to hate you, schedule them for residential pickup :D That would be an interesting site seeing a huge pile of boxes sitting in front of your house!

LOL, this is just what I was thinking when reading his post.:D

I WILL be in he next XMAS exchange.I loved making and recieving a knife.

In fact it made the past xmas very exciting for me.Unlike they had been in the past,i was like a kid waiting for xmas to finally get here.

I'll be in again. The idea of sending the knives to you sounds fine, except that it's yet more work for you.

I can not wait for the next Chrstmas Exchange! This year was my first exchange and I was like a kid all over again. I loved the knife I recieved and can not believe that anyone would not come through delivering a knife unless there was a death, loss of limb or major financial issue.

As a recommendation, maybe there should be a qualifier for any new person. Maybe someone who can vouch for their character should have to nominate them. There needs to be a way to eliminate a person who just signs up for the forum for the opportunity to get a new knife and not return the favor.

That's not a bad idea, I guess. There is the feedback system here, would that count? As I said earlier, I will make sure I have a knife ready before I commit. Perhaps sending pics of the finished piece to Scott would count as being ready?

I do not mind shipping the knife to you Scott at all and not really worried about he extra shipping costs. What does bother me is all the extra work you would have to do to keep this going. That is not fair in my book. Maybe you could limit participation to members with say 100 posts and ones that completed the exchange before with no problems. Maybe that would help to keep the bad ones from getting in. I would think if a person has been here long enough to get a hundred or so posts then they are not here to grab a quick knife and take off. But then I have been wrong before. Just trying to find a way to keep all of this extra work off of you Scott. Personally I think you are very gracious to offer to keep doing this.

I somehow agree with you about the post count limit, but the narrowing the participation to those who have already done it before... somehow kills the spirit of the knife exchange.

We still have time to work out a better way to make this exchange. Maybe instead of sending the knife to Scott, we could just send him a picture of our ready-to-send knife with a recent newspaper. That won't prevent the truly bad ones who just want to grab a knife and run (they could always send a real picture of a real knife and not send it afterwards) but it will surely prevent those I-AM-TOO-BUSY-TO-MAKE-THE-PROMISED-KNIFE cases from happening.

Mikel, sorry about the miscommunication there. I did not mean to limit the exchange to only ones that have done it before, but use both methods. Anyone that had successfully completed an exchange and anyone with over say 100 posts could join in on the KITH. But it was just an idea to try and take some of the burden of Scott and still keep the KITH alive. It really is a shame that we have to do this. To bad people just can't live up to their word and make life easy for everyone. But that is another topic altogeher.

I've never done the gift exchange because I don't think my knives are at a level that they warrant trade with some of the gifted makers we have here. But I always read the thread and enjoy the pictures. I'm sorry to hear of these issues, and hope there is an exchange this Christmas.

Andy, you don't have to be a "gifted" maker to get in on the exchange...all levels of makers are in it. I'm by no means a "gifted" maker, and I've done the exchange both times. I sincerely hope that there is another exchange and that we see your name in it. Make no mistake, Andy, your knives kick serious butt!

How ever this years exchange goes, I'm in! I've already been sketching a few ideas and might be able to get something good soon. In other words, I'm already thinking ahead so it will be done on time! :p -Matt-

I have been looking forward to this years exchange as I wouldn't have been ready for it last year. I think Scott's idea of a "knife in the Hat" would work well, but I also echo the notion of that being a lot of work for him. It is disappointing that there were problems last year, but a few bad apples never ruined an orchard. I know there are plenty of good people here that will keep their word, and I'm not deterred from participating this year.

They do. And they definitelly are better than the crappy ass knife-like thangs I am able to carve out of leaf springs :D :D. Mi home made micarta kicks ass though... lol.

I am sure you are more than up to the task. I will surely enjoy getting one of your blades in the next Christmas Exchange.

Mikel

I very much enjoyed this years exchange. As you get older the neckties and socks lose their appeal but a knife never gets old. Now if I can just convince the necktie givers that not only have I stopped wearing them but I'd prefer a knife.
Also working to get my 100 posts in before the deadline.

I beg to differ there. I love the piece that you made this year.

Your kidding us right??? You make some really nice knives. I sure as heck would not be offended to receive one!

I appreciate the kind words guys. Maybe I'll put one together for this year's exchange. (Time to start now, obviously...)

Makes me very happy to hear you say that again, Alex! :D

Sometimes it's hard to remember that just because I make a lot of mistakes, doesn't mean that it's a "bad knife" in the end. It's just harder to appreciate my own work, because I'm acutely aware of all the stuff that went wrong. I guess it's all part of the journey...making the best knife you can with what abilities and equipment you have. Thanks again. -Matt-

Good point. The customer sees only the finished product... we remember the scraped knuckles, goofs we had to fix, etc etc :D

Sorry for the drift... (I should just put that in my sig line :o)

It was probibly the most exciting Christmas in about 10 years for me. Will definitly be doing it again in whichever form it takes place. But there must be an easier way then to do an 80+ person KITH. I mean, checking, re-boxing and shipping 80+ knives? you did enough work this time around. What if we just setup guidelines relating to you either being a trusted and legitimate member, or have the backing of one.

I have seen your work via your web-site, if your stuff is more than good enough!!!!! Take a shot.
Anyone here would be excited to get one of your knives
