I was reading an article where Odie Tucker of SSI Data ("company that tracks the sales of guns, accessories, and knives across multiple channels") was quoted:

"Knife sales in the first quarter of 2016 are down significantly versus a year ago. There are many more losers than winners in the knife category."

Are your personal knife purchases 2016 year-to-date less than the same period in 2015?

Personally, it's true for me. I'm much more selective now since I'm staying away from the under $100 knives. I think it partly has to do with MAP enforcement of Benchmade in late 2014, Zero Tolerance in late 2015 and Spyderco since January 2016.

I'm continuing a trend of fewer, but nicer, purchases. I may actually be spending more, but it's close.

To date, Im about even thanks to ZTs amazing 2016 lineup!! Im about done on buying for the year though so I think by the end of 20016 I'll be down from last year.

Yes, but only because I'm getting married this September. After that it's game on!

No because the knives I bought this year were more expensive than in the past. I try to limit myself to one knife a year, but purchased two this year after selling a few.

Not sure if the poll question is so directly related to the cited quarterly data. I am buying about the same but mostly on the used market. I've bought less than 5 new knives so far this year. I'm not necessarily spending about the same because my collection is at the point that new purchases are funded through selling unused knives.

Yes, but that is about to change. I am attending Blade this year for the first time. I am bringing more cash to spend that weekend than I spent on knives all of last year.

I'm not sure if anyone agrees with me but I find that prices on knives is becoming more and more expensive and to the point where it's almost ridiculous. I mean how much do the materials really cost to ask $200-$300 for production brand mid tech knives. I know manufacturers are using better steels but cmon, it can't be that much more. Prices for knives are becoming close to the same as buying a quality firearm and there is way more moving parts and materials used in making a firearm. If I'm looking at a new concealed carry pistol at $400 or a small piece of steel on a handle for $300, 9 out of 10 times I'm going to add another firearm to my collection instead. I still buy them but I'm having a harder time lately swallowing the cost of some of these knives, and I've gone from never buying used knives to spending more on second hand unused or lightly used examples instead of paying 30-50% more for the same knife from the dealer. Let's face it, as soon as you put it in your pocket and cut something it's used anyway so why not save some money and just start that way. As an example I just bought a new Benchmade 698 Foray. I loved the look of this knife and had to have it so I bucked up and paid $200 with the shipping to own it. Well I'm cruising thru the classifieds here and I'm seeing these knives being put up for sale at $130-$140 in new unused condition. Now I would think that a new knife on the market this year would hold its value a little better, but in reality $130-$140 is probably what the knife should sell for from the manufacturer in the first place.

I am sure this is playing a part in why business is down. That's not to say that people won't get used to it and numbers will rise again, but for me especially I'm just amazed at how much it cost to buy a very small slice of steel with a slab of handle material on it. I think it's time for prices to level off and even come down a bit.

Less.

All these years enjoying this hobby, and all the amazing knives I've had a chance to use has really given me a wonderful perspective on exactly what I like in a knife.

So, now that I've figured that out, I am staying within that framework....

Actually I've never spent so much in knives.
Mostly because I've stop spending money on guns and ammunition. Prices are now so high in Canada, I'm not willing to pay 30% more for just about everything that goes bang. I'm glad I was able to get mostly all I wanted in the previous years.
I am more than happy to fuel again my lifelong passion for knives. But I'm catching up fast and I'm going to reduce my expenses pretty soon, after I'll get a couple more (dozens) of pieces.
I'm also more an user than a true collector.

golf1,
I hear you, the prices are starting to go beyond what I'm willing to shell out. Saving for a rifle right now. More bang for the buck (pun intended)

JR88FAN,
I'm just about there myself. I like what I have for the most part. Will upgrade only by selling for awhile

Well said. That's my goal. Almost there.

I'm all but done buying knives at this point! I am very happy where my collection is at this time. I may tweak a few things but it will be doubtful.

My funny money fund is dried up as well so that helps with silly impulsive purchasing!

One of the reasons for the disparity in price between brand new and on the classifieds for the BM you mentioned is Benchmade's MAAP pricing. While dealers have to sell for the MAAP price, the secondary market isn't tied to those restrictions so buyers won't pay that even if the knife is in new condition.

I am buying considerably fewer knives but they are more expensive. While I am finding solid value in the fixed blades I've purchased this year, prices of folders seem to be through the roof. The asking price of a Sebenza now seem reasonable.

I'm probably the same, or possibly a little more. I'm buying way less quantity of knives, but spending much more per knife.

Startin out with just 2 news ones since January but goin for a small collection of quality knives with good steels and knives that serve a different purpose for hunting, survival, and defense. So far I acquired 2 Bucks, 1 Puma from my youth, and a Sog but room for a couple more. Great to get opinions here from the pros and ask about a knife one is considering.

Spending waaaaay more this year. And I just registered for the gathering #8 in Las Vegas. Yes, I will be buying a few more masterpiece.
