ARK knife. I find the need for this disturbing

The reason given for a blunt tip knife is to avoid injuring yourself or another when having to cut out of the kayak. IIIRC someone's femoral artery was accidently pierced during extrication from a kayak with a ponty blade but I just read and don't kayak except in a lake after dinner :). But it could be for rivers, Benchmade has a blunt tip blade for rivers.

I should have my ARK H-1 neck knife next week all for $54! Initially, I thought it was going to be VG-10 but H-1 definitely steps it up so that it's always on you.

Ordered 2 for 109. One as a gift for a Marine. Even if I think he can handle himself very well against any rapist a knife which is there all the time can be useful for other things as well.

Well, I'm hoping to take one on my ocean kayaking trip the first week of June (my handmade one is 440C, rust resistant but not H1, and space will be at a premium).

The ARK should make an excellent kayak knife. I have taken to wearing a Swick around my neck and love the design. Its on the ocean with me 4-5 days a week and though I am able to keep the rust off of it with some care, but an H1 option for fixed blade neck carry is welcome.

G'day Spectre,

Tragic reason to design a knife. Great design. Will get more than one.... Nice little EDC fixed blade, great as a gift.
Spyderco will make $ with it.... So what. No one should expect them to give the knives away. Let Spyderco offer a discount on them for the military if they wish. All is good either way.

I've owned Spyderco blades since the mid 1990's. Don't see the day that I won't own one. I'm not a "fan boy". I just know great, useful, designs when I see them.

Kudos to you, Sal, and the Spyderco crew.

You are absolutely right. It's heartbreaking that anyone could be so callously selfish as to be willing to victimize anyone for their own pleasure. We are fortunate to not see as much of it in the US, but rape is extremely common in some countries, with rape of boys being even more common than girls in some Middle Eastern countries.

I do always hope Spyderco makes a profit, because otherwise, they won't be able to keep being the great company we love. I say this as a longtime knife lover who occasionally buys a knife from another company, and then, always gives it away in a few weeks (my handmade knives from Sam being the exception, of course, but then, I've helped design all of those).

I do want to again point out that Sam Owens was a vital part of this process, too. While I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted the ARK to look like, finding the right angle of handle to blade happened through Sam making a bunch of G10 models and putting them in people's hands. Also, Sam is a true craftsman, and I think the two of us are even better working together...and he's just an incredible guy, and a great friend.

John

Here are some simple ways to use the ARK defensively:https://youtu.be/f50iSHjStJU

My word, that was classic!

I've previously opted out of this thread due to the thin skinned nature of some of you here, but after several messages from others pointing out they agree with me but were less inclined to openly voice that opinion (again due to the defensive nature of some of you) I feel I absolutely must chime in, if not just for the reality check.

Firstly, and I do mean this as constructive criticism and not a personal dig (you'll get this pun in a few seconds lol). Don't use a potato to film future videos. There are better subterranean vegetables with far superior picture quality.

Secondly, where did you learn your knife combat 'techniques'? At the shortass and/or amputee convention?.. LOL! (seriosuly bro, that giant had two arms, both of which would be elbow deep in you if he wanted them to be.)

Thirdly, as much as I enjoyed the comedy gold that has just freely flown from my finger tips..and an agonisingly painful herniated gut from the reaction of your video, I would like for you to know that the knife looks good, and I'm sure a completely rust proof knife will come in handy to many out there. ( See that, no sarcasm!)

Fourthly, Please make another video!!!11!!oneone!1won!1win :D

Peace.

SMH...

Amazing how a little ignorance, combined with internet anonymity brings out the "best" in some people...

To tell the truth I'm pretty disgusted. I think its good people dare question business decisions, but the way it was done here was somewhat sickening. Also I don't think the video was made for ninjas of your level, but simply for an untrained person to get the F&#* away not win a knife fight.

On topic, I see its slightly bigger than I originally thought, I may get one as a rust proof neck knife.

The whole point of the ARK is to give a defensive option to people who may be attacked, and the safest, most intuitive way to resist these attacks is to cut the arm or hand that's grabbing them.

Ive done admittedly quite limited blade training, but that was also what I was taught.

We will await your video on defensive use with small fixed blades then

Is there any training and instructions video? I know this knife is designed so that almost everyone can use it but some guidelines won't hurt. And will spyderco release a training model (like an endura with red handle).

I am going to be buying the ARK for a son-in-law cop. The price, the idea, the company, the designers, the CEO, are all great.
The thoughtless remarks made by one fellow did serve to greatly PUBLICIZE this product, and will likely lead to increased sales and greater protection for some of our heroes.

Very nice looking blade. Well done John and Sam. We in sunny South Africa will probably wait another two years before it will be available here but I will keep a sharp eye out for one.
