Art Knife Invitational '09 ~ images/impressions

Thank you, DAvid.
FYI, to all viewers: Phil asks us all take to a bunch of catalogues home with us and suggests that we get them, "Out there," so that others might enjoy the photos and learn about the show. He WANTS people to know about the show and see the knives, as do the makers.

This was my first time at the AKI, so I didn't think I ought to chime in on this particular aspect. But when I was leaving out the door of the AKI, I asked if I could take an extra catalog. Whoever was there told me sure, no problem, take as many as you want.

Again, I wasn't sure this was appropriate, but it's now apparent, with the above, that the intent has only been to encourage their distribution, not control it.

EDIT: Only kept one for myself - the rest went to knife enthusiasts.

Thank you, Mr. Betzner, I appreciate your additional information. Coincidentally, I just this minute (just opened it) received 30 more catalogues from Phil, who saw this thread and wanted me to have more, just in case! Thanks, Phil!

Anyone who wants one, just send me postage in the amt. of $5 for US, $12 for Canada and $14 for Europe, I'd guess Japan and So. America would be about the same.

I'm trying to get to Milan next week, so it will take a week or so to get back and ship them. I'll handle any orders ASAP, after we return.

I would love to have one, do you accept PayPal?

I have to thank C. Gray and Evelyn Taylor for supplying me with a catalog. I received it yesterday, and went through it this morning.

The layout and print quality is superb! Phil, you found a great layout artist and publishing company to do this.

The cover is a black matte backdrop with a glossy color single image of Gray's multiblade. Suitable for framing.

A brief synopsis of the rules and procedures opens the book with a facing tribute to the 'Buster Award': A peoples choice award voted on by the attendees for the maker with the best body of work. (Refresh my memory: Who won 2009?)

Then a simple two-page facing-page spread for each of the 25 artists/makers. In this spread is a hand drawn likeness of the maker (nicely flattering), and a short description of the knives the maker will be displaying along with their prices. One large photograph of one of these exhibition knives.

Current makers and their induction year preface the content, and past makers close the catalog.

It's a testament to the calibre of the Show and of Phil's work. I know he is proud.

I am going to risk and go out on a limb now....

I have to say, and I am particularly keen on this, that there was about 4-6 knife images which were NOT taken by a professional knife photographer and they did no favors to Phil and his good work. If you are elected to be a part of this show, I can't believe one would submit a lesser quality image to be alongside other obviously well-displayed pieces.

There are two(?) images which were rotated upside down from the original shot and the perspective shows this. This is a really basic error and should never have passed. Others are too dark, Some have spotty lighting, and a one is simply blurry.

Sorry, in the interest of maintaining the highest of standards for Phil, I hope others will see this distinction and do the right thing for upcoming years.

Hat's off to those who had Eric E. shoot their knives previously. They all look amazing.

Hopefully, few other viewers noticed none of what I see in my critique.....

All-in-all the book is a solid keepsake, and is a benchmark for this type of show and for the present state of Art Knives.

Thank you Gray (and Steve) and a big hurrah to Phil Lobred.

With a promise that they would be returned as mint as they are now, I will loan my programs from the '03 and '05 AKI shows to fellow forum members who have an interest... Best, Rich

Missed you at the show, Rich!

Great, catalogs are available, but there are a lot more interested people than printed catalogs. This is the 21st century, since the catalogs are not being sold, does the the earlier threat of lawsuit still hold true:

Coop this technique is reffered to as "Selective UV" printing
and can be done on the matte lamination only...

I too really enjoyed the catalogue which is a great example
of how to produce such a booklet for an international world-class event....

All the best,

phil, if you ever read this thread remember one thing;

your show is the greatest in the world and please do not let any of this influence you to change a thing about it.
