Art Knife Invitational '09 ~ images/impressions

Hi Mr. Johnson, I sent you an email:)

Thank you kindly, Steve:)

You are more than welcome, Lorien.

Oops, I have two more, just uncovered them, if anyone else wants one. Sorry, I'm not trying to play games here, my desk is just a "bit" messy.
NOW I HAVE ONE MORE.

Hi Keith, It really was an excellent show in every respect.
here is a shot of one of the SR Johnson knives:

An absolutely incredible dagger highlighting the talents of both artists/craftsmen.

Fittings are hot blued steel with 24K gold inlay and French Gray engraving. The handle is premium Blade Jade. This dagger is 14" OAL with a 9" BL.

It's great seeing these other beautiful pieces from the AKI!

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that IMHO the 'best' piece in the show (no official awards at this show) was by Dwight Towell. I'll check my catalog and provide more details in hopes that a picture of it will surface.

Are the catalogs available for purchase from the publisher? If not, I feel that is a great disservice to the collecting community.

No, and tough crap.....I might be able to get you one, though.;)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Kohai why do you take everything said about this show so personal?

Because the show organizer is a very good friend of mine....there are an awful lot of details involved in putting on any show, and the illusion of "entitlement" that the interweb promotes has always pissed me off.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

"the illusion of "entitlement" that the interweb promotes has always pissed me off" and the attendees of the AKI are truly the entitled of the world of custom knives. The pinacle we all strive for...perhaps some day when I'm an adult, I too can go to the AKI. Ahh to dream...but the catalog is restricted, thus I am not "entitled" to even dream.

It is quite possible that your behavior here results in your lack of "entitlement" to dream.

I am a nobody when it comes to custom knives, except for my involvement in this forum and my promotion of the makers I work with.

The offer for a free catalog was put out there, and I took advantage of that opportunity to get one for myself. I wasn't entitled to it, nor do I feel entitled, I just asked nice.

I think Steven makes a good point.

Perhaps
I will probably never attend this show, but I was offered a catalog by Mr. Loerchner (Thanks Wolfgang:)) without asking. I just got it the other day and it is beautiful!
On one hand it would be nice to see more of these cream of the crop knives, but I think the intention of the show organizers, and artists is to promote knives as truly fine art, and to build a base of customers and connoisseurs that can help expand the target audience for these works of art. To achieve these goals the show may have to remain exclusive, but that is the decision of the makers and organizers.
As a fan of knives I appreciate what the organizers and makers are trying to do with this show, and although not everyone will love the way the show is run it does appear that the show helps “push the envelope” of what is considered an art knife.
Just my two cents

I've often said among my circle of friends: 'entitlement' is the ugliest word in the English language. Here it is again, just in mention, stirring up the pot. Yuck.

STeven, thanks for the call and the offer of finding me a catalog. Fortunately C. Gray Taylor read my disappointment on missing the opportunity for one, and offered me a spare a day earlier.
