Thanks Page, of course, mine is a loose adaptation, but still
has the flavour ;)
my thumb rests confortably along the contour along the spine
you can get a good solid grip on this little feller, overall is about 6" long

edited to add, it's the kinda knife maybe a pirate would carry....arrrhhh

Here are two of the three I'm playing with, fresh out of the last tempering cycle.
They're from a little (4 1/2 x 1 1/8) piece of 3/16 A2 that was laying around on my bench.

The third is actually being forged and needs a bit more hammer abuse.

Wonder how many will actually be finished in time?

spent the morning working on mine... and then i ran out of propane... and the only local place that will fill my tank for me is closed on sunday *sigh*

Dan, those are mighty pointy! I like em' :)

I stripped off the old wrap and put a new one on, that other one
I had used TOO thick of epoxy, just didn't look right, the new one
is much nicer! :) well at least I think so...;)

You guys are such overachievers!

The re-wrap really looks great, Gary!

Dan, what are those going to be handled in? Love the styles of both of them.

Thanks Matt, don't forget to post yours up, since we won't be able to see it this year :(

The little one is going to get some unstabilized Chechen burl because I happen to have
a slice laying around that is too small for anything else. I'll probably keep it as a shop
knife for cutting tang holes in spacer material.

The large one is going to be done in Yokote Kogatana style in part of the piece of
stabilized spalted maple burl I won in Burl Source's first contest. If I can pull this
off... The Japanese basically means a wood handle and matching wood sheath,
both simply oval shaped, maybe with rounded ends. I kind of wanted to use
the claro walnut from the same contest but if I get this done in time for Ashokan
I certainly won't have time to finish the natural walnut.

Both are clearly much better wood than required for simple utility knives, but I'm
having fun :)

Gary, Don't hold your breath to see Matts kiridashi...........he isn't making one!
Thats the real reason he is not going to Ashokan this year!!!
.....anyway, thats what I heard from Spangles.;)
Mace

I think the real reason he's not going is that I actually AM going for once... and he knows my camera will catch him and spike mangler at their mischief, so I scared him off.

*watches as Matt runs into the woods with Mace's anvil again, and snaps a few more pictures*

Well, mine's probably going to be about the size of one of yours Paul, if i can get even that much steel from this smelt. (see my bloom kicking my ass thread) I was hoping to make something special for my first ashokan visit... but i think i bit off more than i can chew with the results from that smelt... it wasn't enough material =(

Those are pretty sweet looking Paul !

My kiridashi makes Paul's look big !

Well, it sucks, but it's all the steel i had after getting as far as i could consolidating this bloom from a smelt. It's real poor steel too with some voids and whatnot =( Well, 40$ in propane, 80$ in charcoal and 30$ in iron ore later... I've got a kiridashi. If this was damascus i'd have scraped it long ago and started over, but it's my first home made steel, from ground up hematite powder (pottery glaze) so i stuck with it untill I got SOMETHING to show for it besides a pile of scale and slag under my screw press.

These were taken before i polished it, the pics after polishing it don't want to come out right because of light reflections.

Stats :
Home made steel
Overall length : 4cm (1.5 inches)
width : 1.75 cm

Hand sanded to 1500 grit and then polished

well practice makes perfect justin.. It's a cool looking kiri even with the voids and whatnot.
Paul

Dandy Justin, I was fooled for a second with that measuring device
thought it was reading 4" and then I saw the scale above it ;)
so it's a wicked looking little slicer!
G2

Matt should have his about done and Dan, did you get any of those two handled yet?
11 days to go, it's getting cool up here already!
Just back from Clearwater FL and it was hot and muggy there, ugh!
G2

Man, that means I only have 5 more days to finish all my projects up! I leave Sunday for Boston then onto Ashokan on the 18th...sword is on it's last little leg, two sheaths in progress and one other sheath not started...this week is gonna fly!
