Atlanta Virtual Down this morning?

Apparently some one has paid the ransom as both my sites and email is back up. I had 125+ emails slam into me which will take some time to sort through. I will forward all of penis enlargement spam messages to Fitzo. (Not that I heard anything.)

In celebration and as an apology starting tomorrow I will have a 10% off everything sale for one week at my supplier web site. I don't make any money at 10% off but I sure wasn't making any when the damn thing was down either! Give me a day or so and I'll turn on the 10% off at www.midwestknifemakers.com Dad always told me to turn lemons to lemonade..

Alex has stepped up and made an effort to amend a situation that wasn't necessarily his fault. I respect that and I respect Alex for his work ethic and his integrity. I can list off several things that could have been handled better at every level - including mine -but why?
I do hate the bastards at NaviSite and when the inevitable class action lawsuit notice comes in the mail on this one - as seems to come once a month anymore - I'll sign up for it instead of my typical practice of throwing them away.

I learned a few things.
I need daily backups that can be accessed either locally or via totally different feed into the net.
I need a website I can move with a phone call.
I need to know how far downstream I am from the backbone.
I don't have a clue how to do any that stuff but I'm going to hire some one that does. I won't get caught with my pants down again.

If anyone is or knows of a pro that is experienced in web management, shopping carts (specifically OScommerce and Zencart) and PHP programming and will work with a knot head like me, please send me an email to tracy@usakms.com < this email works! hah!

I learned I need multiple email feeds. I can't believe how crippled I was with out email. Now I do have AOL and two different free accounts like yahoo and gmail but if no one knows your alternate address what's the use? I will figure out a way to have multiple feed emails out there published so if one goes down, people will know to use the next one.

There's more but it will take awhile to sort it all out. Next week I'm going to start a thread on web site management so those of us that got our asses kicked this week can learn something from those that know.

Have a good one fellas...

My website is back in operation too!!:):):):):)

I checked my webmail and had about a dozen less than friendly emails because I had not responded to their requests.....hopefully they will understand.

Tracy, your thinking the same things that I am. If I come up with sources on those issues I'll make sure to pass the information along to you. Please let me know if you find anything too!

I just sent an email to the guy that runs my host asking if he wants the referral, when I hear back I will let you know.He hosts on his own server in a little town in Colorado, I have had my sites there for ten years without more than 2 hours downtime

man, I need to order parts for my grinder soooooon. :)

Okay, as far as a website- yours is complicated and needs to have a backup plan
where you just switch the dns and turn on the backup site- I'd talk to alex about that, honestly, see if he's got someone else in the business who'd be willing to do that.

mail feeds are pretty easy- web stuff is a bit more complicated-

with a properly configured mailserver (not really that hard)- you can have a lower priority MX (mail) record in your dns zone file, so if your primary email isn't working, mail automagically gets sent to a lower priority (backup) server.

HOW you do that is variable. This is one of the things that I think should have gone into planning. But I'm second guessing. It might be worthwhile to have one 'live' at all times.

you CAN do that for yourself if you have a static IP and a *nix machine- it's not hard, but it's also very detail oriented. I can set up a backup mailserver for adomain in 10 minutes at home, but then I have to make sure the machine is always on and so forth. Management costs. (and you have to cinvince whoever runs the primary mailserver machine to have it poll the backup for queued traffic)

I'd ask alex about both- an backup mailserver in a separate colo with a different top level provider that can spool mail and that you can log into if an outage is of extended duration.

And about website backup plans. That's going to be more expensive, though.

None of this would be easy to set up at the last moment, or during an outage- I'm not making this sound like something Alex failed to do during the past week. It's just some stuff to think about later.

Looks like DNS is down for Alabanza/NaviSite, can't do a lookup on any AV sites that I know of as of 7:45AM EST

The comedy of errors continues. Both sites are now back down after coming up at noon yesterday. Atlanta Virtual is also now down.

Well, tried to get on Tracy's site with no luck.

This is not good folks! Alabanza/NaviSite have screwed the pooch.

Tracy, I will get an order in first of next week.

Tracy, I just went to your site and got on with no problem. What are all the babes doing with the donkey? :D Knife Network is also up. Everything looks fine to me.

hahah That cracked me up. Alex is up early as i've already nagged at him once today. He must have mashed the right button. My supply site is up, maybe the knife site will be shortly.

Tracy is up and now I'm down. It's Saturday 1:00 pm and I've been down all morning.

I was up about noon yesterday, until about noon today..... I just tried to get to my site and its down again. Just when you think the sun is shining......here comes another storm!

odd. the errors before were "too long to respond", this time I can't do a successful nslookup.

You guys got too happy yesterday and jinxed it! :p :p

I was up for almost 3 days.... out again...
less time taking orders, more time to grind, but...

A thought for those that are thinking of switching from AV to something else; find out who hold the physical server where you switch to.... might be the same a-holes(not AV) that messed this up. ;)

Ya got a point there son. I was up and running for two days, then "zilch". I'm back down now, but I am gonna stick with Alex for the long haul.

That is OK though, because when I do come back up, I'll have a couple of extra pieces up for sale.

my supplier site is up as Alex had a personal look at it and did some voodoo. my knife site is down and so it goes...

this is turing into a blog of sorts...my knife site is back up...

but hey, I saved a ton of money by switching my car insurance to Geico...

I am finally back up, I can't go through that again. I did not find this thread till now wish I would have found it sooner.
