ARK knife. I find the need for this disturbing

I own an ARK. I own or have owned eight or nine neck knives. Some of these are/were very nice knives, but as a pure neck knife, the ARK works best. It's light, small, rust-proof, stays in the sheath, and is easy to withdraw from the sheath. It's the only one of the neck knives I've owned that has had all these features. And even though it is designed to be a neck knife, with some properly place paracord, it fits nicely on a belt, too. Thanks for coming up with this knife, and thanks for the video.

Forgot to mention, it feels good in my hand, too.

The vid is BASIC knife défense and, to me, demonstrates very easy and useful methods to use the ARK.... Or many other knives out there. Simple, instinctive, and mostly non lethal.

That being said, I'm not buying this knife for any self defense use. I've always carried pocket knives as a kid/teenager. Got into more than one scrape. Never even thought of using my knife. I'm seeing it as a fixed blade alternative to a pocket knife.

I've got 2 on the way .... :)

Muchblade, I think Spyderco did a great job of making a genuinely good neck knife, as opposed to some other "neck" knives that are really better suited for belt carry.

NF, thank you. I think many people have the idea that winning with a knife involves killing an adversary. My hope for the ARK is that using it defensively will keep the user safe from serious harm, including rape. The attacker doesn't have to be dead for the defender to win, and in fact killing the attacker may mean closing the distance, making the defender more vulnerable. I will point out, though, that long shallow cuts can be deadly in very little time, due to massive blood loss.

The reasons that created this knife make me sick.

This knife was created to generate revenue for Spyderco and Mr. Sal. And that's a good thing, because revenue incentivizes Mr. Sal to keep making his cool stuff so we can keep buying it and posting pics of it on Bladeforums.

This knife is a lot like those paracord bracelets that we see so much of. Both are just man jewelry that will never get used for survival. This knife, like virtually all neck knives, will be used - if at all - to open letters and Amazon packages.

Will some bad person get their neck slashed open with this knife? Eh, anything is possible, but probably not.

Imagine the average guy who buys this knife. He wears it under his shirt - with his paracord bracelet on his wrist - while he drives his Kia to his 2nd shift job at Home Depot. Then he comes home, opens the mail with his fingers, remembers the neck knife and wishes he had used it to open the mail because it would have been fun. Then he gets on Bladeforums and talks about it with other guys who love their toys as much as he does.

There is plenty of stuff to get sick about, like drunk driving deaths or kids who need foster parents. But I don't think that neck knives should make us sad. I'm guessing that for almost everyone who buys one, its mostly just a fun knife to play with.

This week, I know Bento Box sent an ARK to two Sailors who are deploying again soon to Afghanistan, and another to a Soldier at KAF. "Slashing necks with an ARK" is not its designed purpose.

I am going to be buying the ARK for a son-in-law cop. The price, the idea, the company, the designers, the CEO, are all great.
The thoughtless remarks made by one fellow did serve to greatly PUBLICIZE this product, and will likely lead to increased sales and greater protection for some of our heroes.

Buy your son-in-law the Spyderco P'kal. It's made in the USA, designed by LEO, with almost perfect execution. It was made for the real world, not ladies in showers :)

I am still not sure where the "ladies in showers" idea comes from. 8 out of 10 raped service members are male...and I'm pretty sure that unfortunately is the real world.

If it helps our service men and women not get raped in the shower while serving in sketchy areas, I'm all for it.

Thumbs up to Sal and others for seeing the need and making the product available.

This is a free marketplace, and I don't see any problem with Spyderco making a profit from the sale of their products.

Attacks in restrooms and showers are a relatively common thing in general, be it in connection to rape, robbery or whatever. The victim is in a vulnerable position and there are no surveillance cameras for obvious reasons. Nothing strange about finding a need to protect oneself against that. Spyderco and the designers of the knife did a really good job on the ARK knife IMO. Great little concealable knife for whatever purpose you want it for and I'm sure it would perform great for it's intended use as well.

Sorry, my point was that the P'kal is probably a better choice as a backup for a LEO. Service men being raped in showers is a hard concept to wrap one's head around. I know lots of deployed contractors, female and male,
and rape is not a problem in their world.

I do agree a quickly accessible fast folder is a better choice for anyone wearing clothes.

I got a lot of my information from a service member friend who was deployed at the same time, and who had access to threat reports theater-wide. Just because your friends aren't aware of it doesn't mean it's not an issue- it just means your friends aren't aware of it. I knew nothing of it on my first deployment, either. A friend at SAIC said reported rapes in theater are at least 200 a year, with unreported believed to be much higher. (I am of course not referring to the local polulation at all, since there are thousands of rapes in Afghanistan every day, mostly to children.)
