Arkansas Knife Show 2011-Show Us what you Got

Once again, my only regret in moving to the Northwest is being so far from some truly spectacular Knife Shows and blade makers... I will have to make a point of trying to get to the Arkansas show one of these years soon...
Thanks to all of you for sharing some truly amazing work for those of us who won't make it!!!

I hope you do make it down Joe. It's really a fun show.

It looks like Charlie and I will not be able to make the show after all. Some family issues have come up and it is not a good time for us to be that far from home. The Little Rock show is one of our favorite shows from both sides of the table and we would not miss it if we didn't have to. I really wanted to see that hunter that Don showed.

Hope everybody has a great show and a safe trip both there and home.

Harry & Charlie

Harry, sorry you guys won't make it. See you at Blade.

Here's my last one. See y'all tomorrow evening.

Don, that will make a great little carry knife.
Looks similar to the one you had at Jerry's.

I visited the show today and looked around. I am just an average guy looking at some of the knives and not a collector or anything. I did see one knife that I liked, but I was with my son and never made it back by the table and forgot about it until right now. Does anyone have a table diagram and the exhibitors listed by where they were.

I also really appreciate Ray Kirk for spending time with me to answer my questions about his knife. Everyone was very friendly and made sure it was enjoyable for my little boy as well.

Don, Roger and Kevin, Charlie and I appreciate your comments. We really hated missing the show but we had some family issues come up that kept us away. Things have turned out ok, but I am glad we passed on this years show. See you at the Blade Show.

Hasn't been too bad here though...The push dagger has been sold (again) and two of the hunters we were taking have sold with the possibility of one more hunter selling this week. A couple of the others will fill orders outstanding. Not too bad for not driving 13 hours each way, paying for Hotel rooms and eating out each night, but it isn't the same as being there. We found a seafood restaurant last year that we were both looking forward to visiting one more time to see if it was really as good as we thought it was or were we just hungry. Next year!

I hope some of you guys took a camera, got some pictures and maybe will do a review of the show like Roger did last year. We donated a Bowie to the Arkansas Knifemakers Association that I think was going to be used in a drawing. It would be great to see a picture of whoever got it. This is the knife we donated.

Hope everyone had a great show! We will see you there next year.

Harry - I did see the knife - very nice! I left before the drawing, though, so I don't know who the lucky recipient was. Family comes first and I'm sure you made the only choice you could - I'm glad things turned out okay. Show review coming soon
Irhogfan - sorry, don't have a floor plan - but if you can describe the maker and knife and who else was nearby, maybe we can figure it out.

Roger

As you walk in to the show, you would pay. Turn to the left and walk past the display of donated knives for drawing. Keep walking down that aisle and it was all the way down on the right. The last table on the right. There was a nice little folder (or what appeared to be a folder). I looked at it and could not figure out how it closed and the wife of the displayer said to come back and her husband would be able to help. I never made it back to the table and forgot to get a business card from the gentleman or his wife.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Irhogfan, That would have been Roger Massey. He is from Texarkana, AR. His contact information is on the ABS website. It is under the Mastersmith list in the makers section. Just click on his name and it will bring up his info.

That's Roger Massey - and the folder was a slipjoint.

His number is 870-779-1018. Great guy, super-clean knives.

Don glad to see you had a safe trip home, it was good seeing you, Roger, Paul and a whole bunch of others. I didn't get to talk to Kevin, every time I went by the ckca table he was either busy or off somewhere else, and when he came by my table, well I was off somewhere else. We really enjoy that show because its not real big and its easy to visit with everyone and there's sure a great bunch of people there. PLUS it was really nice to see some ground with no snow on it.

The Arkansas Show is always a treat and this year's was certainly one to remember. My hat is off to Chuck Ward, David Etchison and The Arkansas Knifemaker's Association for putting on such a top quality event.

Back in sunny Florida, from the "Greatest show on Earth," or at least the greatest in Little Rock! Wonderful show, big, big crowd this year, saw all the guys, you shoulda been there.

Now to bed, it's past midnite.

John

Back in sunny Florida,

John; I guess it's quicker to fly to Florida than it is to drive to Kansas. You posted this about the same time that I got home. :)

I think this was the best AKA Show that I have ever attended. Congrat's to all of the folks who helped to put this event on.

I also think that the knives displayed were overall the finest that I have seen at this show. Outstanding work by some of the country's top makers!!!!

I also have to say congratulations to the AKA bunch, Chuck, David, Lin, and everybody that make this show special. It is a really great opportunity to see top of the line knives and meet wonderful people. It is a weekend we always enjoy. So many friends to see. Thank you all again.

that bowie, Matthews Bros., is styled after my basic favourite pattern- flat guard, tapered stag handle and a clip, those proportions. I don't know where it came from, but that general design has been with me a long time. This rendition is a trigger, she definitely has made an impression on me as I've been back to see er several times already...

Yep Bill we missed one another. I really enjoyed seeing/handling your knives they were really fine. I think you could have sold that big stag fighter several times over. Liked how you used and filed the spacer at the butt cap.
The folders and big Ivory Bowies were very clean as well.

It was really a great show and I throughly enjoyed visiting with all you guys.
Very nice crowd.

Yep, that looks like the one. Really beautiful knife, wish I had the funds to buy it. At least now I know who makes it, so when I do find the funds, maybe I can get in touch with Roger.

Thanks

Lorien the design is one that dates from the late 1800's to early 1900's. It is termed a hunting knife design. Charlie has one of these small "hunter's Bowies" in his collection and when Lin asked Charlie if he would make a knife for the AKA, Charlie thought this design would be appropriate since we don't get to do that much forging anymore. It turns out Charlie's knife from the early 1900's has a stainless steel blade, so if fit right in with the CPM S30V we like to use. I hope whoever got it likes it. Here is another picture for you showing the sheath that came with it.

Harry,
I notified the new owner this afternoon and he's pretty excited. Holler at me by email and we'll talk more about it if you like. Thank you and Charlie, because we know you both are team players. We missed yall at the show, but dont worry, the dates are being set for next year as we speak. Lin

Here’s one I picked-up at the Arkansas Show and am VERY pleased with it.
Though at a glance it appears to be a simple little knife the more I inspect it the more impressed I become with its execution. The blade finish is perfection and IMO it’s just right in size and design for a fixed-blade carry. Extremely sharp and pointy, so have to handle with care.

Here are Don’s words on this handy little fixed EDC:
“Steel is 1086M from Howard Clark. The M is for modified, Vanadium added to 1086. It's a lot like W2 with just slightly less carbon. Very good blade steel. No profile grinding or grinding on the flats of the tang, more forged to shape than most and more difficult than one would think

Handle: premium Sambar Stag
Blade: forged full tapered tang of 1086M with active hamon.
OAL: 7 ¾”/ 197mm
BL: 4” / 102mm
Thickness: 3/16” @ spine
Sheath: leather and Sharkskin inlay sheath by Kenny Rowe.
